1 Wasilla High School 2010/2011 World History Course Syllabus Mrs. Burley / (907) A. Course Title: World History Semester: First and Second Course Outcomes: World Studies is designed to acquaint the students with the broad culture/society of which they are a part. The aim of the course is to increase the students awareness of human beings as social creatures and of the diverse cultures created by human beings. The following social studies skills will be developed: 1. The ability to read social studies materials. 2. The ability to communicate orally and in writing with exactness. 3. The ability to use reference materials, gather, evaluate, & report on social topics. 4. The refinement of map reading skills. Course Description This course is a survey course intended to increase and expand basic knowledge of beginning civilizations and their impact on one another as they evolve into the cultures that they are today. Course Text: Glencoe s WORLD HISTORY, 2010 Edition $ if lost or damaged!!! If you have Internet access at home, you can save yourself the agony of carrying home an 8 pound book and access your textbook on line at: Access Code: D1D4B90B1 Be sure to choose the correct book from the High School area and use our edition: WORLD HISTORY, 2010 Edition

2 B. Classroom Behavior and Citizenship 1. Be Prepared: a. Arrive to class on time, not as the tardy bell rings. Tardy is defined as not being in your seat, ready for class. 3 rd Tardy = Detention b. Have all necessary materials for class, no one will be allowed to return to their lockers after class has started c. Due to directives from the front office and from the student handbook, there is to be no food or drink brought into the classroom. Water is acceptable until we have to start arguing about sport drinks. d. Again, coming from the Principals, there are to be NO electronic devices at anytime. That means no cell phones, no I-pods, etc. The minute I see or hear one, they will be taken up and sent to the office for you to pick up at the end of the school day. Make sure all phones are turned off!!! e. Have assignments ready for due date, no exceptions f. Be attentive 2. Respect the rights of others to learn 3. Be respectful towards others, the room, and yourselves. 4. NO inappropriate language will be tolerated!! 5. Be Responsible!!!!!! C. Classroom Management Each student will follow the above mentioned rules for behavior. When an infraction occur, the teacher will: 1.Give a non-verbal warning. i.e.. the look 2.Give a verbal warning. 3.Conference with student in hallway AND phone parents. 4.Refer to principals offices ( The above order of steps taken may differ according to the type of disturbance.) D. Assigned Work All work accomplished in and out of class is to be turned in on assigned days. All work must meet time deadlines. It is your responsibility to know when things are due and make sure it is placed in the correct area. The day before each test is a review day. If you miss test review day, or the day of the test, you are still responsible to take the test the day you return, for tests are never a surprise, you will be well-informed ahead of time of when tests will be scheduled. Attendance is extremely important!

3 It is also your responsibility to make arrangements for make-up work OUTSIDE of class time. Make-up work is the responsibility of the student, and may not be able to be made up during class. Failure to arrange for make-up work within two weeks will result in no grade for that work!! Grades will be based on lesson and unit exams, classroom reports, research papers and class participation. Value of assignments usually varies according to the amount of effort required to complete an assignment. For example, a homework score may be assigned 10 points, where a chapter test may be given 150 points. The serious student completes all work, and as stated above, assignments directly relating to major goals must be completed. ***If you or your parents have any questions pertaining to grades or assignments that have been turned in, I-Parent and I-Student are available for you to utilize in finding out about those questions. Please look there first and then come ask me if you have any questions. It can also be helpful in answering the questions of what you have missed while absent and the deadline to make up certain assignments. It will save everyone time and effort. That s what it is for, please use it!!! E. Grading Scale A=90% - 100% B=80% - 89% C=70% - 79% D=0% - 9% F=0% - 59% F. Course requirements Student will: 1. Read assigned work from the text in class and at home 2. Participate in class discussion and activities, including note taking 3. Turn in all required work 4. Attend class. Daily points are given for various activities which cannot be duplicated. An alternate assignment will have to be completed to obtain those points. 5. Prove a basic understanding of the concepts discussed as assessed in various modes

(Organization and the ability to keep up with materials is a huge advantage in your pursuit of a good grade..practice it!!!) **Loose leaf paper or a notebook. **Pens and Pencils, preferably not mechanical pencils as you will inevitably run out of lead during class with no refills. **Color pencils would be helpful, but are not required.
