Energy Management Services for the City Authorities: The ESCOCITY Web Portal V. Marinakis, A. Papadopoulou, G. Anastasopoulos, H. Doukas, J. Psarras Decision Support Systems Lab EPU -NTUA
Outline Introduction Smart Cities & Market Available Solutions Third Party Financing ESCOCITY Web Portal ESCOCITY Energy Assessment Framework Green Buildings Green Pillars/Pole Green Electric Vehicles ESCOCITY User Interface
Introduction EU Climate and Energy Package has set very ambitious targets for sustainable development ( ). Major challenge cities. Increasing energy demand patterns of Cities are expected to play a key role in the implementation of Europe 2020 targets. Advanced technologies are used to transform cities to Smart Cities.
Smart Cities The term Smart City is used to describe ICT solutions for cities and to highlight ICT importance and potential in helping the city to develop competitive advantages 1. City changes include: smart transportation; smart environment; smart healthcare; smart energy; smart education; smart safety etc. 1 Kramers A. et. al, 2014
Market Available Solutions Green Buildings Solutions available from private or public initiatives. Specialization in one sector each. No solution integrating the pillars section. esightenergy DEXCell Energy Manager 5Twenty ENERGINET Intelen Green Pillars - Green Poles InteliLight Street Light Vision Green Cars Watt Station Connect
Third Party Financing (1/6) The idea behind energy services is by no means new. The concept of energy contracting dates back hundreds of years. "We will leave a steam engine free of charge to you. We will install these and will take over the customer service for five years. We guarantee you that the coal for the machine costs less, than you must spend at present at fodder (energy) on the horses, which do the same work. And everything that we require of you, is that you give us a third of the money, which you save. [James Watt, ]
Third Party Financing (2/6) Energy Performance Contracting Energy Service Company ESCO End User Funding: Energy Service Company ESCO; Financial Institutions; End User. RES/RUE projects TPF Number of ESCOs 0 5 Backer (Bank, Leasing etc.) ESCO Equipment Supplier > 50
Third Party Financing (3/6) Customer s Profit Energy Bills Guaranteed Savings ESCO s Profit Investment Repayment Customer s Profit Energy Bills Energy Bills Before During the project After Project Start Contract Signature
Third Party Financing (4/6) Shared Savings Customer Contract Services Payment ESCO Credit & Performance Gamble Higher funding cost for the customer. Higher gamble for the ESCO. Funding Payment Contract First out contracts: Savings are collected in total from the ESCO, until total repayment of its costs. Financial Institution
Third Party Financing (5/6) Guaranteed Savings Customer Contract Services Payment ESCO Performance Gamble Funding Payment Financial Institution Credit Gamble Contract Customer gets higher financial performance with higher risk. Many ESCOs with different services.
Third Party Financing (6/6) Typical Steps for Energy Management in Smart Cities: Metering energy consumption and collect data. Finding opportunities to save energy and estimating how much energy each opportunity could save. Taking action to target the opportunities to save energy. Tracking Progress by analyzing metered data. Lord Kelvin : "If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it"
ESCO Smart City Energy Plan ESCOCITY web porta l integrates advanced ICT technologies in a single electronic web - b a sed platfo rm b a sed on respective sta te-of- th e a rt methodologies a n d techniques.
ESCOCITY Hellenic Republic - Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs - General Secretariat for Research and Technology - Special Service for Management and Action Implementation on the fields of Research, Technological Development and Innovation Partners: JEPA LTD (Coordinator), NTUA (Scientific Responsible), STIRIXIS, ASG, MILTEL
ESCOCITY Web Portal (1/3) Open platform that collects various data from sensors and endpoints
ESCOCITY Web Portal (2/3) Green Buildings (public buildings, schools, etc.); Green Pillars/Pole (Surge protection, voltage optimization solutions, street lighting power monitoring, etc.); Green Electric Vehicle (EV) Station Support.
ESCOCITY Web Portal (3/3) Mayor and advisors Municipal technical services Municipal accounting services Municipal Employees Citizens/Public users Fullaccess to the profile, although not very detailed data are expected to be included. Users have fullaccess to the data monitored, in all forms (diagrams, databases etc). Users with access to a profile that includes the monetary depiction of the energy consumptions. Users with limited access to the Web Portal, able to access a more detailed level of information on the municipal consumptions. Users without specific access to the Web Portal, able only to access the public profile. Overview of the target groups and their main characteristics
ESCOCITY Energy Assessment Framework The Energy Assessment Framework (EAF) will assess the city s energy behavior and management before and after the ESCOCITY s implementation. Monitoring of Energy Consumption and CO 2 Emissions Stakeholders, Energy Infrastructures & Sources Strategy and General Context ICT & Smart Grids 4 main levels of assessment
Green Buildings (1/2) Green Buildings Tool collects, analyzes and presents data amongst four major groups of indicators concerning the buildings energy management.
Green Buildings (2/2) Examples of functionalities for building monitoring: Total (final) energy & water consumption. Energy consumption per energy source/per use/per floor area. Electrical power (kw) and electrical power factors (cosφ). Electricity generated by Renewable Energy Sources. CO 2 emissions (total / per floor area). Costs of energy and fuel. Comparison between buildings in the Municipality.
Green Pillars/Pole (1/2) Green Pillars/Pole Tool focuses on the street and road lighting control, by the following: voltage control supplied to the lighting circuit; operating lights efficiently by user defined time schedules; collecting data on street lighting, analyzing the lamps failures and reports crucial data for the user.
Green Pillars/Pole (2/2) Examples of functionalities for pillars/pole monitoring: Electrical Consumption (total / per line / per lamp etc.). Percentage ratio of operating lamps out of total. Comparison between different lines. CO 2 emissions for electricity (total / per line length). Electricity production from RES. Electricity cost analysis per line.
Green Electric Vehicle (1/2) Green EV Station Support Tool processes data for EV charging stations, namely those parking spaces where EV supply equipment will be used to charge vehicles. Collection of important data regarding the charging stations energy management.
Green Electric Vehicle (2/2) Examples of functionalities for Electric Vehicles monitoring: Electricity usage (per user / per EV / per type of EV). CO 2 emissions for electricity (per EV station / per user). Average electricity cost per user / point of charge. Potential projection of electricity cost through correlation with expected users. Comparison between different stations.
ESCOCITY User Interface (1/3) Modular environment for easy combination of functionalities. Presentation of static and dynamic data. Data output in different formats and time intervals. Provision of future energy consumption.
ESCOCITY User Interface (2/3) Pilot Sites Moschatou Τavrou Nikaias
