2 Introduction Most evolution leaps in structural engineering were related to the arrival of new construction materials, new construction and erection techniques or smart combinations of the existing in new types of structures and structural members. Reinforcing concrete with mild or prestressing steel, the cantilever construction method, steel-concrete and timberconcrete composite construction, or fiber-reinforced polymers are witnesses to this development, to only mention a few. The main drawback of most construction materials used to today, however, is a lack of sustainability. The economically most successful construction methods reinforced concrete, steel and masonry exploit non-renewable natural resources, demand a lot of energy for production and transportation or are difficult to recycle. Hybrid construction is novel or unusual merging of structural materials and structural elements providing an overall performance superior to the sum of its components, thereby going substantially beyond traditional and conventional composite structures (e.g. steel-concrete, timber-concrete). Innovative structural engineering solutions combine different materials, construction detailing and smart construction processes and techniques in a way that offers the most effective answer to fulfilling specific performance criteria and to supporting the objectives of sustainability in construction. Sustainability aspects o Life-cycle analysis o Compatibility and recyclability o Flexibility of use, feasibility of adaptation o Economic performance o Environmental performance Call for Contributions and Review Procedure Extended abstracts in English can be submitted until Feb. 3, 2014 to hybrid2014@hefr.ch. The abstracts should be a maximum of 750 words with explanatory figures and images, altogether not exceeding two pages DIN A4, and indicate the associated theme A-E. Acceptance of contributions will be decided by the scientific committee in a one-stage procedure based on the extended abstracts only. Plenary sessions are opened with an invited lecture, followed by short presentations from the open call-for-contributions offering the opportunity to briefly present ideas and intentions related to a specific topic. The subsequent poster discussion sessions allow detailed and individual discussion among participants and presenters. Keynote and invited lectures Renowned national and international speakers are invited on a multidisciplinary basis and aim to present the best skills and experience in their respective fields of expertise. Workshop documentation The workshop will not be provided with printed proceedings. Authors will be asked to submit a two-page short paper as PDF file, containing references to further reading, and to individually bring a poster (DIN A1 portrait format) for the poster discussion sessions. The short paper will be made available as PDF for download during and after the workshop. Social program The social program will include a welcome reception at the venue on Sunday evening and the Apéro Riche at the CEA- FR Structural Laboratory on Monday evening. Coffee and lunch breaks will further allow refreshing old and deepening new contacts. Workshop language The official workshop language is English. No simultaneous translation is provided. 4 Participants The workshop addresses structural and civil engineers, architects, contractors and other professionals interested in the latest achievements and developments in research, design, construction, conservation, durability and performance of hybrid structures. 5 General Information The region of Fribourg Fribourg was founded in 1157 by Duke Berthold IV of Zaehringen. Nestling by its meandering river, the Sarine, it is acknowledged to possess one of the finest ensembles of medieval architecture in Europe. Latin and Germanic people have been living together in Fribourg for centuries. In its streets, you hear not only French mixed with Germanic dialect, but also Italian, English, Spanish, and other languages. Fribourg station is regularly and frequently served by train from all major Swiss airports. All major credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels and shops. Electricity is supplied in 230V at 50 Hz. Plugs of type J (3 pins) or type C (two pins) are needed. Languages usually understood in hotels and shops are French, German and English. The weather in Fribourg in June may vary from nice and warm to slightly clouded or rainy.
