2 1 Connect Make Learning Meaningful 5 10 Min. Make Connections Listed below are some basic principles of geography for children. As you proceed with this unit, direct most of your discussion toward the development of these concepts. kinds of weather kinds of landforms kinds of bodies of water kinds of natural resources use of natural resources To begin to consider the Essential Question, have children turn to pages in their text. Tell children that they will be singing a song about caring for our Earth. Point out that the song tells ways for people to show they care in their daily lives. Show You Care by Julio Ortega (sung to the tune of I m a Little Teapot ) Save a lake or forest. Show you care. Recycle paper. Be aware. You can reuse boxes. I ll show how. Turn off water. Reduce now! Have children sing the song Show You Care. Have them also use movement to describe the ways to care. Reading Support Life in the Forest, Reading Street: Grade 1, Unit 2, Week 5 Activate Prior Knowledge To activate prior knowledge, discuss with children ways to care for our Earth. Ask: How can we care for our Earth when we are at home? At school? At a park or a beach? As children respond, have them demonstrate the ways they could care for Earth. Our Earth, Our Resources 27

3 2 Experience Teach Knowledge and Skills Min. Different Kinds of Weather Write the word weather on the board. Say the word aloud and have children repeat after you. Tell children that weather can be described using words such as wet or dry, hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy. Have children look at the pictures on pages of their text and describe the weather. Create a simple T-chart on the board with the headings Weather and Activities. Then have children describe the weather outside and record their responses in the chart. Have children identify activities they could do outside in this weather and record their responses on the chart. Weather sunny, warm Activity swimming, soccer Then have students think about other things they would like to learn about their environment. Looking at Our Land and Water Have children preview the illustrations on pages Then write the words mountain, plain, lake, and river on the board. Say the words aloud and have children repeat after you. Ask children to tell what each word means. Then guide children in drawing different landforms and bodies of water. 4 15 30 Min. Our Earth s Resources Write the phrase natural resource on the board. Say the phrase aloud and have children repeat after you. Explain that a natural resource comes from nature. It is something we can use. For example, we use wood from trees for furniture and fires. We use water to drink and clean ourselves. Point out that many other things we need come from nature or are made from things in nature. Then guide children in brainstorming examples of natural resources and ways people use them. Refer children to the web on page 157 to help get them started. Ask: Why should natural resources be protected? Content Support Leveled Reader Natural Resources Interview About Farm History Discuss the lesson title with children and then write the word history on the board. Say the word aloud and have children repeat after you. Explain that history is telling the story of people and places from the past. In order to help children understand the concept of different times in history, explain that the time when their grandparents were children is farther in the past than the time when their parents were children. Explain that the present is now, when they themselves are children. Then explain that in the future they will be grown-ups. Have children turn to page 166. Work together to write a sentence describing each picture in the timeline on the board. Farm History 1700 Long ago, people used to farm by hand Later, people used animals to help them farm. 5 10 15 Min. Caring for Our Resources Write the words reduce, reuse, and recycle on the board. Say each word aloud and have children repeat after you. Explain how each word helps us to conserve the Earth s natural resources for use in the present and in the future: use less, use items again, and collect used materials to be made into new items. Have children glance at the lesson pages. Explain that the words in the speech bubbles are the advice that Debby and her classmates give others about reducing, reusing, and recycling natural resources. Then explain that the words in the boxed text are helpful hints about ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Guide children in brainstorming materials that can be conserved through reducing, reusing, and recycling. Collect responses in a three-column chart on the board. Use the pictures and boxed text on pages to prompt their thinking. Assess Understanding: Connect to the Essential Question Questions and Scenarios Have children use one or more of the questions and scenarios below to relate the unit content to the Essential Question: How can we take the best care of our Earth? Tell children that they are mapmakers. Have them create a map of an imaginary place that included names and labels for landforms and bodies of water. Ask children to identify areas where people might live, work, and play. Have children examine the use of resources in the past, present, and future. Explain that people need fuel to stay warm and cook food. Discuss the methods used for heating used in the past (grass, wood), present (oil, natural gas, coal, the sun), and future (examples could be real or fanciful). Then have children draw pictures showing how people produced heat for cooking in the past, what we use today, and what they think people might use in the future. Ask children to evaluate which heating methods are best for our Earth. EQ Activity Have children help develop a recycling plan for the classroom. Help children create a list of things that you use in the classroom. Then have them suggest ways that they can recycle or reuse those items, for example, using both sides of paper, using less electricity, and reusing jugs and bottles.
