Connection to the center of Europe is limited by different rail gauges. The PEITFM objective (Plan Estratégico de Impulso al Transporte Ferroviario de Mercancías) of 2010: intermodal transport 8-10% in 2020 (at present approx. 4%). On 26th September 2012, the Government presented the Plan for Infrastructure, Transport and Housing (Plan de Infraestructuras, Transporte y Vivienda - PITVI)
Long distance to Central Europe ~ 1500 km Tarragona
Long distances within the Iberian Peninsula Vigo Tarragona Lisboa Algeciras
Requisites to achieve competitiveness of the transport by rail ORIGIN DESTINATION For distance approx. The intermodal transport is competitive with long distances
Iberian gauge vs. European gauge (UIC) Third rail Iberian gauge: 1668 mm UIC gauge: 1435 mm
