1 EXPERIMENT #1 CREATE SNAKE BUBBLES! 1 plastic bottle (water, sports drink, or other) 1 rubber band 1 old sock or old wash cloth Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle. Trace the bottom on the cloth or sock and cut an inch wider around the traced circle. Use a rubber band to attach the cloth to the bottle. Now dip the cloth into bubble mixture and blow through the top of the bottle! From: acoupleofcraftaddicts.blogspot.com What kind of bubbles did you make? Try making your own bubble mixture with dish soap and water. What happens when you add corn syrup? What does a polymer have to do with bubbles? Why are bubble round? Add food coloring to your bubble mixture and see if you can blow a rainbow!

2 EXPERIMENT #2 PINE CONE MAGIC! 1 Dry pine cone 1 Dish with water enough to cover the pine cone Make a guess about what will happen when a pine cone gets wet. Examine the pine cone and see what it looks like Put the pine cone in water Wait for about an hour Look at the pine cone and notice the difference! Put the pine cone in the sun and let it dry. What part of a tree is a pine cone? Why did it change the way it did when it got wet? How would it get wet outside? Draw and label a picture of the parts of a pine tree, including roots! (Hint: It s leaves are very skinny)

3 EXPERIMENT #3 COLD SCIENCE! Water A cup or ice cube tray Straws Paper Container with water to float your boat! Fill the container (a cup or ice cube tray) with water. Punch a hole in a piece of paper or cardboard and put it over the top of the container. Put a straw through the hole so it sits in the water (this will be your mast!) and put it all in the freezer! When it s frozen take it out and make a sail with a piece of paper and float it in a container of water! Why does the ice boat float on water (ice is, after all, water itself!)? Can you move the boat with air? What happens to the water level in the container of water as your boat melts? BONUS ACTIVITY! Create a large block of ice by freezing water in the plastic bowl. Take it out of the bowl and sprinkle salt on (you can put food coloring in the salt!) What happens to the ice? Why does it happen? Do we put salt on anything in the winter time?

4 EXPERIMENT #4 All Ears! Your ears! Record the weather conditions (it can change what you hear!) Listen for 5 to 10 minutes outside or at an open window in the morning and write down the sounds you hear. Listen for 5 to 10 minutes outside or at an open window in the evening (dusk or after dark) and write down what you hear. Compare what you hear. Did you hear different things? Did you hear some of the same things? Can you recognize any of the sounds? Why do you think you hear different things in the morning and the night? Try listening in the middle of the day. Do you hear more or less animal noises? Why do you think that happens? Bonus! Draw a picture of one of the animals or thing that you hear!

5 EXPERIMENT #5 All SYSTEMS GO! Paper Markers or crayons or colored pencils A picture of the human body systems (you can get this online or at the library) Pick a system of the body...digestive, nervous, muscular, or any other! Find a picture of it (or try to draw it from memory!) Draw the outline of a person and draw in the body system. If you have colors, color in the different parts and label them! What does your body system do? What would happen if that system stopped working in your body? Do other animals have the same system? Does it work in the same way? BONUS ACTIVITY! Can you name 7 systems of the body?

6 EXPERIMENT #6 BUILDING BRIDGES Two attached giraffe (you ll need glue and scissors to put them together!) Any supplies you would like for a bridge The giraffes need to get across a busy street in their savannah habitat. You need to build them a bridge! Use any supplies around the house and build any kind of bridge you d like! Challenge: Your giraffes have to fit under your bridge as well! How easy was it to build a bridge? Was it strong enough to take more weight than the paper giraffes? What type of bridge did you build? (see right for types) BONUS! Can you make it a draw bridge?

7 EXPERIMENT #7 DIVING IN A BOTTLE Large plastic bottle (about 2L) with lid (filled with water right to the top) Glass filled with water (for testing the diver ) Plastic straw with a bend BluTack or playdough or clay Scissors 1) Cut straw about 1.5 inches on either side of the bend (they should be even). Add a glob of clay to ends of straw. Make sure the holes of the straw are sealed. 2) Check that the sealed straw just floats in the glass of water. It should slowly rise to the top of the water after you drop it in. If it sinks, remove some of the clay. If it floats too easily add some more clay.. 3) Drop the straw 'diver' into the bottle. (Add water if you need more to get it to the top) 4) Screw the cap on the bottle. Squeeze the sides of the bottle (fairly firmly). The straw diver will sink through the water. Let go of the bottle and the diver will float back up to the top. Why does this work? (Hint: it has to do with air pressure) What is buoyancy? What does this science experiment have to do with fish?
