2 FROM THE PRESIDENT The 49th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian College of Dermatologists will be held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Perth, Western Australia, from Saturday 14 May to Tuesday 17 May Perth is a very pleasant and relaxed city. It is blessed with temperate weather and fabulous beaches. The booming economy has created a lively city with many top class restaurants and attractions. Major destinations close to Perth include Fremantle, a vibrant port city rich in maritime history, Cottesloe Beach, Rottnest Island and the superb wineries of the Swan Valley. Margaret River, comprising world-class wineries and pristine wilderness, provides a convenient weekend trip. The Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre is a five star complex located on the Swan River and close to Perth s famous Kings Park. I invite all College members and all medical professionals with an interest in dermatology to join us at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth in May A/Prof. Christopher Baker, FACD 2

5 VISITING SPEAKERS The visiting speakers will be: JOHN Mc GRATH, MD, FRCP FMe d S c i. John McGrath is Professor of Molecular Dermatology at King s College London and Head of the Genetic Skin Disease Unit, as well as Honorary Consultant Dermatologist at St John s Institute of Dermatology, the Guy s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust in London, United Kindgom. He qualified in medicine at Guy s Hospital (London) and then trained in dermatology at St John s Institute in London and did post-doctoral work in Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, United States of America. His main interests are in genetics and regenerative medicine and how these impact on dermatology and skin diseases, including the testing of new cell and gene-based therapies for genodermatoses. He is also involved in several next generation DNA sequencing initiatives including leading on rare skin diseases for the UK Department of Health 100,000 Genome Project. PETER MORTIMER, MD Peter Mortimer is Professor of Dermatological Medicine, St George s, University of London, United Kingdom. Professor Peter Mortimer trained in dermatology in Sheffield and Oxford. He was appointed Physician to the Skin Department at St George s and consultant skin physician to the Royal Marsden Hospital since 1986 and has been Professor of Dermatological Medicine to the University of London since Interest in lymphatics began in Oxford where he undertook his thesis on the measurement of skin lymph flow. Current research is focused on breast cancer related lymphoedema, the genetic basis of primary lymphoedema and lipoedema as well as melanoma spread by lymphatics. He has over 240 publications cited on PubMed. He has been Chief Investigator on research program grants from The Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research United Kingdom. His clinical practice deals almost entirely with chronic oedema, lymphoedema, lymphatic malformations, lymph-related disorders and lipoedema. He is a founder of both the Lymphoedema Support Network and British Lymphology Society and appointed the first Clinical Training Fellow in Lymphovascular Medicine in the United Kingdom. DIRK ELSTON, MD Dirk Elston is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, United States of America. He is Deputy-Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, incoming President of the American Society of Dermatopathology and served as President of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is an Honorary Professor at China Medical University in Shenyang, China and Guest Professor at the Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University in Changsha, China. Dr Elston is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, did his dermatology residency at Walter Reed Medical Centre and a dermatopathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr Elston is the author of over 325 peer reviewed publications, is the Associate Editor-in-Chief of emedicine Dermatology, is one of three authors of Andrews Diseases of the Skin and Editor-in-Chief of the Requisites in Dermatology series of textbooks. He received the 2008 Walter Nickel Award for Excellence in Dermatopathology Education and the 2013 Founder s Award of the American Society of Dermatopathology. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Dermatopathology and the American Board of Dermatology. CLARK OTLEY, MD Clark Otley is the Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, United States of America and is Professor of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Williams College in religion, Dr Otley completed medical school at Duke University School of Medicine and then completed an internship at Brigham and Women s Hospital in internal medicine. He completed his residency in Dermatology at Harvard University, serving as chief resident. Upon finishing residency, Dr Otley completed a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology at the Mayo Clinic. After completing his training, Dr Otley joined the staff at Mayo Clinic and has been a member of the Department of Dermatology since. Dr Otley is published widely in the areas of cutaneous oncology, skin cancer in organ transplant patients, skin cancer in immunosuppressed populations, and the optimisation of perioperative surgical management. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications. Dr Otley is the founding president of the International Transplant Skin Cancer Collaborative and serves as a Director of the American Board of Dermatology. Dr Otley also serves as the Medical Director for Mayo Clinic Ventures, whose mission is to commercialise Mayo Clinic technologies for the benefit of patients worldwide while generating revenue to support clinical practice, research, and education at the Mayo Clinic. 5

6 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM The convenor of the scientific program is Dr Daniel Hewitt, FACD, supported by the Scientific Meetings Steering Committee of the College. There will be a Registrars Forum for papers and case presentations by trainees of College. Trainees are encouraged to present papers wherever possible. There will be sessions on: Acne Contact dermatitis Melanoma Mohs surgery Non-melanoma skin cancer Paediatric dermatology Pigmentary diseases Free papers If there is a paper of sufficient merit, the F. & E. Bauer Foundation Prize will be awarded. Speakers are advised that they will not be considered for the prize if an abstract has not been submitted prior to the commencement of the meeting. INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS TO THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM All papers (free and invited speakers) and posters require an abstract. Presentations will have electronic PowerPoint support. The title should be brief and explicit. Excluding title, authors and institution, the abstract must not exceed 250 words. Any references (maximum of two) must be included in this allowance. Abbreviations should be used only for common terms. For uncommon terms, the abbreviation should be given in brackets after the first full use of the word. A 50 to 100 word CV is required from each presenter to facilitate the Chair s introduction. The timing (presentation and discussion) of all papers is to be set at the discretion of the convenor of each symposium. Notification of the timing of presentations will appear in correspondence sent to all successful authors. An abstract of each paper to be read must be submitted to the Honorary Secretary of College no later than 5.00pm on 27 November 2015 to facilitate compilation of the final program. Contributors are invited to submit their full pages for publication in The Australasian Journal of Dermatology. The full manuscript should be prepared for publication according to the editorial policy of the Journal and should be submitted before the Meeting, handed to the Chairman at the conclusion of the session or in any case forwarded not later than thirty days after the last day of the Meeting. INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS TO POSTER SESSION Posters will be displayed using a digital poster system throughout the Meeting, with a prize donated for the best poster. DESIGN OF POSTERS General Keep it simple! Keep it clear! Inform and interest the viewer. Use short titles and captions. Photographs Photographs need 1. Good contrast 2. Sharp focus 3. A scale to indicate size. 4. Clear caption set horizontally 6

7 ABSTRACT SUBMISSION Abstracts are invited for the Annual Scientific Meeting. They can only be submitted electronically. If you wish to submit an abstract, please proceed to the College website at and go to the Annual Scientific Meeting page in the College Events area and click on link for abstracts. Follow the instructions for submitting abstracts. All abstracts submitted will receive an acknowledgement. If your abstract is not acknowledged, please contact the ASM Secretariat. Please note that abstracts must be submitted via the website by no later than 5.00pm on 27 November TRADE EXHIBITION SOCIAL PROGRAM The social program will include the buffet dinner on Saturday 14 May 2016 in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre; and the ceremony for the Conferring of Diplomas on our most recent Fellows which will be held on Sunday 15 May 2016, also in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. A trade exhibition will be held in association with the Meeting at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Full details can be obtained from the College office or the College website.
