We have officially made it through the first marking period of the school year. This is a great time to reflect on what we did well, and what we could do better, and also make the changes necessary to ensure academic success moving forward. I want to take a moment to welcome Ms. Desiree White-Foster, our new culinary arts teacher. She comes to us with an extensive background in teaching. I know our students are happy to be back in the kitchen and they will give Ms. Foster the HJSHS welcome she deserves. A special thanks to all our fall sports teams who have given us all a lot to cheer for. Good luck to our football team; we wish We are so proud of freshman Peter Gutierrez and his passion for airplanes! Peter's planes will be the subject of an exhibit at the Hoboken Historical Museum in November. Everyone who knows Peter can observe his passion as he always seems to be building or designing aircraft. We strongly encourage the entire Redwing Community to go to his exhibit. Ever since his mother took him to an airshow and let him take a you great luck as we head into playoff season. Ms. Piccapietra HJSHS Principal 9th Grade Student Aims for the Sky ride in a B-24, at age 9, Peter has been fascinated by airplanes. He started making drawings of aircraft, and then his grandfather, a civil engineer who spent a career working on cars, trains and other machines, encouraged him to work on model aircraft and gave him books on how to fold paper into airplanes. Before long, he ran out of room to display all the models he s made from kits or from balsa wood or paper. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : News from the Student Center Senior High Group Heads to Philadelphia Ms. Miller appointed to the Executive Board for the STANJ Meet your Teacher: Mrs. Kraven HJSHS November Calendar 4 Student of the Month 5 Junior & Senior Fundraisers 5 Part of his growing collection of invented aircraft will go on display in an Upper Gallery exhibit titled, Let it Fly: Model Airplanes by Peter Gutierrez, which opens Sunday, Nov., 201. Peter will return to the Museum to give a demonstration of his aircraft making skills on Sunday, Nov. 17, during the city s regular Third Sunday Gallery Walk. The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 8,

3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 P A G E Hoboken Senior High Group Heads to Philadelphia On a gorgeous fall day, the Red Wings headed south to Philadelphia for a day of history and finance at the US Constitution Center and the Federal Reserve Bank. Now most students eyes would glaze over when learning of their destination, but the group left the City of Brotherly Love surprised and enlightened. First stop: the state of the art Constitution Center. Students were immersed in a D presentation chronicling the struggles of our country and illuminating the vision of our founding fathers. The center's exhibit of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs truly reinforced the meaning of freedom of speech. Images of love and hatred, peace and war took students beyond their comfort zones and made them think about other societies that lack so many freedoms. Then, changing gears a bit, the group headed over to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The group was hooked when our tour guide told us that 2 football fields of cash were sitting several floors below us in the bank's vaults. But the visit was more than "the Benjamins" under our feet. Lessons on credit, inflation and counterfeiting left the group incredibly well informed on the role of the Federal Reserve. Thanks to Mr. Taraszkiewicz for organizing the informative educational experience. Ms. Miller voted onto the Executive Board for the STANJ On October 22nd, Ms. Danielle Miller attended The Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey (STANj) Fall Teachers' Conference at Montclair State University. STANj is the voice of advocacy for the inclusion of speech and theatre arts in the educational curricula. During the conference, Ms. Miller was voted onto the Executive Board for the STANj organization. The association includes members from elementary, middle, high school, college, and professional theatre who are interested in acting, directing, forensics, musical theatre, and technical theatre. While Ms. Miller was always a member, she is now part of 12 educators from across the state on the executive board that helps promote arts education in Nj. She will be helping to organize the statewide competition on February 1, 2014 at Rutgers University that our Hoboken students attend yearly. The competition recognizes outstanding students and teachers through scholarships and through the NJ Governor's Award in Arts Education. She is ecstatic to be a part of the executive board. It is going to be a wonderful experience for herself, our students, and the District. Meet your Teacher: Mrs. Kraven Mrs. Kraven is a graduate of Indiana University and has been teaching middle school since She began her Hoboken teaching career at Wallace and has also had the pleasure of working at Brandt and Connors. Mrs. Kraven is excited to be part of the new Junior High and enjoys seeing many of her previous students in the hallways of Hoboken Senior High School. After enjoying living in Hoboken for fourteen years, Mrs. Kraven has recently moved out of town with her family. Mrs. Kraven is currently the 7th & 8th Grade English Teacher in the Junior High School. If you would like to welcome Mrs. Kraven to the new Junior High School she can be reached at erin.kraven@hoboken.k12.nj.us or ext
