2 The Gain Line Ravi Deepres 12 September January 2016 The Gain Line, a new film by award-winning contemporary artist Ravi Deepres, promises to take audiences on a unique journey into the heart of the game. Commissioned by Rugby Art Gallery and Museum in partnership with Film and Video Umbrella, the film takes inspiration from the gain line, the hypothetical line on the rugby field which teams endeavour to cross to gain territory. The film explores the game s identity from its birth to the present day. Utilising new technology such as mini-cams, drones mapping player movement, and ground-breaking 3D laser scanning, taking the viewer into the mind-set of the player, both psychologically, physically and virtually. Further elements of history, identity, scientific research and contemporary issues around data analysis are integrated into the fabric of the work. The filming of specific sequences was made possible by working directly with Rugby School, Rugby Lions, Bath Rugby, World Rugby Museum and Rugby Football Union, Twickenham Stadium. After its premiere at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum on September 12 - just a week before England play the opening game of the Rugby World Cup it is being presented at our partner venues, ICIA, University of Bath and Phoenix, Leicester. Ravi Deepres, an artist, film-maker and photographer, has established an international reputation for his still and moving image work. He has exhibited across the UK and abroad, and his work has been commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Tokyo New National Theatre and the Paris Opera House. 3 Rugby Football Open 12 September January 2016 Rugby Art Gallery and Museum are celebrating the Rugby World Cup 2015 with an open exhibition themed around the sport of rugby football. Artists were invited to submit existing artworks that are about rugby football or create new works in response to the football theme. The theme was left very open to allow artists the freedom to interpret it for themselves. A selection panel had the tough job of selecting from the multitude of excellent applications we received. 19 artists were selected who have produced 21 works between them including 14 new art works created especially for the exhibition. The exhibition will include painting, drawing, film, textiles, ceramics and sculpture and will be shown alongside Ravi Deepres new film The Gain Line. Join us on Thursday 3 December, 5.30pm 8pm for a special celebration evening for the Rugby Football Open. There will be activities, refreshments and a chance to do some late night shopping in Rugby Visitor Centre to get ahead with the Christmas shopping! 4 Graham Ibbeson 12 September January 2016 Graham Ibbeson is a UK based sculptor with an international reputation for creating sensational bronze sculptures. In Rugby he is famous as the artist who created the respected and well photographed bronze of William Webb Ellis which sits outside of Rugby School. This display provides a unique opportunity to see Graham s original drawings, photographs and models for the sculpture. Join Graham Ibbeson on Saturday 3 October, 2pm, for an informal 40 minute talk about his work. To book a place please call Rugby Visitor Centre on or visitor.centre@rugby.gov.uk Schools Competition exhibition 12 September 31 October 2015 Rugby based school children aged 5-7 were challenged to create a new design for a rugby ball. The winner was awarded the unique opportunity to have their winning design printed onto a real ball courtesy of Gilberts. The design awarded first place, the designs of the 10 runners up and all the other entries will be on display in the art gallery. Rugby College exhibition 6 November January 2016 Rugby College students will be working to create new pieces responding to the exhibitions The Gain Line and Rugby Football Open. Students will receive a talk and tour of the exhibition and have a chance to study the exhibits. Art students will then be creating film responses to the exhibitions and fashion students will be creating textile responses. Their final pieces will be displayed at the art gallery. 5 Rugby Football in Rugby Borough 12 September January 2016 This exhibition will explore the history of Rugby Borough based rugby football clubs through objects donated to the display by each of the clubs. Featuring items such as club shirts, ties, photographs and trophies this is an unmissable chance to view historical items from all of the clubs in one place. Museum

6 Events At Rugby Art Gallery and Museum Dramatic Draw Thursday 1 October, 5.30pm 8pm Take part in our rugby themed Dramatic Draw session, using charcoal, pencils and other materials to draw clothed life models in rugby player poses, shirts and pitch back drop. Refreshments available to purchase. 4 per person, 18yrs +, please book in advance by calling Tackle the Big Draw! Saturday 10 October, 10.30am 3pm Join us for a range of dynamic drawing activities for all ages as part of the National Big Draw campaign. Take part in large scale drawings, animation, face painting, projections, decorating balls and drawing and meeting players. FREE admission, just drop in. Half Term activities October Join us at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum for a range of exciting rugby themed activities during half term. Look out for animation workshops, creating 3D rugby pitches and designing rugby shirts. 8 Rugby Art Gallery and Museum events at Rugby Village, Old Market Place, Rugby Part of the Enjoy Rugby Festival The Stories Behind the Goal Posts Tuesday 6 October, 7pm 9pm Join us for an evening of intriguing talks with artists showing new work in the Rugby Football Open at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum. Each artist will discuss the work they produced for the exhibition accompanied by an illustrated lecture, followed by the chance for the audience to ask questions. A unique opportunity to hear directly from the artists how rugby football has inspired them. Featuring artists Jane Ball, Adrian Baynes, Frank Cook and Deborah Dutton. Screening of The Gain Line and In-Conversation with Ravi Deepres Tuesday 20 October, 7pm 9.30pm Join us for a special screening of The Gain Line a new film by artist Ravi Deepres which explores the game of rugby from an historical, physiological, social and cultural perspective. Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and Rugby Art Gallery and Museum in partnership with Phoenix, Leicester and ICIA, University of Bath and supported by Arts Council England. The filming of specific sequences was made possible by working directly with Rugby School, Rugby Lions, Bath Rugby, World Rugby Museum and Rugby Football Union, Twickenham Stadium. The screening will be approx. 20 minutes followed by an In-Conversation with the artist Ravi Deepres and Steven Bode, Director of Film and Video Umbrella. Rugby s World Cup Experience Schools Programme Tuesday 15 September - Thursday 5 November Rugby Borough Council has developed an exciting schools programme to celebrate the heritage of the game to coincide with Rugby s World Cup celebrations school children will get active during tag rugby drills, learn about the heritage of the game and ball and make their own leatherette rugby ball. Please note this schools programme is now closed for booking. 9 Celebratory Public Art Rugby s Got Balls September October 2015 Various locations around Rugby Rugby s Got Balls is a community arts project that has been developed by Kookooshaboo arts collective, with support from Rugby Borough Council. The project will see 5 large rugby ball sculptures with colourful designs appear throughout the town in the lead up to the games, and will involve Rugby College art students, 2,000 school children and the local community. Designs will include thumb prints, a selection of children s drawings in response to what you like about Rugby, a community yarn bomb ball in Caldecott Park, as well as Kookooshaboo s artistic creation. These sculptures have been commissioned by Rugby Borough Council. Rugby Football themed Arts Grant projects A number of Arts Grant projects have been funded by Rugby Borough Council to celebrate the 2015 World Cup. These include Elizabeth Shepherd s See Rugby photography project, an applique wall hanging by the Rainbow Over Fifties Club and a sculpture made out of recycled materials by Works 4 Me. Wire Sculptures September October 2015 Various locations around Rugby Three wire sculptures have been designed and created by artists David Gosling and Tony Davies. The sculptures are figures that represent key moments in the game of rugby: The Kick, The Pass and The Tackle. These sculptures have been commissioned by Rugby Borough Council. Arts Development Arts Development is focused on creating opportunities for people to engage in art and culture. It supports artists and creative people within the borough of Rugby by working in partnership with Rugby Art Gallery and Museum to offer free advice, networking opportunities and training. Arts Development also encourages young people to engage in the arts, it develops new partnerships with the creative industries and provides access to local grants.
