2 Dear colleagues, I believe we as medical students share a common value of being of service to the community. Therefore, I ask, why not start from NOW? Ghandi once said, Find yourself in the service of others. Volunteering provides a great method for individuals to offer their time and skills for others. Besides the obvious benefits for the person on the receiving end, there are many benefits for the volunteer. These benefits will help achieve a more holistic education to mould great doctors. We are lucky to be living in a country where most of the time human rights are given great importance. However, there are still those minorities which are emarginated from society. I feel it is the purpose of the Standing Committee on Human Rights & Peace to make medical students aware and in touch with the costs of exclusivity and what it is like to be living in these situations. Promoting these values of inclusion and equity is what SCORP is all about. I would like to build on the solid foundations of SCORP established by previous Human Rights and Peace Officers. I would like to see SCORP reaching its full potential and leave a mark on society. Therefore I would like to continue to develop and shape SCORP into a

3 more active standing committee within the MMSA. I would like to change it to a standing committee which makes a difference! My aim for SCORP is to obtain more tangible results. Results where we can see the fruits of our labour. I believe that I can achieve this by a more realistic plan of action as well as one which looks at quality rather than quantity. I want to set up a framework which can be used in SCORP for the years to come. I want to provide a foundation for medical students to appreciate and discover the joy of volunteering to make this a life-long journey of giving. This year I have achieved a great deal of experience within SCORP. Being Amigo coordinator for the term, as well as involved in all the other SCORP events: World Human Rights Day, Discover Malta, SCORP weekend, SCORP at Science in the City, SCORP at TRD, etc. I have also attended GoSCORP in Romania. I have also been involved in other standing committees throughout the year: Healthy Eating Coordinator, attended TNT, as well as very many other events. Therefore I have a sound knowledge as to what this standing committee involves and also where it can be improved upon.

5 Plan of Action Discover Malta TRD Amigo Workshop SCORP Weekend World Human Rights Day Oct Nov Dec Jan May Amigo Campaign 1. SCORP weekend: Sessions on what is SCORP?; Human rights, Minorities in Malta Training session on topics including outreaching Voluntary work will be organised for all the attendees Aim: for students to get a better understanding of what SCORP is all about. 2. Amigo Campaign: I would like to continue to work on the foundations built for this campaign. Communicate with 3-4 NGOs during the summer months to establish a volunteering program. These include working with children, the elderly, and refugees.

6 Volunteering can commence during the summer months Amigo workshop in November to introduce these opportunities to the students, including speeches from previous volunteers who will share their experiences and be an inspiration to the students Amigo volunteering program will commence in November Aim: volunteering in Malta will help build a holistic education to mould great doctors. 3. International Voluntary Opportunities: Provide international voluntary opportunities for medical students, including GoSCORP These will also be introduced during the Amigo workshop 4. World Human Rights Day (Saturday before or after 10 th December): Voluntary work will be organised with different organisations to provide the opportunity for medical students to spend the day volunteering with different minorities Aim: In Malta, human rights are generally greatly respected. However we still have pockets of emarginated groups. Therefore I feel that we will be making better use of our time by volunteering with these minorities rather than outreaching on human rights. 5. Campaigns during the year: Mental Health Awareness campaign: mental health is a topic which is not very much discussed yet it is very important that the public is made aware of this.

7 Share your smile campaign Aim: Quality rather than quantity. I feel there is not much sense in dedicating another day to these events as this will result in too many events throughout the year. These campaigns will be carried out during big MMSA events such as Science in the City, World Diabetes Day, etc. 6. Encouraging active participation within the MMSA: I would like to start off the year with a leisure activity Discover Malta Treasure Hunt Aim: encourage medical students from the get go to be involved in our association as well as integrate the first year and international students.
