1 UNESCO UNITWIN Network on Underwater Archaeology Workshop on Underwater Archaeology for the African Countries (13-23 May 2015 Kemer / Antalya Turkey) INTRODUCTION Training Ship "Selçuk 1" from Selçuk University and the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology UNITWIN Network The UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001) ensures the comprehensive protection of underwater cultural heritage through clear legal and operational rules, in addition to setting a scientific work methodology in its Annex. In the course of the First UNESCO Africa Regional Meeting, which took place in Yenagoa (Nigeria) in November 2013, the different countries representatives acknowledged the need for reinforcement of capacities throughout the region in order to adequately protect their archaeological sites found, totally or partially, under water. Capacity building is, therefore, required - together with the implementation of an appropriate legal framework- with regards to exploration, excavation, conservation and restoration of underwater cultural heritage. 1

2 One of the main aims of the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology 1 is to organize regional and international capacity-building programmes, scientific conferences and seminars to advance in the field of underwater archaeology as well as to promote its development among Member States without the necessary curricula. Selçuk University (Turkey), coordinator of the Network, thus organizes an introductory training course addressed to the African region focused on the basics principles and techniques to understand, study, record and manage the underwater cultural heritage. OBJECTIVES The UNESCO UNITWIN Workshop on Underwater Archaeology for the African Countries will aim at establishing an understanding of underwater cultural heritage among government heritage officials and archaeologists of the invited African countries. It will also promote the use of the scientific standards settled by the international community in the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. It shall moreover provide the basis for effective collaboration and co-operation among the African region and beyond. Upon completion of the different parts of the course, the participants will receive a certification. DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE The course will run for a period of 12 days combining theoretical classes with practical sessions following the training schemes and standards collected in the UNESCO Foundation Course Manual on the Protection and Management of the Underwater Cultural Heritage 2 and the UNESCO Manual on Activities directed to the Underwater Cultural Heritage 3. The theoretical classes will take place in the UNITWIN Training Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Kemer (Turkey) as well as in the training vessel of the Network, where most of the practical part of the course will be carried out. The language of the training course will be English. Accommodation will be provided in the dormitory of the Training Center. 1 UNESCO Network of Universities and Institutions dedicated to the research and education in underwater archaeology and related disciplines (established in September 2012). 2 The UNESCO Foundation Course Manual on the Protection and Management of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was developed out of the UNESCO Training Course for the Asian Pacific Region in 2011 and it has been already used in several UNESCO training programmes in the Latin American and Caribbean region in 2012 and The UNESCO Manual for activities directed to the Underwater Cultural Heritage was published in 2012 and explain the Rules of the Annex of the 2001 Convention. 2
