1 NAMASTE CHILDREN NEPAL Project CRYSTAL CHILDREN HOME Ramkot, Kathmandu Project Report 2013 The Crystal Children Home which is a safe home for parentless and homeless children in Nepal succeeds to develop its infrastructure in this summer with the help of volunteers from Belgium organized by Bouworde Vlaanderen VZW in the co-ordination of Crystal Children Home, Belgium. Thanks to all associated volunteers, organizations, donors and supporters who did great contribution. The contribution allocated in 3 sectors: 1. Financial 2. Physical 3. Social

2 Physical contribution: Those volunteers (15 young and energetic people) did various physical works at home for 2 weeks, each person helped to maintain and develop the home premises and to develop infrastructure of the home. Some major works are as below: A. Cleaning the construction sites: The major construction site where the water basin is located in the top of the ground in our sloppy land was covered by the bush. 1 st group cleaned the entire bush and made the place easier to work. Also they built steps to walk and carry the goods. B. Carrying up the construction materials: As our land is terraced, the road ends in the bottom and the construction site lies in the top of the land. All the materials such as sand/ stones/ chips/ iron/ cement/ frames are needed to carry up about 60 meter with various steps. Volunteers carry up all the materials to the construction sites. It was the most hard and challenging job for them because such type of work was hardly done by them. We are very thankful for them as they did a very complicated task they d ever done in their life.

3 C. Rain water drain built above outside toilet: The ground just above the toilet was the main source to pass the rain water towards the wall of home and toilet which created the moister inside. It was necessary to clean that part and make water proof drain for rain water. Volunteer cleaned and paved the stones on it.

4 D. Painting home: The most important and good job they did is painting the home. They painted the walls, windows, doors and the big Iron Gate. More than 7000 square feet of interior wall paint, 12 doors, 12 windows and a big Iron Gate painting was big and beautiful work of volunteers. (Note: About 20kgs paint was used more than estimated as they used much thicker paint). E. Entrance path maintained: The entry path was covered by grass and was slippery. This part was cleaned by the volunteers. Also, they paved the small stones to keep it dry and safe to walk or drive.

5 F. Play ground maintained: The play ground was slopped south and was not plain to let the children play. Rain water used to drain towards the fence, so it was necessary to divert its draining towards the gate. Volunteers worked to make it in good level and control the drain towards correct direction. G. Other work during this period: Wall of the play ground was destroyed, we success to re-construct and plaster on it. Dry stone wall of the play ground was in risk and any time stone can fall down and children may injured or may be dangerous for life too, we did maintain with cement and now it is safe and protected. The gate was not in proper place and destroyed, we breakdown and re-construct again.

6 Social and emotional contribution: Besides above mentioned physical works, volunteers organized extra activities, games, tours and tuition classes, they provided mental and emotional support and participation in school classes. These were the social contribution to the children and organization. Feed backs to organization: Kathmandu valley has less supply of water because of over population, so we don t have enough water supply. There is no proper management and supply of drinking water by the government. We also faced scarcity of water for cleaning and drinking purposes. The most important property for the Children Home is the water storage tank. The old tank was frequently leaking the water, it was unhealthy and unsafe. Now we have about litre safe and clean water storage Capacity. Thanks to the; Bouworde Vlaanderen which organizes volunteer group to Nepal. Crystal Children Home, which co-ordinates for this mission. Volunteers who actively participate financially, physically and mentally. Individuals and organizations who support financially to the volunteers for fund raising. This property will be lifelong usable for our children, we are always thankful for that. Feedback to volunteers: Volunteers also learnt about Nepal s geographical location, nature, cultural value and aspects, economical and political situation. They also enjoyed their short holiday trip. This trip was also fruitful to the volunteers themselves. It is important for the young generations of Belgium to learn many things from economically poor and developing country like Nepal.
