3 i) Bachelor of Science in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from a recognized University; ii) At least eight (8) years working experience with the Kenya Defence Forces (Navy) having attained the rank of Captain in the Marine or Weapons and Electrical Engineering Departments, or on board a ship dockyard or other relevant work set up etc.; The Officer will head the Marine Engineering Department and will be responsible to the Master /Captain for the following: (i) The operation, maintenance, performance and availability, security, custody and safety of all systems and equipment in his charge; (ii) Ensuring maintenance of the machinery and equipment and repair of defects immediately on discovery; (iii) Submit priority lists for repairs, maintenance or preservation of machinery or equipment; (iv) Organize maintenance work at the harbor to ensure ship is ready for service within a given notice for sea; (v) Submit a written report to the Master/captain on defect(s) that necessitate the ship to be put into port; (vi) Provide accurate estimates of fuel requirements, lubricating oils and quantities of water required; (vii) Control emissions of dark smoke and pollution of the sea by oil/water emulsion; and (viii) Organize, administer, train and maintain good order and of welfare of his staff. The Weapon and Electrical Engineer is responsible to the Master/Captain for: (i) Ensuring availability, maintenance and custody of weapon system, radars and radio equipment and all the ship s electrical and electronic equipment; (ii) maintenance and repair of all small arms held on board; (iii) Ensuring safety of all explosive stores and taking timely action in the event of accident; (iv) Ensuring safe and timely testing, fitting, maintenance of explosive stores; (v) Safeguarding storage, maintenance and efficiency of all associated test equipment; (vi) Calibrating direction finding equipment; (vii) Generating and distributing electricity for all electrical services and equipment; (viii) Ensuring that any electronic and acoustic emission from any equipment under maintenance, repair or test, are done only in accordance with the relevant policies in force; (ix) Repairing and maintenance of easily removable, portable and plug-in equipment; and (x) Ensuring that all radio, navigational and electrical equipment, including internal communication is functioning correctly before sailing. The officer at this level will be responsible to the Master/Captain for the following: (i) Managing and coordinating all the ship activities including work, drills, staff, policing and inspection; (ii) Investigating disciplinary matters and making recommendations to the Master/Captain for necessary action; (iii) Processing liberty lists and leave; and (iv) Inspecting and receiving readiness report upon clearance of a ship for action and reporting to the Master/Captain. An officer at this level will be responsible to the Executive Officer for: (i) Supervising staff working under the officer;

6 (ii) Ensuring standing and running rigging, hawsers, boat falls, derrick purchases and all items detailed in the list of portable fitting and spare gear are in serviceable condition; (iii) Providing storage and maintenance of all gear used for replenishment at sea under his custody; (iv) Taking charge of the ship s rigging warrant and inserting therein any alterations or additions which may arise during commissioning; (v) Ensuring that all gear, except hull fittings supplied for the working of the anchors and cables are maintained in an efficient condition and readily availed for use as appropriate; (vi) Assisting the officer detailed for cable duties at sea in ensuring that the anchors are secure and upon returning to the harbor that they are ready for use as appropriate; (vii) Securing against wind any stores carried out on the weather deck; (viii) Examining all canvas gear received on board under the officers custody and taking proper steps in keeping all such spares repaired, properly tallied, conveniently stored and readily availed for use when necessary; (ix) Inspecting and testing all gear under the officer s custody periodically in accordance with regulations and instructions; and (x) Keeping an accurate account of all defects of gear and fittings under the officer s custody and recording steps taken during tests and repairs when the ship is under refit. 7 The Coxswain is responsible to the 1 st Lieutenant and Officer of the Day for the following: (i) Effective and efficient performance of all aspects or regulating duties; (ii) General discipline and good order of the ship s (crew) at all times; (iii) Movement of personnel in and out of the ship at all times; (iv) Maintenance of correct records of the ship s company; (v) Maintenance of complete records of lost and found property and its disposal; (vi) Executing disciplinary measures fairly and in accordance with regulations; (vii) Supervising staff and ensuring compliance with routines and standing orders; and (vii) Ensuring that no trafficking of unauthorized persons, cargo, services, or liquor takes place onboard. VACANCY NO.7/2016: CHIEF ENGINEEING TECHNICIAN (CET), JOB GROUP L - (ONE POST) Ksh. 35,910-45,880 p.m. Ksh. 17,334 p.m. Ksh. 6,000 p.m i) Diploma in Mechanical or Marine Engineering from a recognized Institution; ii) At least eight (8) years working experience with the Kenya Defence Forces (Navy) and attained the rank of Warrant Officer II or Senior Sergeant in the Marine Engineering Department, onboard a ship, dockyard or any other iii) Good leadership and management skills; iv) Excellent communication skills; An officer at this level will be responsible to the Marine Engineer for: (i) Ensuring all the ship s machineries and auxiliary equipments are readily available for operation; (ii) Ensuring that the machinery spaces are kept clean and well maintained; (iii) Maintaining discipline of staff working the officer; (iv) Ensuring up to date maintenance of schedules and timely rectification of defects; (v) Keeping custody of all engineering tools and manuals;

8 (vi) Keeping up-date records of all engine room data; (vii) Ensuring pre-sea checks are done appropriately before the ship is ready to sail; (viii) Starting and closing down all machineries at appropriate times; (ix) Ensuring that the ship has enough fuel, lubricants and water before sail. VACANCY NO.8/2016: CHIEF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHINICIAN, JOB GROUP L - (ONE POST) Ksh. 35,910-45,880 p.m. Ksh. 17,334 p.m. Ksh. 6,000 p.m i) Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Institution; ii) At least eight (8) years working experience with the Kenya Defence Forces (Navy) and attained the rank of Sergeant or Corporal in the Marine or Weapons and Electrical Engineering Department, onboard a ship, dockyard or any other An officer at this level will be responsible to Weapon and Electrical Engineer for: (i) Day to day running of the Electrical and Radio Engineering Department; (ii) Ensuring operational availability of all the electrical and radio equipment; (iii) Raising and recording all the defects arising out of the electrical and radio equipment; (iv) Ensuring timely rectification of defects and carrying out electrical and radio routine and planned maintenance duties as scheduled; (v) Ensuring pre-sea checks are done appropriately before the ship is ready to sail; (vi) Ensuring all data recording is done appropriately at all times; and (vii) Ensuring safe custody of all electrical equipment and stores. VACANCY NO.9/2016: SEAMAN (ONBOARD SHIP), JOB GROUP K - (ONE POST)

11 An officer at this level will work under the Chief Electrical Engineering Technician and will be responsible for: (i) Operating the ship s electrical systems; (ii) Updating on the operational status of all equipment and recommending remedial measures to repair the defects; (iii) Carrying out maintenance routines as laid down in the planned maintenance schedules; (iv) carrying out all necessary checks and reporting on the status of the equipment before the ship proceeds to sea; (v) Keeping safe custody of equipment under the officer s custody; and (vi) Carrying out all electrical emergency repairs and carry out all maintenance schedules as necessary.
