19 Working tempertures 3 Working tempertures nd pressure tbles The mximum temperture nd pressure rnge in ny system is dictted by the component with the lowest performnce rting. Remember to pressure test ll systems thoroughly fter completion. Tectite instlltions my be tested to 1.5 times their norml working pressure t mbient temperture. Achieving low tempertures For products used in wter systems, working tempertures of less then 4 C cn only be chieved if ntifreeze is dded to the system. Pressure Equipment Directive Since 30th My 2002 most pressure equipment nd ssemblies on the mrket in the United Kingdom hve hd to comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive (P.E.D.) Fittings re exempt from the P.E.D. unless they re incorported into pressure equipment, mening tht ll Tectite fittings re exempt. Tectite vlves re lso exempt. For detiled explntion plese visit: Fitting Tube/pipe used with Min. temperture Mx. temperture Tectite Crbon Crbon steel -24ºC 30ºC 65ºC 114ºC 20 br 20 br 16 br 10 br All performnce figures bsed on correct ssembly of fittings nd tube/pipe s detiled in instlltion instructions. Pressure testing of crbon steel systems The following recommendtions pply concerning the testing of XPress Crbon nd Tectite Crbon systems. Due to the potentil for corrosion nd perfortion of crbon steel tube nd fitting systems left prtilly drined for extended periods following hydrulic testing. It is recommended tht XPress Crbon nd Tectite Crbon systems be ir/nitrogen tested. If hydrulic testing must be undertken the following should be considered. 1. The test wter should contin nticorrosion chemicls with the intention tht post testing the system shll be left completely full of test wter (suitble protection ginst freezing will lso hve to be considered). 2. If leving the system full of wter is not prcticl then every effort shll be mde to fully drin nd dry the pipe work by purging with dry ir. Regrding the ir/nitrogen testing of pipe work with XPress Crbon crimped or Tectite Crbon push-fit fittings the following points will need to be considered. 1. The ir should be clen, dry nd free from oil. Excessive oil crry over in compressed ir my be detrimentl to the EPDM sels. This is not problem with nitrogen. 2. Air is mny times more serching thn wter. Hence, if the purpose of the ir test is only lek detection, then 0.5 br pressure will be more thn sufficient. Higher pressures cn in fct msk seling issues tht would be reveled by low-pressure tests. 3. The need for higher test pressures to prove the mechnicl integrity of the joints brings with it serious sfety issues. Testing for such filure mode with high-pressure ir/nitrogen is potentilly very dngerous s the energy stored in 5 br ir/nitrogen, when relesed suddenly, could led to dmge to equipment or more seriously, injury to personnel. HSE issue guidelines for such testing should be strictly dhered too. 4. It is therefore; recommended tht n initil low pressure test t 0.5 br is crried out, hving put the necessry sfety mesures in plce, to enble ny leks to be found. Significntly leking, un-pressed or dmged joints shll be replced, but those with low lekge rtes should be identified for close inspection during the high-pressure test. The full loding of the O rings often resolve smll leks identified during the 0.5 br test. When stisfied tht the system is sound nd hving the necessry sfety mesures in plce 1.5 times working pressure test cn be crried out s per the Copper Development Assocition (CDA) Guidelines document Pressure Testing Piping Systems. Leking joints t this stge should be identified nd mrked for replcement. The system pressure should then be reduced to 0.5 br gin to confirm tht no persistent low-pressure leks re present. Equipotentil bonding All metllic pipework systems should comply with the equipotentil bonding requirements of the current edition of the IEE electricl wiring regultions (BS 7671: 2001). After ll plumbing work hs been completed, lwys ensure gurnteed continuity checks re conducted by qulified electricin in ccordnce with regultions. Tectite Crbon Steel fittings ensure electricl continuity. Pegler Yorkshire 19

20 Tubes Tube bending Portble bending mchines re idel for copper tubes up to 28mm. Most mchines bend the tube between mtched formers nd bck guides tht support the outside dimeter (OD) of the tube. This elimintes the risk of the tube wll collpsing. The point t which the bending pressure is exerted must be mintined t the correct distnce in front of the former s point of support. It s lso importnt to keep formers nd guides well lubricted. Bending tubes correctly will void ny wrinkling nd flttening tht cn ffect flow conditions. Using djustble bending mchines (which llow the pressure on the bck guide to be djusted) will ensure perfect bends every time so long s the root (inside) bending rdius is t lest 3 times the outside dimeter of the tube. Techniques for expnsion stress relief Therml expnsion Never use so-clled cold drw techniques when designing expnsion joints into system contining ny Tectite push-fit fittings. These techniques my compromise the integrity of the surrounding joints. Design considertions Some contrcts my still require tht proprietry chemicls re used to clense nd flush pipework before full commissioning. Tectite is comptible with wide selection of products, to find out more contct us. 22 System design considertions nd tube expnsion Phenolic fom When using rigid phenolic fom (or other therml insultion) to lg pipework, lwys remember to refer to the lgging mnufcturer s fixing instructions. To void the risk of externl corrosion of pipework lgged with this fom, it is recommended tht such insultion products be instlled with moisture brrier. Mterils like Densopste or plstics covering pplied by the tube mnufcturer both provide n pproprite brrier between the outer surfce of the tube or fitting nd the fom. Some mnufcturers of this type of lgging supply their products with n internl, fctory-pplied sodium silicte or polyethylene brrier to prevent externl corrosion problems. If brrier product is required, it is recommended tht ll Tectite fittings re fully instlled nd pressure tested before these re pplied nd tht they re completely coted. Covered pipework Mking provision for therml movement is vitl where pipe-work of ny mteril is instlled under screed, plster or psses through brick or blockwork. The preferred prctice is to: pss tubes nd pipes through sleeves or conduits or to ly them in ducts surrounded by loose, non-rigid mteril such s vermiculite or glss wool. For further informtion, consult the publiction BS 6700:1997 Wter Services in Buildings. Locl Wter Authority It s wise to consult the Locl Wter Authority when it comes to pipework ccessibility. Pipework clernce When designing Tectite System, plese tke cre to ensure ll joints cn be mde. If you re in doubt, we recommend you refer to the Wter Regultions Guide (G2.11 nd R3.2), or by contcting the Wter Regultions Advisory Scheme info@wrs.co.uk. Mixed metl instlltions The substitution of stinless steel XPress or Tectite 316 fittings on glvnised crbon steel instlltion is cceptble in heting nd chilled wter pplictions, if required. When joining copper to crbon steel we recommend the use of yellow metl i.e. brss or gunmetl to prevent glvnic corrosion. When doing this, cre must be tken to protect the Tectite Crbon Steel Tube surfce from the incresed risk of externl corrosion t the stinless/glvnised steel interfce. Glvnised crbon steel is nodic to stinless steel in ir nd, if the pipeline is llowed to become wet, there is risk of loclised corrosion of the crbon steel tube surfce djcent to the stinless steel fitting. This potentil problem is less likely in heting pipe work which usully remins hot nd dry. In chilled wter instlltions, n ccumultion of environmentl condenste on the pipe work could, under some circumstnces, lech out ggressive chemicls from the insultion, resulting in corrosion, prticulrly t the stinless steel/crbon steel interfce. Consequently, we recommend tht where stinless steel fittings re instlled on crbon steel pipe, the joint re should be provided with dditionl protection to prevent loclised corrosion. This cn be s simple s wrpping the interfce re with n impervious mteril such s Denso or PVC tpe. Provided these precutions re tken, there is no reson why the combintion of stinless steel fittings nd crbon steel tube should not be entirely stisfctory. 22

The following pges give guidnce on how to instll the system correctly. Tectite Crbon my be one of the simplest systems to instll; however it still requires gret del of professionlism nd ttention to detil to chieve best performnce. The following pges give guidnce on how to instll the system correctly. Generl Advice The performnce of Tectite Crbon cn be gretly reduced if the pipe nd fittings become contminted with dirt nd debris. It is recommended tht the fitting/ pipe is not removed from pckging until bsolutely needed. Tectite Crbon Steel Tube cn be fully inserted by hnd nd requires no specil tools. Should the Tube require excessive force to mke joint, it is recommended tht the Tube be checked for dmge. The Tube should be checked to ensure it is round nd not ovl, s well s de-burring before ttempting to mke joint. Het/Flmes should never be pplied to Tectite Crbon Steel fittings, directly or indirectly. To void ny possible dmge to non-metllic prts, ll heted/welded joints should be llowed to cool prior to connecting Tectite Crbon fittings. All pipe work should be flushed to remove ny residul fluxes/debris. Tectite Crbon fittings with plin mle ends must not be used directly with cpillry fittings, since heting will dmge the nonmetllic prts. This lso pplies to plin end cpillry fittings. Size 15mm 18mm 22mm 28mm 35mm 42mm 54mm Tectite Crbon socket depths Socket depth Cutting nd De-burring 28mm 28mm 30mm 32mm 40mm 42mm 45mm Crbon Steel is inherently hrder mteril thn copper nd so requires tool with higher grde of cutting wheel. Pegler Yorkshire recommends the use of REMS cutting nd de-burring tools on Tectite Crbon Steel Tube. They offer wide rnge of mnul nd power cutting tools. The TC155 Crbon Cutter Wheel is comptible with the REMS Cento. Some of their tools re lso suitble for use on copper, brss, stinless steel nd luminium tube. Tools which re suitble for use with Tectite Crbon Steel re shown opposite. REMS Nno Pipe Cutter REMS Cento Pipe Clips re recommend to secure finished instlltions to prevent vibrtion nd movement. Preliminries REMS RAS Cu-Inox Pinting Fittings cn be pinted with wter bsed pints. Oil bsed or solvent bsed pints should be voided. Alwys select the correct sized tube for the pproprite fitting. Ensure ll prts re clen nd free from imperfections nd scores. REMS Pegler Yorkshire 23

24 Instlltion instructions 1 2 Cut Depending on the size of Tectite Crbon Steel Tube, different cutting tools will be required. For 15 22mm mnul Rotry Tube Cutter cn be used. For sizes 28mm nd bove Power Cutting Tool with Crbon Cutter Wheel will be required, for exmple REMS Cento. The TA155 Crbon Cutter Wheel, comptible with REMS Cento, is vilble which leves 1mm chmfer on the outside of the Tube. Tools for the job Chmfer nd deburr A chmfer cn be chieved esily using TC150 Externl Chmfer Kit or equivlent tool. If TC155 Crbon Cutter Wheel is used, chmfer will be utomticlly creted during cutting. Once the chmfer hs been creted, remover ny burrs or shrp edges from the externl nd internl tube using De-Burring Tool. Wipe the tube end to remove ll swrf nd debris Filure to do this correctly could cuse dmge to the O Ring nd compromise the performnce of the joint. TC155 TC150 S120 24

25 4 3 4 Mrk Push nd twist The fstest nd most ccurte wy of mrking the socket depth is by using TC117 Depth Guge. Alterntively use ruler or tpe mesure. Correct depths cn be found on pge 23. Filure to insert the tube to the correct depth will result in gretly reduced performnce. Mrk the joint using thick line to ensure tht it is still visible once fully inserted into the fitting. Before inserting the tube to the fitting, check the fitting to ensure the 'O' Ring nd Grb Ring hve not been contminted with ny grit or debris. Insert the tube into the mouth of the fitting nd rest ginst the grb ring. Ensure tht the pipe is not inserted t n ngle s this my cuse dmge to the 'O' Ring. Holding the tube in-line with the fitting socket, push the tube firmly with slight twisting ction. Do so until the tube reches the tube stop with positive click. Check the depth insertion mrk to ensure it corresponds with the mouth of the fitting, then pull firmly to ensure the fitting is secure. TC117 Pegler Yorkshire 25
