3 Foreword Following the tradition of previous events, the 5th anniversary workshop on Challenges in Collaborative Engineering (CCE 07) in April 2007 was dedicated to industrial practices and new technologies for collaborative engineering. The research field Collaborative Engineering aims at providing concepts, technologies and solutions for supporting work in dispersed engineering teams. The increased industrial demand for this innovative approach is based on the fact that networked organization structures are common practice in numerous industry sectors, like automobile, aerospace, electronics or construction. Collaboration has become a key issue for agile and flexible engineering processes. The theme of the event coordination of work in dispersed groups refers to one of the essential aspects of collaboration. An understanding of the coordination demand from different engineering domains is crucial for providing adequate organizational and technical support. This is reflected in the main aspects covered by CCE 07: socio-technical aspects: understanding user demand and best practices of coordination in engineering teams; coordination and collaborative learning; handling multi-cultural issuesin coordination technical aspects: designing and creating coordination tools and services; awareness support and coordination; coordination mechanisms for specific domains and application fields; integration of coordination mechanisms in existing engineering environments organizational and economic aspects: measuring benefits of collaboration; organizational aspects and guidelines for coordination; intellectual property sharing and protection CCE 07 was co-organized by the special interest group CSCW of Gesellschaft für Informatik e.v. (Germany), Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Jönköping University (Sweden), and the EU project MAPPER. As during previous years, the 2007 edition of CCE accompanied the IEEE DDECS workshop. Both workshops took place in Cracow, the former capital of Poland and the burial place of Polish kings. CCE 07 participants met in the oldest part of the Jagiellonian University, namely in the historic building of Collegium Maius.

4 CCE 07 received 26 submissions; 13 papers were accepted by the Programme Committee. After the workshop, the accepted papers were revised by the authors based on the programme committee s comments and entered into a second review cycle. These workshop proceedings assemble the final paper versions and an invited contribution by Jerzy Pokojski on personal knowledge management in engineering design.
