2 Charitable Organizations If your club is a 501(c)3 organization, you have the ability (not the right, but the privilege) of fundraising Gifts to a charitable organization are considered tax deductible for individuals There are 24 different types of 501 organizations If your club is a 501(c)4 or (c)7, the IRS does not allow charitable gifts 4 Fundraising Fundamentals 1. Nonprofit organizations are not entitled to support; they must earn it 2. Successful fundraising is not magic 3. Fundraising is not only raising money; it is raising friends/supporters 4. People do not give if they aren t asked 5. Figure out what makes you special within the community 5 The Fundraising Process/Plan 1. Determine needs/what is missing 2. Determine fundraising goals 3. Identify potential programs 4. Seek out information about program/product 5. Select fundraiser chairperson who s in charge? 6. Maximize your volunteer pool 7. Create timeline 8. Run fundraiser 9. Monitor results, send acknowledgement letter, recognize volunteers, was it worth it? 6 2

3 Board s Role in Fundraising 1. Approve the budget to support the plan 2. Clearly define annual fundraising goal 3. Create donor recognition policies (thank you) 4. Ensure fundraising methods adhere to ethical standards IRS regulations 5. Commit and actively participate be an ambassador and share your passion wherever you go 6. Monitor progress and evaluate outcome 7 Responsible Fundraising Ask - Does the fundraising plan being proposed benefit the club as a whole or benefit only certain individuals? Individuals cannot directly benefit from the money they raise nor receive credit for ice or other costs in exchange. 8 The Strategy of Fundraising Develop a compelling case statement: Create urgency Begin with your club s mission statement Include facts about club (history, accomplishments, number of members, value of skating, cost of participation, etc.) Make the case for how this money will impact your club and its members 9 3

4 Make Your Case What: What need does the club fulfill? How: How is the club filling this need? Who: Who is the club its leadership, its record, its mission? Why: Why should a donor contribute? Create your elevator speech: Put several sentences together Time is limited to seconds Practice this speech so it s natural and rolls off your tongue Prepare for the Ask 10 Ladder of Asking Effectiveness 1. Solicitation was infrequent or ineffective Information was lacking about difference gift made Never felt wanted or needed Organization did not include them in plans No direct or personalized appeal No one asked them to give again or to consider giving more A previous gift was not acknowledged 13 Donor Recognition Thank You Say thank you in visible and creative ways Let them know the difference they made Maintain a relationship keep them connected: Thank you letters Donor recognition at rink Invitation to special club events Send updates and recent process reports from the club and skaters 14 Fundraising Requirement Best practice As a condition of membership, everyone must raise $200 in addition to paying their dues. We have four different fundraisers in which you can earn the $200 OR you may opt out and write a check to cover your fundraising requirement. If you earn more than $200, it goes into the club general fund. All monies will be distributed at board discretion. 15 5

6 This Really Works!! 16 FFDIA is home to Kids On Ice, a community ice skating program for children ages 5 to 18 years old, offering free lessons with all necessary equipment provided. The program serves over 3,500 children annually. 7 Consider Multiple Approaches Segment your donor database Keep messaging clear, concise, and consistent. Think about timing, especially with online posts when are people checking /social media? When do our most successful communications reach people? Offer a Call to Action- Simple and Specific Donate Now! Help us by forwarding the , sharing on Facebook/Twitter, etc. Share a story about what skating means to you. Tie Fundraising to Outcomes and Results Answering the donor question: what does my donation mean to you? $50 - Sponsors a child in the next 8 week Basic Skills session $100 - Sponsors a child in Kids On Ice PLUS for 8 weeks $250 - Supports two children for an entire year of Basic Skills lessons $500 - Introduces a brand new class of 30 students to our program $ Funds 4 sessions for 30 students during the school year Greater Grand Rapids FSC Annual Fundraisers Car Washes Bottle/Can drives for deposit return. Restaurant fundraisers Noodles and Co, Quaker Steak and Lube etc General sales (Pizza Kits, scrip, club wear, candy bars, candles, Avon, Wreaths etc ) Vendor Party at the Rink - Pampered Chef, Miche Bags, 31 Bags, Premier Jewelry Community events- 50/50 raffles at sporting venue, coupon book sales for community day at department store (Younkers) Selling Tickets for lour local professional Hockey team and skating at the intermission (we receive a portion of ticket sales Ice Shows Skating Marrowthon Also benefits Be the Match Registry. 8 GGRFSC Most Profitable Fundraisers Ice Shows Holiday, Spring, for any reason Skating for a Cause- i.e., Skating Marrowthon Competitions Local, Regional, Sectional and National Wing Night What is it? Easy 2- hour event Potential $1,500 - $6,000 profit Club or Team Fundraiser Items for Success: Friendly bar/restaurant $15 - $20 per person All the food and beer you can eat and drink in two hours (soft drinks too) Gift Baskets Great D.J. or Band Wing Night 1. Fun Bar Fun local bar with seating for Provides pizza, chicken wings and beer Provides the food at or near cost DJ or will have a band the night of your event. 2. The Kroger Community Rewards Program was designed to make your fundraising the easiest in town by simply using your Kroger Plus Card. go to Community 25 Skate-A-Thon Basics Participants secure pledges from family, friends, neighbors, and local businesses for the amount of laps skated during a specific time period. Only proficient skaters should participate (Basic Skills, club, hockey, speed) Each skater will have a set amount of time (i.e.- hour and a half) to skate as many laps around the ice as they can Maximum 100 laps (11 laps around NHL size rink is equal to a mile). Must bring an official counter with them to track the number of laps skated After Skate-A-Thon, the participants collect money from pledges within a two week period 26 Skate-A-Thon Sample Pledge Sheet 27 9
