Recovery of infrastructures Highways The Tohoku Expressway is a transport and commercial artery which connects Tohoku and Kanto regions Numerous factories are located along the route 347 km out of 675 km of the expressway was destroyed in the earthquake Traffic restriction was lifted on March 24, following the completion of emergency restoration measures Source: METI 2

Recovery of infrastructures Railways All Shinkansen lines are in operation Tohoku Shinkansen (Sendai- Ichinoseki) resumed operation from April 28 Source: METI 3

Recovery of infrastructures Sea ports Quays of all major ports in the quake-hit Pacific coast from Aomori to Ibaraki became usable by March 24 The ports damaged by the tsunami are gradually recovering function Source: METI 4

Recovery of infrastructures Airports All Japanese airports are now in operation Sendai s airport runway became usable from March 28 Sendai s airport March 13 April 13 Source: Kyodo News 5

Recovery of infrastructures Supply of electricity We are making the utmost efforts to match supply and demand during the peak-load summer on both the demand side (intensive energy saving) and supply side (capacity expansion of thermal plants) TEPCO forecasts a supply electricity capacity of 52,000 MW for this summer. It exerts utmost effort to further increase this capacity. Source: METI 6

Recovery of the industry Overview of the situation More than 60% of affected bases of respondents have already finished restoration Meanwhile, other production bases are on the way to resumption, and about less than 30% are expected to be restored by this summer Source: METI 7

Recovery of the industry The supply chain 80% of the processing industry and more than 60% of the materials industry have almost secured alternative suppliers of raw materials, components and parts Some companies are still seeking some specific raw materials, components and parts It is expected that most of damaged companies will resume and be able to maintain supply chains Source: METI 8

Recovery of the industry Effects on specific industries: (1) Steel Although Sumitomo Metal s Kashima plant has stopped production, other Japanese iron works can still produce plenty of crude steel Source: METI 9

Recovery of the industry Effects on specific industries: (2) Petrochemicals Mitsubishi Chemical s Kashima Plant, which has suffered some damage from the Great East Japan Quake, is responsible for about 10% of Japan s ethylene production Even if it cannot be repaired soon, Japan has many other complexes which can produce more than the necessary volume of petrochemicals Source: METI 10

Recovery of the industry Effects on specific Industries : (3) Auto / Electronics Industries Most of the motor production companies have restarted production, depending on the supply level of core parts and materials Damaged raw materials and product parts factories in the field of electronics industries are being brought back into operation one-by-one. 11 Source: METI
