2 Welcome to the Hoo s wellness program The University of Virginia cares about your good health. When you re healthy, you have the energy and focus to do your best work. You can reach for and achieve career and personal goals. We want to help you get healthy and stay healthy. That s why we ve invested in wellness programs that help you know more about the state of your health and how to improve it. The UVa Health Plan s Hoo s wellness program takes a whole-person approach, providing services, information and personalized coaching that supports better health and well-being through every stage of life. All academic and Medical Center employees and their spouses who are enrolled in the University of Virginia Health Plan (UVa Health Plan) can participate in the wellness program. 2

3 Assess your state of health annually. Participate in on-grounds biometric screenings or make an appointment to see your doctor. Announcing the Hoo s Portal All wellness program information is now conveniently located in one place: > To log in the first time, you ll need your UVa Health Plan/Aetna member ID card. User name and password instructions are on the Portal. > Agree to the End User License Agreement. > Complete your profile page. Click Save & Continue. Take the health assessment, learn about your risks and take steps to a healthier you. The health assessment is part of Aetna s secure online guide to health and wellness. Questions cover topics such as health history, lifestyle and habits. Access the health assessment and your results: > Go to the Hoo s Portal. Find the Aetna icon. > Log in to Aetna Navigator. If you re not registered, choose the Register now link. > Look for the link to Take a Health Assessment. > Complete or create a new assessment and print your completion certificate. > View My Health Reports or My Health Assessment Summary to learn your risks, conditions and strategies for success. Click Continue at the bottom of each page to view the entire report. Use your results to help you determine what actions you can take to improve your health. > If you experience problems completing the assessment or printing your certificate, contact Aetna at Identify available opportunities to maintain or improve your health: Go to the Hoo s Portal. > Find the Hoo s icon. View the calendar and descriptions of the Hoo s programming. Register for seminars, classes and consultations that will help you maintain or improve your health. > Find the Aetna icon to access online wellness programs. Choose Health Programs. Look for the link Simple Steps To A Healthier Life. Click on Go to My HealthMedia Programs. Aetna Online Wellness Programs include: Balance, for a healthier weight and healthier body. Nourish, to get you in the habit of eating healthy. Relax, for ways to manage everyday stress. Breathe, for support to help you quit smoking. Overcoming Depression, to help you gain control over depression. Overcoming Insomnia, for a better night s sleep without medication. 3

4 UVa wellness programming Wellness Programs on-grounds The University of Virginia wellness programs on-grounds are usually offered at no cost to you by our internal partners. Visit the Hoo s Portal and find the Hoo s icon for a current calendar and descriptions of scheduled events. Faculty and Employee Assistance Program (FEAP): FEAP provides free, confidential assessment, brief counseling, problem solving and referral services for employees and their families. Employees may contact FEAP at FEAP is also available for after-hours emergencies. Call and ask for the FEAP counselor on-call. Hoo s programming includes worklife seminars and substance abuse consultations. Visit for a list of available seminars. Call or to register. Intramural-Recreational Sports (IM-Rec Sports): IM-Rec Sports is committed to the health of students and employees. They work with individuals of varied fitness levels and interests to support a stronger, healthier lifestyle. Hoo s programming includes exercise classes and fitness consultations. Go to or call to receive an updated catalog of offerings and learn how to register. 4

5 UVa Nutrition Counseling Center: UVa Nutrition Counseling offers individual nutrition appointments as well as group classes including EBT (Emotional Brain Training). Coaching-oriented nutrition therapy is available for obesity, prediabetes, diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Hoo s programming includes EBT classes and nutrition consultations. Visit for more information. Schedule a Hoo s nutrition consultation by linking to the website above, selecting How to Make An Appointment and choosing your best day and time at UVA Northridge. This one-time consultation is 50 minutes in length. UVA-WorkMed: UVA-WorkMed is a comprehensive occupational health and employee wellness program within the UVa Health System. The program offers a variety of wellness activities and classes provided at the worksite. Hoo s programming includes biometric screenings, nutrition courses and exercise activities. Call or visit for current program offerings and information on registration. UHR Employee Development: Personal Enrichment courses and programs make the employment experience successful and rewarding by focusing on the individual s development. Hoo s programming includes stress management and conversations on elder caregiving. For current offerings, visit or call to register. Career Services offers workshops that help develop personal and social networks, and teach career development and revitalization strategies. Hoo s programming includes Rejuvenate and Revitalize retreats, stretching into your career with Nia and Yoga, and Career Walk/Talk. For current offerings, visit or call to register. 5

6 UVa wellness programming Other Wellness Programs Other wellness programs are offered online, telephonically and at various locations for Hoo s These programs are usually offered at no cost to you, except for the Weight Watchers program. Hoo s Fit Walking Program: Join to set personal walking goals based on your current level of fitness and health. The program can be started at any time. Go to the Hoo s Portal and find the Hoo s Fit icon. Log your steps or map out your favorite walking trail. In addition, earn steps for all other activities, including swimming, house cleaning and biking using the conversion tool. Receive a pedometer when you sign up. Complete 12 weeks of walking and earn a Hoo s Fit Walking T-shirt. Quit For Life Tobacco Cessation Program: UVa offers a proven path to becoming nicotine free. Program features include telephonic coaching calls, post-cessation continued access to Quit Coaches for telephonic support, a personalized quit plan, help selecting a tobacco-cessation support medication (delivered free to your home) and educational materials. To enroll in the Quit For Life program, call 866-QUIT-4-LIFE ( ) or visit Adult dependents and retirees enrolled in the UVa Health Plan are also eligible to enroll in this program. This week I broke a weight barrier that I haven t been able to break for over a year. Thanks for the incentive! 6

7 Weight Watchers : A choice of weight-loss solutions geared to your lifestyle and personal preferences is available, including local meetings, At Work meetings and online subscriptions. There is a cost for this program. Visit the Hoo s Portal and find the Hoo s icon for more information, including special reduced rates and registration instructions. Receive these reduced rates by enrolling at Use Employer ID and Employer Passcode WW Contact the Weight Watchers Wellness hotline at if you experience enrollment problems. Group Challenges: Create team spirit and achieve wellness goals at the same time. Joining a team challenge provides accountability while having fun! Group challenges run throughout the year using the Hoo s Portal, and have various themes and activities. Go to the Hoo s Portal and find the Wahoo Challenge icon. 7

10 Aetna programming Aetna Wellness Programs Aetna offers programs you can access over the telephone or by mail at no additional cost to you. Beginning Right Maternity Program: This program offers a pregnancy risk survey; educational materials on topics such as prenatal care, labor and delivery, and breastfeeding; plus health coaching provided by obstetrically trained registered nurses who can help with special health concerns. There s also a personalized smoking-cessation program called Smoke-Free Moms-to-Be. When you enroll and take the pregnancy risk survey by your 16th week of pregnancy, you won t have to pay a copay or deductible for your newborn, depending on the medical plan in which you are enrolled. > Members enrolled in the High Premium Program will have their newborn per confinement copay waived. > Members enrolled in the Low Premium Program will have their newborn inpatient confinement deductible waived for both facility and doctor charges. If you or a covered spouse are eligible for Beginning Right, call 800.CRADLE.1 ( ) for more details or to enroll. 10

11 Aetna Health Connections SM Disease Management Program: This program provides one-on-one support, information and advice from trained disease management nurses for over 30 chronic conditions, including diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis, heart disease and more. Aetna disease management nurses understand your benefits program and are there to support you and your needs. They will act as your personal health coach and can help you define and reach your own health and wellness goals. You choose why, when or how often to speak with them. The Disease Management Program does not compete with your doctor. It s about helping you better understand and follow your doctor s advice and treatment plan. An Aetna nurse may call if you could benefit from this program. But, you don t have to wait. Call Aetna at anytime to get started. Remember, any information you share with the Aetna nurse is kept confidential and secure. It is not shared with anyone. When an Aetna nurse is on the line, be sure to take the call. An Aetna nurse may call to: > Discuss long-term health needs for a medical condition > Share additional health information about your condition > Help you coordinate or manage complex care or a chronic health condition, such as asthma or diabetes Your Health Information is Private! All information obtained from or provided by you as a result of your participation in the Hoo s program is kept private and secure, and is not shared with the University of Virginia.
