3 3 FAIRFIELD CITY SCHOOLS QUALITY PROFILE ARTS Participation in performing and visual arts inspires students creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Fairfield students take pride in their many accomplishments in the arts: Visual arts awards: Our students participate and place in regional and state competitions that draw attention to our outstanding visual arts program. Theatre programs provide students an opportunity to experience dramatic performances by recreating world-renowned productions that range from Phantom of the Opera to the whimsical fantasy The Wizard of Oz. Students are also given real-world opportunities to direct, perform in the orchestra, design and build sets, run sound, and manage productions. Performing arts awards: Marching Band earned Superior ratings at every competition in 2012, including a Superior rating at the OMEA state finals. 17 students performed with the District XIII High School Honor Bands, and 11 in the District XIII Freshman Honor Band. Middle School band members were also part of the honor bands for this grade level. Several students were selected to participate in the Great Miami Youth Symphony and Wright State Honor Band, to name a few of the accolades. The Choraliers mixed show choir earned worldwide fame after being named World Champion and Gold medalist in the 2012 World Choir Games. In 2013 this talented group was the FAME National Finals 3 rd runner-up. There are two other show choirs that have fared just as well in competition - the all-female group Pure Elegance, and Rhythm Express, made up of members in grades 7-9. Our talented groups have earned 6 show choir national titles since Music and Arts offered: Band, orchestra, vocal, chamber and ensembles, show choir, art, advanced classes in drawing, ceramics and painting, photography, publication design We culminate the hard work done by our students and staff each year with Arts Fair, a celebration of the fine arts in the district at the end of each school year. In its 52nd year, the Arts Fair is an important part of FCSD history.

4 4 FAIRFIELD CITY SCHOOLS QUALITY PROFILE COMMITMENT TO IMPROVEMENT Processes and programs are continuously evaluated to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. The work to provide the best programs possible for students is ongoing and includes parent, student, and teacher surveys for Title I use of funds; participation in the Tell Ohio survey and in the Instructional Improvement Survey. Staff, students, parents and community members are also invited to annual High School Community Engagement sessions. DIGITAL LEARNING Technology is essential to enhance teaching and learning and to give students a competitive edge in a global market. FCSD has been upgrading and implementing the district s technology plan: High School/Freshman School: The Freshman School will offer a health course in a blended learning manner this school year. Two classrooms were outfitted with equipment to allow students access to electronic resources during class time. Three labs were added at the Senior High School a classroom lab in the English department for research and class projects; a lab in the special education department for instruction, and another for research and class projects. Middle school: Computers were added to a new team that will use them in a blended learning environment. Units in the computer classes were also upgraded. Elementary schools: Two fixed computer labs were added to each of the five elementary schools. These labs will be used for online assessments and keyboarding instruction. They are also available to classes for research and other projects to help meet the technology components of the new standards. Two labs were added at the Intermediate School to bring the total of open labs to four. These labs will serve many purposes including online assessment, keyboarding, research, and other class projects. Smartboards continue to be used in daily instruction in all schools.

Cost per pupil: $8,008 Percentage spent on instruction: 56.9% FY 2011 District Profile Report: PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Educational experiences are enhanced by partnerships between the school district and community. Parents and Teachers for Children (PTC) organizations are active supporters of students and staff and provide fun learning opportunities. with programs that range from tutoring and sharing professional skills, to reading in classrooms, and volunteering at school events. Athletics and arts boosters help sustain programs in sports, music and drama. The Community Diversity Alliance groups promote and celebrate diversity within our school community with cultural events and educational experiences. The Equity Leadership Team works to ensure the district s Equity Plan is followed. The Minority Recruiting and Retention Committee is making strides with increased minority hiring, while seeking ways to retain staff of color. We collaborate with area churches for additional services from tutoring to providing outreach to individuals in need. We reach out to senior citizens each quarter by providing lunch and student entertainment through a partnership with a local retirement community. Our many business partners generously provide incentives for positive student behavior and hard work in the classroom.

6 6 FAIRFIELD CITY SCHOOLS QUALITY PROFILE STAFF LEADERSHIP Student growth and achievement are facilitated by high-quality staff members. 71.7% of FCSD teachers have a master s degree or higher. 100% of FCSD teachers are highly qualified for the classes they teach. STUDENT ACTIVITIES A well-rounded education includes a wide variety of opportunities. Students in the Fairfield City Schools have a range of athletic and extracurricular activities from which to choose. Number of athletic teams: 24 Activities/clubs: Sports, student government, honor societies, drama, music, foreign language and art clubs, Tri-M, theatrical productions, show choir, Interact, tutoring and mentoring, dance team, cheerleading, multicultural organizations, pep band, SADD, Science Olympiad, Destination Imagination, yearbook club, peer mediation.

7 7 FAIRFIELD CITY SCHOOLS QUALITY PROFILE STUDENT LEADERSHIP Students experiences are enhanced by serving their school and community. Interact students at Fairfield Senior High School work with the local Rotary International organization to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in the community. Our student government and honor society students at the Fairfield Senior High School, Fairfield Freshman School and Fairfield Middle School participate in and lead various outreach programs throughout the school year. Our elementary school students participate in activities to raise money and awareness for many worthy causes throughout the year. The district administration is currently investigating the possibility of a community service requirement for high school students. STUDENT SERVICES A variety of services provide options to ensure all students receive individualized instruction, enrichment and support. The Fairfield City Schools offers Visions program and cluster groups beginning in 3 rd grade.
