2 Welcome to this three day international course which has been designed to give an intensive and expert introduction to the opportunities and challenges found in the polar regions. It has been developed by the University of Cambridge s Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) and Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), in association with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The polar regions are experiencing rapid transformation as a result of climate change and human development. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted that the main environmental effects of climate change in the polar regions will be reductions in thickness and extent of glaciers and ice sheets, and major changes in natural ecosystems with negative effects on many organisms, including birds and mammals. In the Arctic, additional impacts include significant reductions in the extent and thickness of sea ice and permafrost, and increased coastal erosion. As the Arctic warms, melting sea ice will allow greater access to the region with the potential for increased maritime transport, greater exploitation of natural resources such as oil and gas, minerals, fisheries, and increased tourism. In the Antarctic, the exploitation of mineral resources is banned by the Antarctic Treaty, but improvements in marine harvesting technology and over exploitation of fish stocks elsewhere in the world has led to an increase in fishing for squid and krill and concern about the resulting impact of the Southern Ocean ecosystem. While shipping, tourism and natural resource exploitation provide new economic opportunities in the polar regions, they also present significant challenges to areas that were once remote and isolated. Aims To learn about the polar regions, and the opportunities and challenges of these environments To think through and develop new approaches and responses to living and operating in the rapidly changing Arctic and Antarctic To meet, discuss and network with leading polar experts from around the world Outcomes As a result of their participation in the course, within the time constraints available, participants will: Gain a broad overview of the environmental, social and political challenges facing the polar regions Be equipped with the knowledge and skills to enhance business planning and operational policy decisions associated with your professional involvement in the polar regions Be able to work with your organisation to identify strategic opportunities and challenges in the polar regions Be able to join an international network of polar professionals Content The course is divided into five modules: Introduction to the polar regions Governance of the polar regions Antarctic science and climate change Indigenous peoples of the Arctic and social change Natural resource use and sustainable development in the polar regions 2

3 Presentation of the course Teaching will comprise keynote lectures by world experts from SPRI and BAS, guest tutorials, discussion sessions, workshops and practical team exercises. Delegates will be able to participate in a day visit to both BAS and SPRI and tour their specialized research facilities. There will also be an opportunity to see the world renowned Polar Museum at SPRI and see its unique collections from Scott and Shackleton s historic Antarctic expeditions. Lectures, visits, and group exercises will take place at Madingley Hall, SPRI and BAS and must be attended by all delegates. Travelling to Madingley Hall Madingley Hall is situated in the village of Madingley, 3 miles west of Cambridge. Madingley is easily accessible from the M11, A14 and A428, and London airports. 5

When using one of these devices please ensure your final destination is Madingley. For instructions on how to find us, please see our website. Parking at Madingley Hall Cars may be left in front of the main Hall while you register but should then be taken to the rear car park. Please do not park in the cobbled courtyard except to unload luggage. There is ample car parking in the car park reached via the roadway branching to the left at the top of the drive. Parking for visitors with reduced mobility Delegates with reduced mobility are advised to park on the front gravel forecourt as near as possible to the main entrance to the Hall where the reception office is located. There are two small steps leading to the reception area. Wheelchair users are advised to take their vehicle through the car park and into the cobbled courtyard. The paved area is ramped to the rear door to the Hall (the large oak door) which leads via the corridor to the reception area. Vehicles can be left in the courtyard for the duration of the course and advice on parking position will be given on arrival.
