1 Aloha Radford High School! We are well into the 2 nd quarter of school and we have seen our students grow and engage in the various activities and programs on campus this year. I would like to take this time to acknowledge all our students for their commitment to our school mantra of Discipline, Respect, and Responsibility. I also would like to thank all of our students and families for their support of all of our academic, athletic, and special programs here at Radford High School. We have seen our students thrive in these areas with a tremendous amount of students having academic success and maintaining high grade point averages. Our Radford Red Brigade band program did an outstanding job during their fall marching season. Our band program put in many hours of marching practice to prepare for this season. It was evident by their outstanding performances the level of commitment these students strive for. The student, parents, boosters and band teachers have put Radford High School on the map and we look forward to many more exciting performances. Congratulations to our Varsity Cheerleading team who won the State Championship in the medium division! We appreciate all the hard work that was put in to a successful season and a big Mahalo to their supporters and coaches who made this possible. I believe one reason we have seen growth and academic success of our students is because of their engagement in extra curricular activities on campus. More than 60% of our students participate in athletics and other programs on campus. This has given families opportunities to show support and be involved in their education. I encourage all of you to promote these activities and to have our students become well rounded and exposed to many different avenues for education. 2 This month, Radford s student council had the opportunity to assist Pearl Harbor Elementary in their annual fair. From 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, we helped man the multiple rides and games. It was a fun experience and enabled our class to bond with the younger kids and gain character through this service. Our next task is the Career day. Many different people volunteer to visit our school and speak of their vocations, offering us insight into possibilities for the future. Student Council helps by offering assistance to these volunteers and welcoming them to our school. In order to celebrate Thanksgiving the Student Council is hosting a Turkey Trot. Through a relay race, the students of Radford will compete for a chance to win a Thanksgiving treat. This whole event is thought up by, hosted by, and prepared by our Student Council class, and hopefully, the students enjoy it. The last item in this month's schedule is the fall sports assembly. This is when the school recognizes all of the athletes and their achievements for the fall season of sports. Student Council is responsible for running this whole assembly. Student Council is prepared for the next month of December and whatever opportunities we get to take! We will be hosting our 8th annual free picture taking in the cafe during lunch. Coach Gino and student council decorates the stage and takes pictures and develops it for FREE for you and your friends. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! 2

3 Aloha! The University of Hawaii at Manoa would like to inform you of our New Warrior Scholarships, for incoming local freshman. There are three New Warrior Scholarships : Regents, Chancellor s and Manoa Merit, all of which can be applied for on one simple application and are valued at over a combined $1.5 million. Last year 1 student at Radford High School was offered a New Warrior Scholarship totaling $20,000 over the course of 4 years. 4 RADFORD ANNOUNCEMENTS SENIOR LEADERSHIP Aloha Seniors and families! We have amazing news to share about our last Blood Drive! On November 9th, we held a second Blood Drive and we are happy to say that we have surpassed our goal of 38 pints and collected a total of 46 pints! With two more blood drives to go, we are excited to see what else we can achieve. In addition to the Blood Drive, we want to thank Mrs. Kahalewai and her culinary class for providing scones for those who donated! Senior Leadership also incorporated a Senior Advisory competition. The advisory earned points by; 1) turning in a form, 2) attempting to donate but unfortunately being deferred, 3) successfully donating, 4) a teacher successfully donating. After totaling up all the points, Mrs. Kahalewai s advisory won. As a prize they will receive a pizza party! It s unbelievable that there are only about four weeks left of Second Quarter. Our Senior Leadership is working very hard to kick off upcoming events in the second semester. Our future events such as Senior Luau and Junior-Senior Prom are underway! Luau is on January 15th at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Early bird pricing will start at $45 starting November 23 rd and go up to $50 on November 30 th! Price will go up fast so be on the lookout for our flyers! Please keep an eye out for announcements and advertisements on our upcoming events! 5 RADFORD ANNOUNCEMENTS JUNIOR LEADERSHIP "The Junior Leadership class have kept busy organizing various activities, such as a kickball game to bond with the Sophomore Leadership class. We are also working on painting a photography mural right outside room 152 for Ms. Casaus as a community service project. Our Leadership class is also planning for next year's activities, such as senior picnic. We are also planning a recycling community service project that we will possibly start next quarter. The Junior Leadership class will like to thank all Juniors who have showed their support by buying and wearing the class t-shirt and making our past Homecoming Assembly a great one." 5

6 RADFORD ANNOUNCEMENTS SOPHOMORE LEADERSHIP The past few months the Sophomore leadership class has done so much. We have set and accomplished goals for ourselves, and along the way helping others. The leadership class began meeting during summer; preparing for the new school year, especially Homecoming. We were determined to be on top and show other classes that we got what it takes to be on top, while offering friendly competition we would have loved to stray away from work just to help anyone in need. During the preparations we the leadership class noticed that excitement of the class of 2018, and that gave us energy to strive to the best we can for them. The class of 2018 is now planning and putting things in motion for the upcoming year of 2016, we have been planning on many community service projects and school activities. We are looking forward to be doing so many things this school year and while also becoming closer to out student peers. Go Rams! Go Class of

7 FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP The Freshmen Leadership class is working with the Hawaii Foodbank to feed the less fortunate this holiday season. The food drive is being held from Nov 9th - Dec 4th. Students are encouraged to donate canned meats, fruits, vegetables, meals, and rice. The Advisory class to donate the most goods will win a pizza party! 8 This month Japanese Club had to two different service projects they were involved in. The first was helping Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary teachers and PTO with their Family Fun Fair. They helped run games, concession, and clean up. The second service project was being part of the Aki Matsuri celebration, a Japanese festival that honors children and traditions brought by Japanese immigrants to Hawaii by commemorating the Japanese traditions of Bunka no Hi (Culture Day) and Shichi Go San (Seven, Five, Three Festival). Radford Japanese club offered the fun of origami. 8

9 Attention Juniors! Mark your calendars! Our school will be administering the Smarter Balanced Assessment to all 11 th graders on Thursday, April 7, 2016 and Monday, April 11, On both days, students will be released from school at 2:10 pm. 12 ASACS (Adolescent Support And Counseling Service) is a school and communitybased, free, voluntary, and confidential service provided by the Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs (ACSAP.) ASACS offers Prevention Education and Counseling services to individuals and their families. Parents can contact an ASACS Counselor to discuss concerns, gain parent support, and receive a referral to other services when appropriate. Teens can seek ASACS counseling and prevention at our school office in room 191 on RHS campus, or at our off-campus offices located at Aliamanu Military Reservation (AMR) Community Center or at Schofield Barracks. ASACS Counseling services include: initial screening/assessment, early intervention and outpatient levels of care. ASACS Counselors for Radford High School are on campus daily: M,W,TH- Ms. Mary Schwing LMFT, CSAC T,F- Ms. Linda Lassiter LMHC, CAS office: MFLC - Military & Family Life Counseling - Free confidential counseling for military families - Sheryl Holland or Steve Prince/Teen Care abuse treatment program, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. It is staffed by two substance abuse counselors. Students can use the program through self-referral, peer-referral, and administration placements. Treatment runs through a sixteen-week course that includes individual and group sessions, and field trips. Treatment is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL... 14 The first option is from the University of Hawaii. Free math tutoring online is available for any public school student. It is a live session and tutors are graduate students and upper level undergrads. For more information please go to The second option is from a company called tutor.com ( The attractive part of this service is that it provides live, real-time responses to questions in any of the following subject: math, science, English, or social studies. Military families (Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve members in the Army, Marines, Navy or Air Force and their dependents) can receive this service for free. 14

EXCEPTION WOULD BE IF THE STUDENT DROVE THEMSELVES TO SCHOOL AND NEEDS TO LEAVE FOR AN APPOINTMENT, IN WHICH CASE THEY NEED TO CHECK OUT WITH THE FRONT OFFICE FIRST.
