7 INTRODUCTION Overseas programs are as close to you as a State University of New York (SUNY) campus or web site. The following are some frequently asked questions about study abroad with SUNY. Please take a look before you begin to explore the many study abroad opportunities we offer. If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of the SUNY campuses for additional assistance. Also be sure to visit SUNY s study abroad directory online at: Why study abroad? Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding and exciting experiences in a college student s career. Getting to know another culture, living in a new environment, learning a new language, meeting people: all these add up to a kind of education different from what can be acquired on campus. Equally important for American students is the discovery of their own country its customs, its traditions and values as they come to see it from a foreign vantage point. No wonder that so many returnees from overseas study say that the experience changed their lives. There is indeed ample testimony to the fact that students learn well and mature quickly when studying in a different culture. And as all regions of the world become more interdependent, it is increasingly apparent that the truly educated person is one who has had first hand acquaintance with other cultures, both as preparation for responsible citizenship and, in a more practical way, as a basis for a career. In the words of former Senator J. William Fulbright, author of the Fulbright exchange program, perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into human aspirations. Where are the State University of New York s study abroad programs offered? SUNY currently offers nearly 600 overseas study programs in more than 50 countries: in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Programs range from 2-3 week intensive courses to a semester or academic year abroad. Courses are available in more than 100 subjects, ranging alphabetically from aboriginal studies and aerospace engineering to western philosophy and women s studies. While many programs focus on language learning and are conducted in the language of the host country, many others are conducted wholly or partly in English. Who can study abroad? State University overseas study programs are, with some exceptions, open to all SUNY and non-suny students, with eligibility ranging from first year to graduate level. For many undergraduates, the best time to study abroad has traditionally been during the junior year; however, well-prepared sophomores, and occasionally freshmen, are eligible for some programs. For everyone, careful preparation and consultation with the campus Director of International Education are essential for determining where and when to go. What does it cost? Total expenses are competitive with other highly-rated study abroad programs in public and private universities across the country. Program costs are usually only slightly higher than on-campus costs of tuition, room and board (exclusive of international air fare) and in some countries expenses are actually less than they would be on campus. Study abroad students pay SUNY tuition (in-state or outof-state, depending upon New York State residency) plus costs, which vary from program to program. Matriculated students at a State University of New York campus register on their home campus for programs offered at any other campus. They are thus able to maintain residency and eligibility for financial aid. (NOTE: Upper-division students registering at community colleges for overseas programs should consult with their registrar s office about appropriate credit.) What about financial aid? Most financial aid can be applied to overseas study, with the exception of some program costs and fees. For specific information students should consult the campus financial aid officer and the Director of International Education. 6
8 HOW TO USE THIS BOOK Inside this book, you will find all the information you need to begin your search for the perfect study abroad program. But first you ll need to know how to use the information given what does it all mean? This book is organized into two distinct sections: (1)Semester and Academic Programs, and (2)Short-Term Programs, which includes summer, winter, and intersession programs. Each section is organized alphabetically by country, then divided alphabetically by city and divided again by the name of the program. This makes it easy to find a specific university or city you might be interested in. Once you find a program that interests you, you can use the following features, which give you more detail: Term: This indicates when the program takes place. Exact dates are not given; for specific information, please contact the SUNY campus that administers that program. Program Description: Each program offers unique areas of interest and has distinct characteristics. Use this description to decide if a program meets your basic needs, has the qualities you desire, and offers the academic areas you are interested in. Remember, these are short, concise descriptions and are not meant to be complete. If there is a program that has some of the items you want, but not all, contact the appropriate SUNY campus to find out more about it. Language of Instruction: Many programs have a language requirement; others do not. Please check to make sure you are able to take classes in the language of instruction. Note: There are programs that offer instruction in English even if the native language is not English. We have included a list of these programs later in this introduction. But don t think that if you can t speak a foreign language that you can t enroll in a foreign language program! Some non-english based programs are designed for students who have little or no experience with the language(s) of instruction offered. It is important to recognize that sometimes the best environment in which to pick up or brush up foreign language skills is through immersion! Embrace the challenge, and you will be surprised by the opportunities available to you! Whatever your interests or expectations may be, please take a look at the Eligibility Requirements section to see what the specific language requirements are for each program. Eligibility Requirements: These are requirements set by the SUNY campus that administers each program. At times, these standards depend on requirements given by the foreign institutions. If you have any questions regarding the requirements listed, please contact the appropriate SUNY campus. Credits: Credits are listed as undergraduate or graduate, depending on the level of credits available for a specific program. Unless otherwise indicated, all credits given are for the length of that program. If no graduate credit levels are given, they are not available. We have included a list of programs offering graduate credits later in this introduction. Application Deadlines: Deadlines are given by semester, with the deadline for the fall semester listed first unless otherwise indicated. Where appropriate, we have indicated that late applications will be considered. SUNY Campus: Each program lists the campus you should contact for additional information. If you have any questions at all about any of the programs listed here, please don t hesitate to contact the Office of International Programs at the appropriate SUNY campus using the information listed on the next two pages. They are happy to help in any way possible. 7
