2 programs for Philosophy majors Programs in Europe Ireland National University of Ireland, Galway The picturesque campus is a mere minute walk or ride from the center of Galway. Considered a university city, Galway provides an excellent backdrop for study abroad students. With its bookstores, shops, cafes, and restaurants, Galway offers a treasure trove of history and culture. In fact, it has earned distinction as the Cultural Capital of Ireland. Students can choose from a variety of courses for a summer, semester or academic year. United Kingdom-England Lancaster University Lancaster is in the Northwest of England, 40 minutes from the edge of the Lake District. Centrally located, it takes between one and two hours to get to London, Edinburgh or Manchester. Lancaster University is a campus university surrounded by scenic countryside. Students can choose to study for a semester or academic year, with an optional presession in fall. Coursework is available in a wide variety of disciplines. University College London In the heart of London, UCL occupies a compact area surrounded by academic and professional institutions with parks and museums on its doorstep. UCL has a student population of over 21,000 students, with approximately 7,000 international students. Semester and academic year programs are available. United Kingdom - Scotland University of Edinburgh The University of Edinburgh, with its ancient and modern buildings, its long and storied history, and its lively student atmosphere, is a welcoming atmosphere for study abroad students. Against the backdrop of elegance and striking beauty of the city it calls home, the university hosts a population of over 20,000 students. The city of Edinburgh, considered to be one of Europe s most beautiful cities, boasts attractive public parks intermingled with magnificent historic architecture and world-class cultural attractions. Scattered throughout the city are jutting craggy rocks on one of which sits the ancient Edinburgh castle. Students can choose to a semester or academic year program. University of Stirling Dominated by the famous Stirling Castle, the city of Stirling boasts an attractive blend of modern shopping and leisure facilities and historic architecture. With convenient access to Scotland s railway and bus systems, Glasgow and Edinburgh are within easy travel distance, as are Scotland s major cities and the Scottish Highlands. The beautifully landscaped 310-acre campus is designed around a central loch (lake) and has been described as some of the most beautiful campus scenery in the world. Netherlands Human Rights: Theory and Practice An In- Depth Look at the International Criminal Court in The Hague The primary objective of this six-week, six credit summer course is for students to understand the complexities involved in the ICC s protection and enforcement of human rights. Human rights are somewhat easy to talk about in theory, but in practice, the enforcement of human rights is a very complicated affair. To appreciate the ICC s complex operation, students will not only attend trial proceedings at the ICC in The Hague, but will also learn from professors, lawyers and personnel from the various departments of the ICC. Students will also have access to, and be able to study in the library at the historical Peace Palace, which houses the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the judicial arm of the United Nations. Africa Ghana University of Ghana The University of Ghana is the largest of the four universities in Ghana and currently enrolls 26,000 students. The campus is located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Students may choose from a wide variety of academic disciplines. This is a tuition-exchange program, making it a low-cost option. Students may choose to study at the University of Ghana for a semester or academic year. Volunteer opportunities are available at this site.

3 Asia India University of Hyderabad The first Central University to be established in Southern India, the University of Hyderabad is a premier postgraduate and research university, with over 300 faculty and 3000 students. Hyderabad is the point where Northern and Southern Indian languages meet and where Hindu and Islamic civilizations mingle. Hyderabad s rich tradition in art/poetry, calligraphy, architecture, dance and music is an old regional strength. South Korea Ewha Woman s University Ewha Womans University is situated in the exciting Shinchon area of Seoul, about ten minutes by subway or bus from downtown Seoul, the capital and heart of the Republic of Korea. One discovers what it means to enjoy the beautiful Ewha campus, and the vibrant larger community of both Shinchon and Seoul. Ewha accepts both male and female study abroad students. Semester and academic year programs available. Yonsei University Yonsei University s main campus is ensconced in a spacious, picturesque and natural setting located minutes away from the economic, political, and cultural centers of Seoul s metropolitan area. Yonsei University has a 245 acre campus in the lovely wooded hills of western Seoul, 20 minutes from downtown by bus or subway. Semester and academic year programs available. Oceania Australia University of Wollongong The University is located in the city of Wollongong, an hour s train ride south of Sydney. Wollongong offers many alternatives for shopping, and more energetic outdoor activities. The University of Wollongong has a student population of over 20,000 and offers semester and academic year options. New Zealand University of Otago The University of Otago is New Zealand s first university, established in Otago is one of those rare universities in the world where the main activity of its host city, Dunedin, is education. The campus is just a few blocks from the city center, and students live within walking distance of the campus and key facilities. Otago is renowned for its vibrant campus lifestyle. Students can choose from semester and full year opportunities. ISEP Various Countries CMU is a member of the ISEP consortium, which offers study abroad opportunities in forty countries around the world. Tuition, room and board exchange available for most programs, making ISEP a low-cost program option. Many participating universities offer coursework in English. Complete an Internship for Credit Possible internship locations include: Australia Belize Germany Ghana Ireland New Zealand United Kingdom Students wishing to participate in a for-credit internship will work with Study Abroad Programs in selecting an internship site. Study a Language Speaking a second language can greatly enhance your degree. Students can choose to continue their studies of languages taught at CMU: Arabic Chinese French German Japanese Spanish Students may also choose to enroll in a language course not taught at CMU, while taking other courses in English (e.g. Italian). 4 by year Freshman Participate in a short-term faculty-led or summer program! CMU offers several short-term study abroad programs open to first-year students. Take courses towards general education requirements, electives, exploratory philosophy courses, or study language. It is possible to fulfill the University Program IV-B requirement by studying abroad for a summer. Your first semester at CMU is the ideal time to begin planning for a study abroad experience. Be sure to attend the Study Abroad Fair! Sophomore Participate in a semester study abroad program during the second semester of your sophomore year or participate in a summer or a short-term faculty-led program! Take philosophy courses, electives, study a language abroad, or fulfill the UP IV-B. Attend the Study Abroad Fair! Junior Study abroad for an entire academic year, for a semester, summer or participate in a short-term faculty-led program! Focus on your major or minor requirements, electives, study a language, or complete an internship abroad. Senior Complete your degree requirements, electives, or complete an internship abroad. Build your professional skills through participating in a program relevant to your career goals. We recommend studying abroad a semester prior your last semester at CMU. 5 how can i Afford it? If you want to study abroad but don t think you can afford to - you may be wrong! There are a variety of programs available at different lengths and costs. Studying abroad can be affordable! Some programs offer tuition, room and board for the equivalent cost of studying at CMU. Your Study Abroad advisor will provide you with a budget sheet detailing the costs of your program. There are a number of resources available to help fund your study abroad experience. Financial Aid Financial aid received may be applied to the cost of the program. It is also possible to apply for additional aid based on the program s actual cost (including airfare). Students are also typically able to use the scholarships that they currently receive at CMU. For additional information, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner Hall 202, CMU Study Abroad Scholarships CMU students are invited to apply for a scholarship through the Study Abroad Programs office. Scholarship opportunities are also available through the Philosophy Department and the Honors Program. Please contact the department for more information and application. Gilman Scholarship The Gilman Scholarship is offered by the Institute of International Education. Award recipients can receive up to $5,000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Applicants must receive a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. For more information and application instructions, visit Freeman-ASIA The Freeman-ASIA Award Program is available to American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia. Recipients are awarded up to $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for semester, and $7,000 for an academic year. 6 Follow this easy step-by-step process: 1. Create a Study Abroad Profile what is the process? Go to and select Get Started. You will be able to choose Create a Study Abroad Profile and complete an advising questionnaire so that the study abroad staff can better assist you. 2. Research Programs Online Use Choose Your Program search at the Study Abroad website at to explore the available programs. 3. Stop by the Study Abroad Programs office We invite you to come to the Study Abroad Programs office, located in Ronan 330, to learn more about the programs offered by CMU. You can meet with a peer advisor during the walk-in hours or be able to schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor. 4. Meet with a study abroad advisor Call (989) or visit the Study Abroad Programs office to make an appointment. Your study abroad advisor will help you determine the program that best suits your goals and priorities as well as provide information about the application process, requirements, and finances. 5. Complete your study abroad application Once you have decided on the program your advisor will give you access to the study abroad application. You can then log on to your study abroad online account to start your application. Complete the online application questionnaires, signature documents, and request recommendations. Gather and submit materials to the Study Abroad Programs office by the deadline. 6. Meet with faculty advisors Meet with appropriate faculty advisors to obtain course credit approvals. All courses must be pre-approved to receive CMU credit. Some course credit approvals may be viewed online. 7. Meet with a financial aid advisor Only required for students who wish to apply for financial aid (this includes loans). Call (989) to make an appointment with an advisor in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner Prepare for study abroad Participate in the study abroad pre-departure orientation. Information will be provided to apply for a passport, apply for visa if required, make flight arrangements, check into any health concerns, etc.
