5 Course Goals To learn the basic concepts of social network analysis (SNA) Apply social network analysis in practice by analysing online communities using a social network analysis tool called Condor Work in globally distributed multi-disciplinary virtual teams Learn scientific writing by reporting the group work results in a final paper

6 Multi-disciplinarity This is a demanding course, as it combines skills from many interdisciplinary fields: Social network analysis Using our own tool Condor for analyzing online social networks Statistical methods, Data Mining and Filtering Software development Concept visualization and information modeling Group work: combination of multi-disciplinary skills

10 Passing & Grading Passing the course requires ALL the following: Presence at lectures & virtual meetings (80%) Passing all individual assignments Passing the group work assignments, presentations and writing of a final paper Answering the course surveys Filling in the course feedback form The Course grade consists of: 1) Project work 60 % 2) Pre-exam 10 % 3) SNA assignments 15 % 4) Lecture diary + Article presentation + Lecture activity during the intensive lecture period 15 %

12 Assignments: Individual Assignments: Assignment 1: Lecture diary based on the lectures by Peter Gloor (5 lectures) DL Oct 7th Assignment 2: An article presentation during the lectures (you will receive a doodle link to select the article) Assignment 3 & 4: Introductory social network analysis tasks + presentation during the lectures (intensive lecture period), most presentations on Friday Oct 2 nd (analysis of own box AND a coolhunting project, e.g. Twitter analysis).

13 Lecture / Learning Diary What is it? Lecture/ Learning diary should contain the following: A brief summary of the main points of the lecture Discussion and comparison to earlier material/lectures, own experiences and opinions etc. Reflect: what were the most important things that you learned Purpose: To teach you to find and briefly summarize the most important points presented during the lecture. To teach you to be critical, to compare different sources, and to reflect what you learned. Contents: Write the summary so that also a person who has not attended the lecture can understand it. The purpose is not to write all the lecturer has said, but concentrate only on a few most important themes the lecturer has addressed and aim to discuss them critically. (no bullet point lists) Sources: Indicate your sources: make it clear to the reader what is based on your own experiences and thoughts, what is based on the literature Notes: We suggest you to write notes during the lectures Length: Suitable length approx. 4-6 pages

14 SNA Assignments 3 & 4 Assignment 3: Analyze your own mailbox Assignment 4: Coolhunting project, e.g. Twitter analysis Purpose: Learn basic social network analysis using Condor Understand the results from social network analysis Interpret and draw conclusions from results Deliver: Present the results and your interpretation in PowerPoint / Word format DLs: Short, approx. 10 min presentation during lectures by Peter Gloor (on Friday Oct 2nd)

15 Assignments: Project work Project work done in global virtual teams SNA/ web analysis project, consisting of Group work project Virtual mirror Presentations of the results in virtual meetings Final seminar paper (done as a group) Work amount: 130 hours, 10 h / week (including virtual meetings)

16 Group work in virtual teams ~8-10 project teams of ~5-7 persons Team formation & topic presentations during the first virtual meeting (at least 2 sites, at least 2 persons per site) Preliminary list of group work topics can be found from the couse google site: Group work consists of Online community analysis /SNA task Analysis of your own group s communication (during group work) Progress reports & presentations Final presentation Final paper Evaluating / giving feedback to the other teams
