The program may also attract experienced individuals including IS professionals seeking to upgrade skills and to understand management issues, people seeking career changes, graduates in a variety of fields such as business etc. Those students may join the program by accepting a number of requirements of the BIST program limited by 30 credit points. Carrier paths: The BIST program is designed to support traditional and emerging opportunities. Rather than being concentrated almost exclusively in large information systems groups in major and midsized corporations, job opportunities also exist in virtually all organizations. 2 2 To exploit these expanding opportunities, students must know not only technology but also the business and environment in which they will work. Typical job objectives are: advancement in current job, business analyst, CIO, consulting, electronic commerce specialist, e-government specialist, entrepreneur, first or middle IS management, integration designer, internal consultant, IT liaison, management consultant, manager of international projects, outsourcer/systems integrator, regional information officer (RIO), systems analyst/designer, and technical specialist. Description of the BIST program: The BIST progam consists of three tracks: IS core consisting of 15 units (45 ECTS points): The IS core block defines the minimal knowledge required of all BIST students. The core differentiates the BIST program from both computer science programs and IS concentration within the MBA programs. Integration consisting of 3 units (9 ECTS points): The integration block addresses the needs of international organizations, institutions and corporations to integrate disparate internal systems and to communicate with external and international parties. Career tracks consisting of 12 units (36 ECTS points): The careers track blocks consists of elective courses organized around careers such as electronic commerce, manager of international projects, or management consulting. Additionally, each student prepares a Master Thesis (30 ECTS points) Prerequisites of the program: The following blocks of courses are considered to be the kernel competencies required from students enrolling the BIST program: IS Foundations with courses in Fundamentals of Information Systems, Information Technology Hardware and Software, Programming, Data and Object Structures Foundations based on courses on Financial Accounting, Marketing, Organizational Behavior Students with inadequate backgrounds in these areas are required to take additional courses and will, therefore, require additional units to complete their degrees. Planned extension of the program to PhD program Career opportunities for the first round: Information Officer with enhanced skills in one of the two Management of IT Infrastructures and Technology Management International Knowledge Management and Transregional Project and IT Management 2 BIST Program 2.1 Integration of the Program into International Curricula The program is based on the IEEE curriculum for the Graduate Degree Programm in Information Systems (MSIS 2000). 2.2 Entry Conditions The student has a bachelor or equivalent degree within one of the following three programs: in (CC2004 curriculum of the ACM, AIS, and IEEE-CS) and Minor in or in Information Systems (IS2002 curriculum of the ACM, AIS, and AITP) or
3 in and Minor in (In this case the student must complete a number in courses which are in the Program for and are not yet completed within the profile. Furthermore, an entry examination is required before starting the program. Depending on the results of the entry examination the student is obliged to complete other requirements.) In all other cases the study program management committee is obliged to define requirements for the participation. Requirements are based on the kernel competencies in the areas of IS foundations and business foundations. Students may be requested to complete all courses within these kernel competencies within the first year of enrollment. Requirements are limited to 30 ECTS points Teaching Language All lectures will be given in English. 2.4 Course Schedule and Staffing The program is scheduled for 4 terms. 2.5 Curriculum Building Blocks Courses to be given within the program are grouped into the following four main parts: Information Systems Core The information systems core consists of five courses: Data management CAU, Klu, TUM Analysis, modeling, and design (Information Systems Engineering) CAU Data communications and networking TUM, Klu Project and change management Klu, Po IS policy and strategy Klu, Po This requirement normally consists of 45 ECTS points. Integration Core Systems integration and collaboration is a pervasive aspect of IS practice. Traditional programs neither included synthesis not integration in the curriculum. Integration can be viewed from four perspectives depending on the career track intended: Integrating the enterprise: This course is oriented toward what to build, not how to build it. It focusses on organizational and managerial issues at the level of the enterprise as a whole. Integrating international organizations, institutions, and corporations Integrating IS function: This course focuses on managing IS functions on a day-to-day basis. Its objectives are to design effective/efficient IS organizational processes, assess the impact of merging technologies, define human resource needs and management methods, IS governance alternatives, define the role of the CIO, and apply methods to measure and demonstrate the value of IS. Integrating IS technologies: This course is concerned with how to develop an integrated or collaborating IS enterprise or government architecture including evaluate and select from architectural and platform choices, priorities, and policies, assessment of the impact of emerging technologies, evaluate the role of standards, and evaluate effect of vendor strategies. This requirement normally consists of 9 ECTS points.

5 5 Career Opportunities Career opportunities for the first round: Information Officer with enhanced skills in one of the two Management of IT Infrastructures and Technology Management International Knowledge Management and Transregional Project and IT Management Master Thesis The students are obliged to prepare a master thesis within an international team forming virtual collaborations (based on existing infrastructure). The defense of master theses shall be held in a commonly organized summer school. 6 6 for those students who switch to the Master program Information Systems Engineering by becoming enrolled for two terms at the universities of collaborating partners and taking courses in two of the tracks and with the information systems core and the integration core. Enhancing the Master program Information Systems Engineering at Christian-Albrechts University Kiel. Students at CAU will enroll for two terms into courses at the partner universities in two of the tracks and with the information systems core.
