1 Course Beyond Bioethanol Edition BE-Basic Brazil & TU Delft Brazil & Unicamp E.J.Bakker, G. Valenca Paim & L.A.M. van der Wielen
2 Course Beyond Bioethanol edition 2015 offered by: FEQ/UNICAMP & Delft University of Technology & BE-Basic Responsible Professors: Prof. Gustavo Paim Valença (FEQ/Unicamp) and Prof. Luuk van der Wielen (TU Delft & BE-Basic) Period: August to November, 2015 (4 credit points) Venue: Unicamp (NIPE and FEQ) Course objectives The course will provide insight in how the advances in biobased production technology and sustainable process design can be developed into new business development. It will show the link between science and technology development, and translate this into business goals and a business plan, providing an understanding of market potential and finances. Learning objectives After successful examination of the course, students will be able to - translate latest science and technology concepts into a business case for production of a biorenewable chemical product - make a technological design for the production process - evaluate the risk, benefits and (economic) feasibility of a business case - understand the concept and importance of sustainability - evaluate and assess the sustainability of a business case in a simple LCA procedure - make a simple business plan - present the business plan in a form that can be assessed by a possible financer Course program The course will start with an introduction of successful business cases in industry. Student groups will develop a compact business plan, including a technoeconomic design for a selected case for integrated biochemical-biofuelsbioenergy production. Lectures to support the further understanding of advances in science and technology; the use of feedstock and sustainability, process integration and design; and economy and business finance will be provided by experts from Unicamp, TU Delft and partners. Students will make a business plan that will be presented to a panel jury. Student groups will be supported by staff from Unicamp and TU Delft. Several intermediate sessions are planned to monitor progress and provide feed-back to students. Examination The business plan and presentation will both be assessed by the course professors and marked using the usual Unicamp system. Course material Students will be provided with a digital reader Biobased business beyond bioethanol, produced by UNICAMP, TU Delft and BE-Basic.
