3 Flight efficiency in the Federal Republic of Germany The key performance indicator (KPI) used by the PRC for horizontal en-route flight efficiency is en-route extension. En-route extension is defined as the difference between the length of the actual route (A) and the great circle distance (G) between the departure and arrival terminal areas (radius of 30 NM, or alternatively 40 NM around the airport). Percentage en-route extension is defined as the ratio between the en-route extension and the great circle distance (G).
