It is designed to assist qualified individuals in assessing their interest in this position.

2 The Opportunity New Jersey City University (NJCU) seeks a new Dean of the School of Business (SoB). The Dean serves as the Chief Academic Officer of the School and works collaboratively with the President, Provost, vice presidents, deans, and staff to further the academic mission of the institution and the success of its students. The faculty are committed to the mission and are outstanding teachers and scholars. Located across the Hudson River from New York City, minutes from Manhattan, Jersey City will soon be the largest city in the state of New Jersey. Long known as Wall Street West, Jersey City is experiencing a renaissance, becoming a major national financial and logistical center as well as home to many new industries and cultural endeavors. The waterfront is a showplace for urban redevelopment and NJCU is an active partner in this exciting undertaking. Since its founding in 1929, NJCU has served as a comprehensive state-affiliated, urban university serving a diverse local population as well as students from around the globe. The University is committed to the improvement of the educational, intellectual, cultural, socioeconomic, and physical environment of the surrounding urban region and beyond. NJCU s student body of over 8500 undergraduate and graduate students take advantage of its 43 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs offered in the School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, and the College of Professional Studies. With an annual operating budget of approximately $200 million, NJCU employs over 250 tenure track faculty and more than 500 adjunct faculty. Washington Monthly ranked NJCU as one of the Top 10 Best Bang for the Buck schools in the northeast, and #2 in New Jersey for serving students in need. U.S. News & World Report ranked NJCU as the best public school in New Jersey for ethnic diversity. NJCU seeks to prepare students for lifelong learning opportunities measured by individual enrichment, partnerships with organizations who employ NJCU students, and renewal of communities in which they interact. The School s mission is to develop people with effective leadership and business skills, a commitment to ethical behavior, development of practical competencies and an understanding of the dynamics of the local and global business environment. NJCU s new Harborside facility is located in the heart of Jersey City s financial district. At Harborside, with impressive faculty and views of the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor, the School offers a wide range of excellent undergraduate and graduate programs. The University is positioning its School of Business to become one of the largest and most impactful business schools in the State of New Jersey. The Dean will have the 2

3 unprecedented opportunity to leverage the Harborside campus into a dynamic business education center for the region. Through collaboration with faculty, the Dean will develop programs and partnerships with the business community and government agencies with the goal of enabling the School, and NJCU as a whole, to fulfill its strategic goals and aspirations. The successful candidate will have a proven record of success in maintaining high academic standards, fundraising, program development, and supporting research in higher education or business, and a demonstrable commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service. The Dean will be a compelling spokesperson for the importance of business education and able to articulate and champion this vital component within the context of the University s core mission. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree or, in rare cases its equivalent, and a record of scholarship, fundraising, teaching, and service to merit appointment as a tenured faculty member in one of the academic departments of the School. The Dean will possess the relationship-building skills to enable the School to fulfill its ambitious strategic goals and aspirations. The Role of the Dean of the School of Business As the chief executive and academic officer of the NJCU SoB, the Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President. The Dean is responsible for leading the SoB in accomplishing its strategic goals, in fostering an entrepreneurial spirit for the School, in building local and global partnerships, and in branding the new SoB as a vibrant leader in the business community of Jersey City and beyond. The Dean has responsibility for building and supporting the faculty, and overall management, programming, fundraising, facilities, budget, student success and enrollment of the school. The Dean will foster an environment that supports the School s faculty, students, staff, and alumni. In particular, the Dean will assure that the School continues to serve its students with excellent academic programs and faculty, experiential learning opportunities, and academic advising of the highest quality and effectiveness. The Dean will promote diversity in all its many forms. In meeting these responsibilities the Dean will work collaboratively with the President, the Provost, faculty, and staff. Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership The new Dean of the NJCU SoB will be asked to address the following critical leadership issues, among others: Enhance academic excellence The next dean of the NJCU SoB will have the opportunity to build the excellence and distinctiveness of the School by focusing on contemporary, relevant, and competitive academic programs that prepare students for career success. The Dean will work with faculty to expand 3

4 experiential opportunities which enhance the classroom experience and assure that students have marketable skills and experiences. A priority will be continuing to internationalizing the curriculum. The dean will build a culture of shared ownership and responsibility, a culture committed to excellence and entrepreneurship and undergirded by assessment and accountability. Managing the budget to achieve the strategic aims of the School will be essential. Engaging with the faculty of the SoB to foster and support excellence in teaching, research, service and outreach will be an important priority. Develop and foster academic and business partnerships and relationships at the local, national and global levels The Dean will actively and enthusiastically build relationships with the local, regional, national, and global business community, industry partners, government agencies, and employers to leverage the School s impact and brand. The School s Harborside location is ideal for outreach, connections and partnerships in Jersey City, Manhattan and beyond. The Dean will leverage this location to build signature programs and create a dynamic business education center for the region. Build a strong brand for the School of Business As the leader of one of the university s flagship initiatives, the new Dean will be the brand ambassador for the SoB. With the $12M harborside facility, the Dean will work to build a strong brand for this signature university program, a brand which reinforces the strategic goals and branding efforts of NJCU. This is a defining moment for the SoB; its presence in the midst of New Jersey s financial capital and proximity to Wall Street positions NJCU to attract top faculty and to give its students a competitive edge for global experiential learning. Take an entrepreneurial approach to diversifying and enhancing resources Developing new revenue streams through programming, partnerships and donor support are critical to the success of the SoB. The Dean will be a visible leader in the Jersey City business community, and will work to build alumni affiliation and support. The Dean is the chief development officer of the School and, along with the faculty and University Development, will be active in fundraising with alumni, as well as private and corporate donors. Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics: Transformative leadership abilities, with a proven record of success, preferably in academia; An inspirational and motivational leader; A collaborative leader who creates a culture of entrepreneurialism and excellence; The ability to think strategically, prioritize goals and solve problems; Ability to work with unions in a collective bargaining framework; 4

5 A commitment to support NJCU s efforts toward diversity through support of minority recruiting of both students and faculty, promotion opportunities, etc.; A strategic appreciation of the forces impacting 21 st century higher education driven by technology, globalization, and demographic change; Fundraising and friendraising abilities and experience; Significant national media experience; Demonstrated excellence in human and financial management; Strong oral and written communication skills; Ability to serve as a brand ambassador and to represent the SoB in the press; Commitment to student success with a preferred record of student recruitment, retention and placement; Demonstrated evidence of teaching, scholarship, and service, a significant amount preferred; Ability to leverage the programming of a strategic new $12M facility; Significant emotional intelligence; The ability to earn the trust and respect of faculty, staff, and students, and to work effectively and efficiently with the President, the Provost, the other deans, and the senior leadership team; Undergraduate degree required; terminal degree preferred. 6 The U.S. Department of State s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced NJCU as one of just two public institutions of higher learning in New Jersey to be recognized as a top producer of U.S. Fulbright students for NJCU is the safest public four-year college /university in New Jersey, based on its 2014 Clery Report. Washington Monthly ranked NJCU as one of the Top 10 Best Bang for the Buck schools in the northeast, and #2 in New Jersey for serving students in need. NJCU was recently ranked 2 nd among New Jersey s four-year nursing programs in America's Best Nursing Schools for the Eastern Region for 2015 by Nurse Journal. NJCU is in the top 20 percent in the nation when compared with all nursing programs in the survey. Tuition and fees remain the lowest of all the public 4-year colleges and universities in New Jersey. U.S. News & World Report ranked NJCU as the best public school in New Jersey for ethnic diversity. Billboard magazine, the world s premier music publication placed NJCU s Music Business program in the top 10 of its list of top U.S. schools at which students can learn about the business of music. NJCU s National Security Studies Program was designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. This past spring, NJCU graduated its first doctoral students with a Doctor of Science in Civil Security Leadership, Management and Policy. 7 Founded in 1929 as a teacher training school, NJCU became a College of choice for returning WWII veterans. From there it developed into a noted liberal arts college. In 1998, it became a university. Today, NJCU is an urban institution of distinction, a place of higher education in a dynamic, ethnically diverse community. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical and applied learning, educating students for a life and work. Offering 43 undergraduate degree major programs, 28 graduate degree and diploma programs, 2 doctoral programs, and 8 graduate certificates, the University is committed to the improvement of the educational, intellectual, cultural, socioeconomic and physical environment of the surrounding urban region, the state and the nation. The NJCU experience is deeply rooted in a rich tradition of diversity, excellence and access. NJCU is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Minority and Hispanic Serving Institution, with a student body which is 35% Hispanic, 21% Black, 9% Asian, 25% White. Over the course of the 85 years since its founding, the University footprint has grown six-fold to its current 72 acres; the number of buildings has expanded from one structure to 25. The current operating budget is close to two hundred million. Plans and discussions with developers for a vibrant housing/classroom/office complex west of the current campus are underway. The academic offerings increased from a normal school curriculum to 43 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs offered by 250 full-time tenure track faculty. Besides the School of Business, the university has three other colleges the William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences, the Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education, and the College of Professional Studies. The School of Business has a growing student body of nearly 1,500 students, and is poised to develop additional majors in Supply Chain, Transportation and Port Management; Business Analytics and Data Science; and Risk Management and Compliance. NJCU is noted for its classical theatre performances and nationally recognized Jazz Studies program. New York area professionals provide instruction in many areas including business, criminal justice, political science and the arts. Adorning the grounds of NJCU s Visual Arts Building is a sculpture by world-renowned artist Maya Lin displaying the word art in 45 languages a stunning assertion that the beautifully-landscaped campus is a global meeting ground where diverse cultures, perspectives, and ideas converge. NJCU s Gothic Knights compete in 12 intercollegiate sports in NCAA Division III athletics as a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). 7

8 School of Business The School of Business seeks to prepare students for lifelong learning opportunities that result in enrichment of the individuals, the organizations that employ them and the communities within which they interact. The mission of the School of Business is to develop individuals with effective leadership and critical thinking skills, discipline-related competencies, and comprehension of the ethics and dynamics of the business environment. NJCU SoB is also has numerous global partners and contacts with top universities in Asia, Europe, South America, as well as elsewhere in North America. The undergraduate curricula provide a strong academic base for continuing education, including professional development, graduate study and long life-long learning. The learning outcomes include the communication and technological behaviors required to function effectively in a multicultural and diverse economic community. The graduate curricula prepare students in decision-making techniques that are critical to navigate in a global economy; and the disciplinerelated skills in accounting, finance, marketing, and management that are needed to compete in a dynamic business environment. New Site of the School of Business, Harborside, Downtown Jersey City The School of Business, at its new Harborside location on the Jersey City waterfront, opened to classes in September Construction of the entire space was completed and the ribbon cutting was in December The total project cost for the capital fit-out was approximately $12 million. The facility includes state-of-the-art classrooms, simulated trading lab replete with Bloomberg terminals, an auditorium, an event space, and a reception area on the first floor. Jersey City, with a population of 254,441 is the second most populous city in New Jersey. Large financial institutions such as UBS, Goldman Sachs, Chase Bank, Citibank and Merrill Lynch occupy prominent buildings on the New Jersey City waterfront, some of which are the tallest buildings in New Jersey. Known as one of the most racially diverse cities in the world, Jersey City boasts such iconic landmarks as the Statue of Liberty National Monument, Ellis Island and Liberty Island and is the site of some of the earliest European settlements in North America. A recent survey also shows the city to have one of the nation s highest percentages of residents who work as artists, leading to its recognition as the tenth most artistic city in the USA. 9

10 Jersey City has recently experienced redeveloped waterfront areas consisting mostly of residential towers, hotels and office buildings. This area of Jersey City has undergone robust growth in concert with the complimentary growth of New Jersey City University.
