3 Summary In 2013 the NHS was 65 years old. Every day the NHS helps people stay healthy, recover from illness and live independent lives. The NHS continues to work for fairness and equality. 3

4 Money to run the NHS is protected, but we still have to find ways of saving money. If the NHS is to keep going for another 65 years it must: Make sure everyone is getting the same good quality care across England. Provide safe, value for money services Prevent rather than treat illness 4

5 Support people with mental illness Stop letting patients down, for example, the abuse cases at Winterbourne View In the future the NHS will have to face some issues: People are living longer, which means illnesses last for longer More people needing more care for longer means more money is needed 5

6 Young people s life style choices To continue to keep the NHS free we will have to change the way we deliver health and care service. To survive the NHS needs to find ways of doing things differently: Using new technologies Putting people in charge of their own health and care 6

7 Matching services to people needs Joining more health and care services to work together All services in health and care are coming together to work alongside patients and the public to improve the way things work. 7

8 We need good ideas to do things differently but: We can t stay as we are, we have to change We can t expect any more money We won t charge for core NHS services Our national Call to Action means talking to everyone about the way the NHS works. 8

9 This means: Neighbourhoods and communities saying what they need from the NHS Individuals and families saying what they need We want to make sure that the NHS works well for people now and in the future. The NHS belongs to all of us. This Call to Action is the opportunity for everyone who uses or works in the NHS to have their say on its future. 9

10 How well is the NHS doing? Over the last few years NHS services have improved so people s health has improved. The quality of services still varies across England. The quality of NHS services in England is measured in 5 areas: 1. Prevent people from dying early Diagnosing people early and giving the right type of treatment can help to prevent people dying early. 10

11 Nearly all deaths from major diseases, for example cancer, are linked to the choices people make in their lives, such as: Drinking too much alcohol Smoking Not exercising enough Not eating healthily 11

12 2. Better quality of life for people with long term conditions Examples of long term conditions are high blood pressure, depression, and dementia. Long term conditions cannot be cured but can be controlled by medication, treatment and / or lifestyle changes. The NHS needs to be better at helping people manage their own conditions. More community based care will mean less hospital visits and lower costs for the NHS. 12

13 3. Helping people to get better after they have been ill More and more people have been using NHS hospital services over the past 10 years. This is because: People are living longer Management of long term conditions isn t working Community services and hospitals aren t working well together 13

14 We need to think of new ideas about how services can work well together. One way to help people is to have more services available 7 days a week. 4. Patient experience Most patients that use the NHS have safe treatments. We want to make the NHS even safer and we want to make it easier to report incidents. 14

15 5. Health inequalities Health inequalities means that people s health isn t always the same across England. In poorer areas people s health can be worse than in richer areas. To make everyone s health better the NHS must work closely with all public health services. 15

16 What will the health and care service face in the future? The NHS has to think about problems it may face in the future. People living longer This means the NHS has to think about how it is going to care for larger numbers of older people. A lot of people that go into hospital are over 65 years old and their treatment is often unplanned. 16

17 They often stay longer in hospital for treatment and are more likely to return. The NHS spends most of its money on older people. Extra Care Housing: helping older people to live on their own Extra Care Housing is social or private housing that has been changed to help people with long term conditions or disabilities. 17

18 This type of housing means older people don t have to move into care homes. Extra care housing helps the NHS save money as older people don t go into hospital as often and have a better quality of life. Changing the way we look after people with long term conditions The NHS spends a lot of money on looking after people with more than one long term condition. This could be changed by people looking after their own care, helped by technology and professionals. 18

19 Helping people to spot the signs of Dementia earlier As people live longer more people will get Dementia. The NHS will have to spend a lot of money treating people with Dementia. Professionals are working on ways to help people spot the signs of Dementia earlier meaning people will be treated quicker. Making choices about your life style when you are young These choices can lead to disease later in life: Drinking too much alcohol Smoking Eating unhealthily Not exercising enough 19

20 Diseases later in life include diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and obesity. Professionals and communities are working together to find ways to help people make the right choices. What people expect from the care they get People expect good care from NHS services and they expect this care to get better. 20

21 People expect care 7 days a week near where they live and work. The NHS needs to rethink where and how services are given. Spending more money on care It is costing more money to give people care. This is because the NHS offers more treatments and these treatments can be more difficult and can use new drugs and technologies. 21

22 Working with a set amount of money Over the next ten years the NHS will have the same amount of money each year to spend on care. The NHS needs to work out how to best spend the money across health and social care. How well the NHS is working The NHS may be not working as well as it could be according to statistics produced. Measuring how well the NHS is working is difficult though. The NHS wants to save money by working better and carry on doing this in the future. 22

23 Looking for opportunities in the future In the future the NHS needs to look for new social and technological ideas. These ideas will help to change the NHS in a good way. A health service, not just an illness service We want to get better at stopping people from becoming ill. We want to do this by working closely with organisations, e.g. Public Health England. 23

24 To help stop people getting ill we also want to spend money on prevention, for example, improving peoples diets, exercising more, and drinking less alcohol. Giving Patients control over their health We want patients to take control of their health. We want patients to do this by managing their own care and treatment. This means patients have better results. 24

25 Working with new technologies Digital technology can give patients better control over their care, for example, booking appointments online. New technology can help the NHS to work better and help people more. Digital inclusion is where all new technologies are accessible to everyone, for example, anyone is able to book an appointment online. The NHS is giving money to places in communities, for example, libraries and community centres to help people with technology and to go online. 25

26 Information and data It is important to collect the right information and data to help patients and care services. It is important to make this information available to everyone. Moving away from a one size fits all model of care Health care is becoming more personal. This means individuals can be tested and treatment can be given for their individual needs. 26

27 The NHS needs to put money in to health care becoming more personal. Growth and the amount of money we have as a country The NHS has a central role in helping to grow the amount of money England has. The NHS must work with partners to makes sure the health and science industry grows. 27

28 What s next? This document looks at problems and chances that the NHS must face in the future. We will work with our partners to look to find new ways of workings and answers to the problems. NHS wants to work with individuals and groups to improve services and give better health and care. We are launching a campaign to make this happen: The NHS belongs to the people: a Call to Action. 28

29 A call to Action The call to action is a work plan to get the views of the public about health and care in England. We will talk to people at events and online. We will collect information that will help us to write a 3-5 year plan. The plan will look at how services can be made better. 29

30 What we want to do is: Talk about changing the NHS so everyone understands what is happening Talk to people about what they think the NHS stand for and how this can carry on Get ideas that help to work out the 3-5 year plan Get ideas that help to create a national plan over 5-10 years 30

31 We want new ideas and will look at a range of ways of making things better. What we won t do is: Do nothing Think that we are going to get more money Take away services or privatise the NHS (Privatise means selling parts of it to companies, instead of it being owned and run by the government) 31

32 How will we talk to people? There will be a few ways that people can give their views: Digitally - which means people can give their views online through a website called NHS Choices Future of the NHS surgeries events in your area to collect your views, organised by the NHS and partners Town Hall meetings events for people who could not attend locally, these will be regional events National events events will be held for partner organisations to give their views 32

33 The NHS is very important. We need to look after it. We also need to change the way it works. We need to make difficult decisions about how it works. By working together we can change the NHS so that it works well in the future. The NHS needs your help. Have your say. This easy read document was produced by CHANGE 33
