1 How to use your Nook to check out ebooks from the Howell Carnegie District Library. What you need: o Your Nook Registered with a valid Barnes & Noble (BN) online account o Your personal computer with internet access With Adobe Digital Editions installed and activated with an Adobe Identification (ID) Note: Your Adobe ID needs to be the same /password combination that you use for your BN online account. o Your Howell Carnegie Library card If your Nook and computer are set up, then proceed to Downloading an ebook on page 3. Otherwise, follow the instructions below. Spend a few moments with the Quick Start Guide that came with your Nook. o Make sure that you have: A valid Barnes & Noble online (BN.com) account A password - case sensitive and alphanumeric characters ONLY (az, A-Z, and 0-9), no blank spaces, no signs, no symbols or other special characters Including complete billing information, valid credit card with expiration date and associated billing address If you don t have a BN.com account, go to And look for the New to Nook? Here s how to register your Nook. on the right hand side, near the top. Note: when you create your BN.com account, you will want to use the same /password combination as your Adobe ID (if you already have one). o Register your Nook (instructions on Quick Start Guide) The following instructions are from the Digital Catalog and Download Center, the same location where you will check out your ebooks. You can access this information by following the links directly. The Digital Catalog and Download Center has a wealth of information under Getting Started (located in a box on the right hand side). On your personal computer you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions. To download and install Adobe Digital Editions, complete the following 1. To go to the Adobe Digital Editions download page, Adobe Digital Editions requires Adobe Flash Player. Windows Vista (or newer) requires Adobe Flash Player v (or newer). Windows XP and Windows 2000 require Adobe Flash Player v7.0 (or newer). To download and install Adobe Flash Player,

2 2. JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to install Adobe Digital Editions. For instructions on enabling JavaScript in your web browser, 3. Under the 'Download and Install' heading, click 'Install Adobe Digital Editions'. 4. Click 'Install' to begin installation of Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Adobe Digital Editions Installer' screen is displayed. 5. Click 'Yes' in the 'Adobe Digital Editions Installer' screen to begin the download of Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Adobe Digital Editions License' screen is displayed. 6. If you accept the terms of the license agreement, click the 'I Agree' button. Adobe Digital Editions is installed. Adobe Digital Editions opens once installation is complete. Next, you need to activate Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID: 1. Open Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed. 2. Click 'Continue'. The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed. 3. In the appropriate fields, enter the address and password for your Adobe ID. Note: Your Adobe ID needs to be the same /password combination that you use for your BN online account. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click 'get an Adobe ID online' and follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID. Note: Your Adobe ID needs to be the same /password combination that you use for your BN online account. 4. Click 'Activate'. Your computer is activated to your Adobe ID. 5. Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box. You should now be ready to search for and check out ebooks for your Nook.

3 Downloading an ebook: Go to the Digital Catalog and Download Center and search for and checkout a book. To access the Downloadable Books and Audios page from the homepage, mouse over the Books and More tab and click on Downloadable Books and Audios. Mouse over Click Or takes you directly to the Downloadable books and audios page. Or scroll down the homepage to the Download Audio & Ebooks box and click on Browse Digital Catalog to go directly to the Digital Catalog and Download Center. Click

4 Once on the Downloadable books and audios page, you can take the Overdrive Digital Media Guided Tour or enter the Digital Catalog and Download Center directly. Take a tour Search for books

5 Once at the Digital Catalog and Download Center, begin your search for a title to check out. Search by Title or Author Browse by format, always available or recently returned Getting Started includes: Quick Start Guide Digital Help FAQs Checkout Assistance Supported Portable Devices

6 Scroll down the page to browse by ebook Fiction or ebook Nonfiction Browse by ebook Fiction or ebook Nonfiction

7 For your Nook, you need an Adobe EPUB or Adobe PDF book. Look for these symbols: Adobe EPUB Adobe PDF If a book is available for checkout, it will give you the option of add to bookbag. If a book is not available for checkout, it will give you the option of place a hold instead.

8 Once the book is in your BookBag and you are ready to checkout, click on Proceed to Checkout

9 This is where you will login to your digital account. You will need to select your library and enter your library card number. You will confirm checkout on the checkout page. The next page is the Download page.

11 Once the Download starts, you will click on Open Adobe Digital Editions will open and you will see a transfer window

12 After downloading, Adobe Digital Editions may change screens to show the downloaded title in the Reading view. Click here to change to Library View You want to return to the Library view for transferring to the ereader. Click on icon in the top left corner looks like 3 books spin facing out.

13 Transferring from Adobe Digital Editions to the Nook: Connect the Nook to your computer. Launch Adobe Digital Editions - icon on desktop that looks like this Adobe Digital Editions automatically detects the presence of your Nook. It will show up on the left hand side listed under Bookshelves. Use title here to drag and drop Locate ereader here Drag title over to ereader In Library View, clicked on title (using the list of titles on the right hand side- not the single title above the Bookshelves list) and drag and drop into the Nook. Note that the Nook will put your downloaded ebooks in the My Documents section of the Nook, not the My B&N Library which is where it puts the books you purchase from B&N. So, if My Library opens My B&N Library remember to select View My Documents and you should find your downloads. Remember to use the Nook Quick Start guide, for navigation information.
