1 Employee Spotlight More than Miles Healthy Living Newsletter One hundred miles in six months. That was the charge Missouri Gov. Jay Dixon gave residents of the state last summer. Run, walk, bike, paddle or roll everyone was invited to participate in the Governor s 100 Missouri Miles challenge and two 3Mers received special recognition for their efforts from the governor. Janet and David Day have been married almost 36 years and work opposite shifts at 3M s Commercial Graphics Division in Nevada, Mo. When the governor announced the challenge in June, Janet signed up right way. Over the years, she d exercise here and there, but with a 100- mile goal in mind, Janet adopted a consistent workout routine and began logging her progress. David signed up, too, logging 10 miles a day by riding his bike to and from work. Participants track their progress online, and I kept seeing DD and JD, said Dana Ellis, occupational health nurse at 3M s Nevada plant. They were always in the lead, and I kept thinking who are these two!? Several other employees signed up, too. The governor published each county s monthly top 10 milers, and each month, five of the 10 were always 3M employees. Ultimately, the Day s maintained their top spot for most miles logged in Vernon County, and in November, they were presented with a winners medal and t-shirt from the governor himself. The recognition was special, but the Day s know it s about more than that. I just feel better when I m active, said David. I have more energy. We have five grandkids to keep up with. They just want to play, play, play when they come over, said Janet. We ve got to stay healthy so that we can keep up with them. If you live in Missouri, sign up for the 2014 Governor s 100 Missouri Miles challenge or create a similar challenge with your department or team. If you do, take this advice from Janet: Just start slow and slowly add to your routine. You too, can be a leader! Encourage your colleagues and families to get started on their own path to better health. 2 Featured News Talking With Your Kids about Social Media Social media is a powerful influence in our culture. It impacts adults, young people and children on a daily basis. The average school-age child has hundreds of friends on Facebook and sends dozens, if not hundreds of texts each day. Social media has allowed families to communicate more easily and share meaningful events; however, social media can have a dark side. The relentless barrage of social media can leave us feeling overloaded and overwhelmed, and the constant exposure of children to social media causes concerns for many parents. So, how can parents help their kids find balance in their use of social media and networks? Here are some ideas: Pay attention to how much time your kids spend on social media and consider whether their schedules reflect a balance between screen time and other activities. Are they spending so much time texting or posting on Facebook that they re missing out on more beneficial activities? Think about the effect that your child s current level of social media use is having on them emotionally and relationally. Is their tweeting or posting enhancing their relationships or serving as a substitute for healthy face-to-face interaction? Talk with your kids about the pros and cons of social media and give them some guidance on how to use it wisely, particularly on how to handle the bullying that can happen. Don t be afraid to set some reasonable boundaries on your kids social media usage. They may not like these boundaries, but they will be secretly reassured that you love them and want to protect them. Finally, give some thought to the place that social media plays in the life of your family in general. If kids see their parents constantly engrossed in texting or messaging it may send the wrong message. Take the lead in organizing healthy family activities and in establishing electronic-free time. For assistance with managing stress effectively and building healthy relationships, contact the 3M Employee Assistance Program (EAP) professional serving your 3M location; at 3M Center, call (Triminet or 651) ) or call the 3M EAP at (877) (toll free). 3M EAP is one of 3M s Healthy Living resources. 3 Featured News Safe in the Sun Did you know ultraviolet (UV) light is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.? It s important to limit your exposure to UV light. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun s rays are very strong. Always play it safe and limit your exposure. In addition to seeking shade and limiting your exposure during peak hours, you should also apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Sunscreen should also be reapplied at least every two hours and more frequently if you are swimming or sweating. Additional clothing and wide-brimmed hats also protect your skin. Check the UV index in your area for a forecast of the expected risk of overexposure to UV radiation from the sun. This index can be a helpful tool for planning outdoor activities and may also include recommendations for sun protection. You can find the UV index for your area by looking at a local newspaper, online forecast or on the Environmental Protection Agency website at html. (Sources: American Cancer Society and Environmental Protection Agency) Remember that children need special attention when it comes to sun safety. They are typically out in the sun more often, are unaware of the dangers and usually burn a lot easier. Follow the steps outlined above. Plus, remember to cover them up as much as possible and, if near water, snow or sand, use extra caution.

5 Information Bits Quick Quiz Select an answer to take part in the poll and see how your answer stacks up with your peers. True or False? If I m wearing sunscreen, I can stay in the sun as long as I want. True False [Answer: False. It s not smart to broil in the sun for several hours, even if you are wearing sunscreen. These products don t provide total protection from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Limit your time in the sun, especially at midday.] (Source: American Cancer Society) Fitness Fact Exercising in the Heat of Summer Heat-related illnesses are largely preventable. By taking some basic precautions, your exercise routine doesn t have to be sidelined when the heat is on. Get acclimated to outside heat. As your body adapts to the heat over the course of one to two weeks, gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts. Most importantly, drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is a key factor in heat illness. Don t wait until you re thirsty to drink. Make sure you are also dressing appropriately by wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help sweat evaporate and keep you cooler. Finally, wear sunscreen. Sunburn decreases your body s ability to cool itself. If you have any other questions about exercising in the heat, stop by the onsite 3M Fitness Centers and speak with a health fitness professional.
