CENTRUM NAUKOWO-TECHNICZNE KOLEJNICTWA HIGH SPEED RAILWAY LINE WROCŁAW/POZNAŃ ŁÓDŹ - WARSAW

JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT Strategy of Lower Silesia region: Existing layout of transport connections discriminates the region. The connections with decision centres (Warsaw) are very bad and create barriers for transit Extremely long journey time between Wroclaw and Warsaw: About 6 hours through Łódź (385 km) Almost 5 hours through Poznań (466 km) Transport isolation of Kalisz area Lack of capacity on some E20 main line sections between Poznań and Warsaw Bad condition of transport infrastructure and poor level of public transport Growing usage of private cars Congestion on roads

JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT SPO (Sectoral Operational Program) Transport for the years in the framework of National Development Plan includes beginning of construction of the high speed railway between from Wrocław to Warsaw through Łódź Construction of Warsaw Wrocław high speed railway through Kalisz and building the link to Poznań will significantly improve transport situation in 4 voivodships Estimated journey time will be significantly better than in case of road and air transport (taking into account time of journey between city centre and the airport and time for check-in procedures): Łódź Warsaw 45 min Wrocław Warsaw 1 h 40 min Poznań Warsaw 1 h 35 min

STEPS OF THE PROJECT Realization of the project includes 4 steps: Step I: Pre-feasibility Study done by CNTK (ordered by PKP PLK S.A.) Step II: Feasibility Study Step III: Designing obtaining building permits Step IV: Construction of HS line

CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIANTS Two groups of variants have been defined: 4 variants of new railway line dedicated exclusively for high speed passenger traffic only (variants 1-4) 3 variants basing on upgrading of existing railway lines (variants 5-7) combined with construction of relatively short new sections (variants 6, 7). For these variants overlapping of high speed passenger, regional passenger and freight services has been assumed

CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIANTS Variants 1-21 New sections (HS line) on almost 100% of route Utilisation of short sections of existing lines at the approaches to large railway nodes, in several cases with the construction of additional tracks Two options for Łódź node: Option I HS line running at the northern outskirts of the agglomeration together with system of links to Łódź Kaliska and Łódź Fabryczna stations Option II east west HS connection through the city centre of Łódź with new underground Łódź Fabryczna station and the tunnel Kalisz as branching point for two diversions of the line: to Poznań and to Wrocław South-east approach to Wrocław railway node through Czernica Siechnice Wrocław Brochów

CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIANTS Variant 3 Construction of HS line Two options for Łódź node: Option I HS line running at the northern outskirts of the agglomeration together with system of links to Łódź Kaliska and Łódź Fabryczna stations Option II east west HS connection through the city centre of Łódź with new underground Łódź Fabryczna station and the tunnel Poznań branch running through area of Kalisz Wrocław branch passing in the area of Sieradz and Wieruszów with partial utilisation of disused railway between Kępno and Oleśnica South-east approach to Wrocław railway node through Czernica Siechnice Wrocław Brochów

CHARAKTERITSICS OF VARIANTS Variant 4 Variant basing on existing concepts of HS line alignment parallel to A2 motorway between Warsaw and Poznań Warsaw Wrocław connection according to spatial development plans of Łódź and Lower Silesia voivodships Modernisation of Łódź Sieradz and Wieruszów Wrocław sections and construction of a new Sieradz Wieruszów section The variant can be treated as intermediate between purely HS variants (1-3) and variants basing on modernisation of existing sections

CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIANTS Variant 5 Modernisation of existing railway through Skierniewice Koluszki Łódź Widzew - Łódź Kaliska Ostrów Wielkopolski The maximum speed of 160 km/h

CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIANTS Variants 6 i 7 Modernisation of existing sections Construction of new sections with length of around 60 km, between Łask and Wieluń (variant 6) and Sieradz and Wieruszów (variant 7) respectively Utilisation of existing (Wieluń -) Wieruszów Kępno Oleśnica Wrocław route Electrification of Kępno Oleśnica section Building missing sections of the second track Maximum speed of 200 km/h (for new sections 250 km/h)

RECOMMENDED VARIANTS Multicriterial analysis (MCA) Selection of two variants for analysis in the Feasibility Study: Variant 1 Variant 3

ŁÓDŹ CMK LINK CMK = Central Trunk Line high standard rail connection between Warsaw, Katowice and Kraków being upgraded for 250 km/h The link between Łódź and CMK considered as crucial part of the future HS network in Poland: Planned for passage of HS trains between CMK and planned new HS line Wrocław/Poznań Łódź Warsaw Tasks for realisation: Modernisation of line nr 25 between Łódź Kaliska and Tomaszów Mazowiecki (55,7 km) for the speed of km/h Modernisation and electrification of line nr 25 on the Tomaszów Mazowiecki Opoczno section (26,2 km) for 140 (160) km/h Construction of a new section Słomianka Opoczno South (3 km)

ŁÓDŹ CMK LINK Modernisation of existing Łódź Opoczno line, together with the construction of a link to Opoczno South (CMK) station will improve connection between Łódź and Kraków Shortening of the Łódź Kaliska - Kraków Główny distance to 253 km Significant improvement of speeds on particular sections of route Compatibility with the upgrading of CMK for V=250 km/h and with modernisation of Psary Kraków section Feasible Łódź Kaliska Kraków journey time less than 2 hours Creation of a new link: Kraków Łódź Poznań Szczecin Kraków Poznań 3 h 15 min, Kraków Szczecin 5 h 05 min The most attractive connection between Kraków, Poznań and Szczecin
