De Anza Catalogue Course Description Interaction of the biological, social, cognitive and psychological development across the life span. Enhanced Course Description The purpose of this course is to provide you with an overview of lifespan development from the first few moments of life to the last minutes of death and dying. To do this, the course will focus on human development within the context of specific domains or areas such as cognition, memory, perception, and attachment. How does your thinking change over time? What changes to your body or your vision should you expect as you grow? In this way, you will be learning how an individual develops from birth to death within a specific domain. After completing this course, you will also become familiar with the factors that impact development and the various developmental issues that impact our growth experience. Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes The student will: Recognize the historical and philosophical background of psychology as an interdisciplinary enterprise, with special recognition of gender and cultural issues, including the contributions and perspectives of women and underrepresented groups.
2 2 Identify, explain and apply the major methods used by psychologists to study human behavior. Identify and explain the major age related changes as areas of development including gender roles and stereotypes. Analyze major psychological theories regarding developmental psychology: Freud, Erickson, Piaget, and Kohlberg. Distinguish and explain the major principles and concepts of genetics. Recognize and distinguish the major features of prenatal, infancy and childhood periods of development. Analyze the cognitive, psychosocial and biological development during adolescence. Compare and contrast the cognitive, psychosocial, and physical development of the young adulthood, mid life adulthood, and late adulthood. Textbook: Sigelman, Carol & Rider, Elizabeth (2015). That means that if you are not engaged in the course work you are not completing the course. The material is driven by your effort and motivation, otherwise
5 5 it does not happen. The drop rate in the online course format, as a result, is quite high. Too avoid being dropped you need to stay on schedule, stay motivated. Be advised you should get a head start on the material, as it becomes more challenging as the course proceeds. You should spend hours per week on the material.
