The COURSE ID is hurkmans13247 Attendance This course is 100% online. However, besides reading the textbook, students MUST log onto MyPsychLab every week to view video clips, and take exams online. Those who fail to log onto the website each week, will be viewed as inactive in the class and might be dropped by the instructor. Recommended but not Obligatory Prerequisite: General Psychology -PSYC 1. Also recommended eligibility for EWRT 1A or ESL 5 advised COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is intended to provide a historical overview of abnormal psychology with emphasis on current paradigms and models in psychopathology and therapy including a survey of research methodology; clinical assessment, classification, and diagnosis with special focus on cultural, gender, and age issues in psychopathology and therapy. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World. 9 th ed., Pearson Education, Inc., 2013 Authors: Jeffrey S. Nevid, Spencer A. Rathus, and Beverly Greene. ISBN NEVID ABNORMAL PSYCH + MYPSYCHLAB PKG Note: this ISBN is for the textbook and access to the website MyPsychLab in which the ENTIRE Psy 4 course will occur. The textbook and access code are available through the De Anza College Bookstore and through the publishers website custom built for you: Pick your campus: De Anza College. Pick your course: Psych 4 De Anza Spring Please be careful: DO NOT buy any access code that you find anywhere. It probably will NOT work to get you online with this course and will just cause frustration and waisted money. For help at anytime, please contact Pearson Education

2 FINAL COURSE GRADE: will be based on Taking 15 chapter exams for all the assigned chapters worth 10 points each taken as specified below for a total of 150 points. Psych 4 Term Paper on Cognitive Therapy and a Mental Disorder worth 50 points TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE FOR THE COURSE = 200 These points determine FINAL COURSE GRADE: Psych 4 Term Paper: A = points B = C = D = F = 19 and below and 15 Required Weekly Chapter Exams: (15 exams x 10 points each = 150 points possible) (All you have to do to earn 10 points for each exam is take them ON TIME! and score 70% or above. If you miss an exam, take it late, or score 69% or below, you will receive 0 points for the exam. NO EXCEPTIONS.) GRADE for Psych 4 course: A = total points B = C = D = F = 138 and below Be prepared to spend at least 12 hours per week using and studying course materials. NOTE: If you miss exams your grade will drop. If you do all of the exams, but don t submit a paper, your grade will drop. You must keep up and do all of the work if you hope to earn an A or B in this course.

3 How to Get Started-Watch Your Deadlines! 1. Register for the Psychology 4 course at De Anza College. 2. Complete the Online Orientation through the De Anza College Distant Learning website and submit the Student Information Form by 5:00 pm Friday, April 11. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. Be ready to give your address that you will use ALL quarter. All correspondence with your instructor will happen with that same address, so please keep it the same. Online Orientation found at: 3. Purchase the course text and materials. 4. Register onto the MyPsychLab website by 11:59 pm Monday, April 14 using your access code. This is where the Psy 4 course happens completely ONLINE. The course does NOT happen on Catalyst. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. 5. Start your studies. Read Text Chp.s Students can read the hard copy or the e-text. Please be self-motivated and make sure to read the required chp.s each week. View Videos See instructions on last page of syllabus. On the MyPsychLab website. View each video clip that pertains to the text chp. you are reading. Exams (worth 150 points total) See instructions on last page of syllabus. I will be checking to see that you are taking them each week. You must take the chapter exams on time and earn a 70% or above score in order to earn the 10 points for each exam. If you score anything 69% or below, take an exam late or fail to take an exam, you will lose 10 points per exam. If you take All of the chp. exams on time and earn a 70% or above, you will earn a total of 150 points. NO MAKE-UP exams. No exceptions. As a distant learner you MUST organize your time and keep to the deadlines. Also, once you open an exam, you must take it. You cannot open and close the exams to just look at them. You will not be able to get back on the exam and you will loose those 10 points. NOTE: you may take exams early. You may NOT take exams late. Submit 1 Term Paper via to the Instructor to lindahurkmans@sbcglobal.net If you submit your paper to ANY other address, you will not get credit for your paper. In the subject line of the , please write, for example Megan Nguyen s Psych 4 Term Paper Please simply copy and paste the paper right into the body of the . If you send it in another format, you will not get credit for your paper. All papers should be 5-7 pages, font size of 12, spell-checked, and college level paper. Please cite at least 4 resources that you used on a separate bibliography page. Use your textbook and at least 3 other resources, such as:

4 APPROVED WEBSITES FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS (You do not have to purchase anything from these websites. Just use them for information.) The Term Paper is worth a maximum of 50 points each. Late work will NOT be accepted!! As a distant learner you MUST organize your time and keep to the deadlines. Psych 4 Term Paper DUE: 11:59pm on Friday June 20 (worth a maximum of 50 points): Write an introduction, several paragraphs in the body of the paper, a conclusion paragraph totaling 5-7 pages and a separate bibliography page. Describe these Cognitive Psychologists and the following terms: Aaron Beck, Cognitive Triad of Depression, Albert Ellis, Rational Emotive Therapy. Martin Seligman. Learned Helplessness. Also see chp. 7 page 273 Table 7.5 on Cognitive Distortions and Rational Responses. Think about any Automatic Thoughts you have had in the past or still do have. For example, you may write it like this: Automatic Thought: I just do not have the brains for college. Kind of Cognitive Distortion: Labeling and mislabeling Rational Response: Stop calling yourself names like stupid. I can accomplish a lot more than I give myself credit for. Then write several sentences explaining: What do you say to yourself? What is the type of situation in which you say that to yourself. Which emotions are you feeling when you say that to yourself? What is the Kind of Cognitive Distortion(s) that cognitive therapists would say you are using? Are you aware that you do this? What are some Rational Responses you have learned or can learn now that you are more aware that you may be using some irrational and negative automatic

5 thoughts on yourself? Write as many Cognitive Distortions that apply/have applied to you. Use your text reading, videos, flashcards and any other resources on MyPsychLab to help you explain these terms well. Use your own analytical skills and what you have learned from Cognitive Therapy to examine your cognitive distortions and how you can use more rational responses. Continue your paper with on one of the Mental Disorders of your choosing that you think are effected by Cognitive Distortions. Describe the symptoms, typical onset (do we know from research what age this disorder typically begins?), prognosis (for this given disorder, what are we looking at) and what are effective treatments? How might learning rational responses to the cognitive distortions be helpful for people suffering from this mental disorder? Finish with a conclusion paragraph and separate bibliography page. the Term Paper to lindahurkmans@sbcglobal.net Need help with the Paper If you are having trouble please flag your with questions on the assignment or help needed with the Psy 4 Term Paper or something to that effect. That way I don t just think you are submitting your assignment and fail to respond quickly. Extra Credit No Extra Credit is given in this class. COURSE POLICIES Those discovered to be cheating (unauthorized collaboration, plagiarizing on papers, etc.) will be given an F grade for the course and may be reported to college authorities for expulsion.

6 ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY CLASS SCHEDULE (subject to change) SPRING 2014 Week 1: -Monday: -Register for the Psy 4 course and pay your tuition at De Anza College. -Complete the Online Orientation through the De Anza College Distant Learning website by 5:00 pm Friday, April 11. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. -Buy required textbook and online access to MyPsychLab website. Deadline to register onto the MyPsychLab using your online access code is 11:59 pm Monday, April 14th. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. -Read text chp. 1. NO EXAMS DUE FOR WEEK #1. I will let you get oriented to the website first. NOTE: some weeks will have 1 exam due and some weeks will have 2 exams due. You are responsible for following the schedule. NO LATE EXAMS PERMITTED. Week 2: -Read text chp. 2. -Take Chp. Exam for chp. 1 by 11:59pm on Sunday April 20. I will be checking them. I apologize that the deadline is on Easter, but remember, YOU CAN TAKE ANY EXAM EARLY. BUT YOU MUST TAKE THEM BY THE DEADLINE. IF YOU TAKE THEM LATE, YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS. Week 6: -Read text chp. 8 -Take chp. exam for chp. 8 by 11:59pm on Sunday May 18. I will be checking them. Week 7: -Read text chp. 9, 10 -Take chp. exams for chp.s 9 and 10 by 11:59pm on Sunday May 25. I will be checking them. Week 8: -Read text chp. 11 -Take chp. exam for chp. 11 by 11:59pm on Sunday June 1. I will be checking them. Week 9: -Read text chp. 12, 13 -Take chp. exams for chp.s 12 and 13 by 11:59pm on Sunday June 8. I will be checking them. Week 10: -Read text chp. 14, 15 -Take chp. exam for chp. 14 and 15 by 11:59pm on Sunday June 15. Week 11: -Submit Term Paper by 11:59pm on Friday June 20. No more chp. exams. Week 12: FINALS Week at De Anza College. Your work is done. Final grades will be available via MyPortal on the De Anza College website once posted by faculty. Students, please be responsible for completing your work according to the above dates. My advice to any distant learner is to try not to let the work pile up and then feel overwhelmed. Just take it day by day.
