2 2/7 Exhibitions from 30 January to 12 May Gilles Caron, the Conflict Within Visual memory of an epoch, Gilles Caron ( ) has chronicled the greatest contemporary conflicts through his images (Six-Day War, Vietnam War, Biafra and Northern Ireland conflicts, May 68, Prague Spring ), a commitment that eventually cost him his life while on assignment in Cambodia. Compounding 150 prints and archival documents from the Fondation Gilles Caron, the collection of the Musée de l Elysée and private collections, the exhibition is an opportunity to rediscover one of the major photojournalists of the twentieth century through an original approach. Coproduced by the Musée de l Elysée and the Fondation Gilles Caron, and supported by the Fondation Bru, the exhibition presented at the Musée de l Elysée is his first major retrospective. Exhibition curators Michel Poivert Professor, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Jean-Christophe Blaser Curator, Musée de l Elysée Nothin but Working Phill Niblock, a Retrospective Phill Niblock has produced, for over more than fifty years, a multidisciplinary work. His Intermedia Art features a combination of minimalist music, conceptual art, structural cinema, systematic or even political art, and strives to transform our perception and experience of time. Admittedly one of the greatest experimental composers of our time, Phill Niblock initiates his career as a photographer and film director. In 1968, the artist begins experimenting a combination of his visual productions with his musical scores in order to create architectural and environmental compositions with sound. The exhibition is presented simultaneously at the Musée de l Elysée and Contemporary Art Center Circuit, in Lausanne. 3 3/7 Exhibitions from 4 June to 1 st September Laure Albin Guillot, The Classical Challenge French photographer Laure Albin Guillot ( ) was quite popular during the interwar period. Her images were first featured in the 20s, but it is essentially in the 30s and 40s that she occupied the forefront of the photographic scene. She practiced various genres, from portrait to nude, landscape or still life, and to a lesser extent, reportage. She made use of the new channels of dissemination, distributing her photographs, and advertising creations, through the press and the publishing world. With the micrograph, Laure Albin Guillot offered new perspectives combining science and art. Christian Lutz, Rituals, Power Games Christian Lutz s photography (1973) is based on a scrupulous, almost sociological observation of human groups: politicians in the gimmicks of formal protocol, economic elites investing in emerging countries or missionary Christian Evangelists. While the formal qualities of his images are attractive, they nonetheless reveal a critical vision, deconstructing the major organs of power and their machinery. After dealing with political power in Protokoll and economic power in Tropical Gift, Christian Lutz focused on religious power, thus completing a fundamentally political and deliberately committed trilogy. 4 4/7 Exhibitions from 20 September 2013 to 5 January 2014 Sebastiao Salgado, Genesis Genesis is a photographic journey into the planet undertaken by the famous photographer between to rediscover the mountains, the deserts and the oceans, animals and people that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society. The land and life of a still pristine planet. Yet, Genesis is also a project that speaks urgently to our own age. By portraying the breathtaking beauty of a lost world that somehow survives, it proclaims: this is what is in peril, this is what we must save. Genesis is Sebastião Salgado s third long-term exploration of global issues, following Workers and Migrations, his examinations of the human toll wrought by radical economic and social change. This time, he is addressing our natural environment in offering a love poem in images to the majesty and fragility of our planet. The images are presented in five geographic areas: the south hemisphere, natural sanctuaries, Africa, the north hemisphere and the Amazon. On the occasion of the exhibition, a book will be published by Taschen. Curators Lélia Wanick Salgado and Daniel Girardin, Curator at the Musée de l Elysée Paolo Woods Both Canadian and Dutch, Paolo Woods took up photography in 1998, specializing in long-term projects. Among others, he has tracked the subject of international interests in the exploration of oil, and has published a detailed reportage on western debacle in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2010, he begins a new project by taking up residence in Haiti. Decided to deepen his work from the inside of a State, he discovers a nation that is extremely proud of its history, its language, its uniqueness and its vibrant culture. This time, being less interested in a subject per se than in the modes of its representation, Woods undertakes a more personal approach. With this project, he analyzes the multiple aspects of the Haitian society in order to produce an account of what the oxymoron nation without state implies for its citizens. 5 5/7 Other events 2013 La Nuit des images Friday 28 June, from 6 pm, in the Musée de l Elysée gardens Following the success of the previous editions, the Musée de l Elysée is currently planning its new edition for With the desire to create a high quality program, including contemporary creations, music and unexpected discoveries, Elysée offers its public a convivial and friendly event. La Nuit des images is an occasion for each and every visitor to celebrate images in the gardens of Elysée. With guest appearances and over 40 productions created by international and local artist, each edition is entirely new. In other words, the programming always remains exciting and surprising. Also, some of the screens are reserved to exterior guests artist groups, art schools, associations or institutions, curators, and so on. Being a true launch pad for young and promising talents, this event unites art and photography professionals as well as visitors from all horizons. ELSE by Elysée The fifth issue of the ELSE magazine comes out in June, at the time of Art Basel, the summer exhibitions at the Museum and the Nuit des images. Breaking away from the cult of beautiful images, from a history of photography modelled on the history of fine arts, and from a history of masterpieces, ELSE is a magazine focused on obsessions, and poor, distorted, diverted, appropriated, and re-appropriated images From comparisons to confrontations, from the historical to the contemporary, from the vernacular to the artistic, ELSE embraces all, mixes everything, and makes a game of classifying images into categories. A platform, network, and meeting-point for subversive opinions, ELSE invites an ever-growing circle of those who share its preference for difference. Why ELSE? Because ELySéE. ELSE is edited by the Musée de l Elysée and presents itself as Switzerland s photography magazine. 6 6/7 The Musée de l Elysée Mission The Musée de l Elysée is one of the world s leading museums entirely dedicated to photography. Since its establishment in 1985, it has improved public understanding of photography through innovative exhibitions, key publications and engaging events. Recognised as a centre of expertise in the field of conservation and enhancement of visual heritage, it holds a unique collection of more than 100,000 prints and preserves several photographical archives, in particular those of Ella Maillart, Nicolas Bouvier and Charlie Chaplin. By supporting young photographers, offering new perspectives on the masters and confronting photography with other art forms, the Musée de l Elysée experiments with the image. Based in Switzerland, it presents four major exhibitions in Lausanne each year and an average of fifteen in prestigious museums and festivals around the world. Education The Musée de l Elysée is deeply invested in educational programs aimed at sharing our passion for photography and its fascinating history with youth. The introductory courses and workshops are designed for children of 6-12 years. Additionally, the museum hosts regular conferences on the subject of photography with guest artists and museum collaborators. Bookstore and Café Elise With over 800 titles on photography and art, the museum s bookstore is one of the most complete in Switzerland. The Café Elise welcomes visitors in a meeting space enabling artistic exchange in an agreeable way.
