The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. - Alfred Austin

Horticulture

Your dream? Grow it Imagine a career free of grey walls, fluorescent lighting, jamming photocopiers and overload. In your new life, you work outdoors. You dig, you plant, you water. You nurture. Nature responds. Your achievements grow day-by-day in a happy riot of colour and gentle fragrances. You create beautiful, peaceful places in a busy world. Maybe you ll design fresh green spaces in tired urban settings. Vertical gardens, rooftop gardens, courtyard gardens. You ll use your new skills to create inspiring new landscapes in unexpected places. The people who use these spaces silently thank you, without ever knowing who you are. On a different pathway, you ll use your healings hands and practical skills to offer the best in tree care and maintenance. Out and about in your community each day, you re climbing trees, performing aerial rescues and removing dangerous branches. Maybe you like to keep your feet on the ground. You are creative. As a florist, you ll use your natural flair for colour and design to create fabulous arrangements, bringing new life and heavenly scents to any special occasion. Imagine Plant the seeds of your success today! 6A blossoming industry Over the next five years, revenue from the gardening industry is expected to grow at 2.7% per annum, increasing to $738.9 million in The ageing population, a general rise in residential construction activities and the continued outsourcing of gardening services by businesses and government organisations will contribute to this growth. 20 Want to do more? Imagine you are entrusted with expanding the client base for your family s drainage business. What you do today will ensure that the trust your family name has in the community can continue, not just for tomorrow, but well into your children s future. You may be a fifth generation plumber and you understand the importance of talking the talk and building relationships but you are looking to the future for inspiration. You know that by providing a vision for sustainable practice you will secure your client base. It is no longer enough to be able to redirect the grey water. The industry area may vary but the intent of your initiatives is what is important. You may be responsible for the waste minimisation strategies of a childcare facility to achieve a greater compliance rating. You could be working as a cabinet maker to ensure that the designs you are working on today will contribute to a sustainable tomorrow. You may be working with new methods of thermal performance testing, ensuring that your established electrical surveying company can ensure that installed grids are within acceptable levels. You may be a motor mechanic looking at the impact of the hybrid car market and developing solutions to drive these initiatives further. Whatever your role, you may find yourself responsible for writing and implementing your sustainability policies and you jump at the challenge. Imagine Get ready for tomorrow A sustainable industry 8 (Source: IBIS World eport 2011/12 Environmental Science Services) The new carbon tax, rising energy prices and an increase in sustainability reporting has led to the emergence of private sustainability consultancies which provide footprint assessments and monitoring. This trend is likely to gather momentum, as the financial penalties for heavy polluters increase and sustainability reporting becomes mandatory for both business and home owners in Australia. 57% of business and industry leaders already give preference to suppliers who have a good sustainability record and 80% agree it is likely that they will require suppliers to meet sustainability standards in the future. 73% of business and industry leaders would like to see their organisation start sustainability reporting and 47% believe that in five years time the majority of businesses will be producing sustainability reports. Over 95 % of leaders and employees said committing to sustainability yields benefits for organisations. (Survey results from People. Productivity. Planet., 2010 Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne with Beaton and WellmarkPerspect)

A sustainable reputation That s GOLD! Sustainability ensures the environmental, economic and social outcomes are met without limiting the resources for future generations. At the Northern Sydney Institute, environmental sustainability is a way of thinking and doing that is embedded in every aspect of the Institute s operations. As an educational provider, we are committed to enabling others to do the same not just to meet basic standards or mandatory requirements but to reach a stage where all business decisions are approached through the lens of sustainability. The Institute focused on its own operations to meet ISO Environmental Management Systems standards and now provides advice and training in environmental auditing to other TAFE NSW institutes and universities. A pioneer of conservation and land management programs since the 1970s, the Northern Sydney Institute continues to provide training to meet the challenges of today s burgeoning green economy. Each year, over 3,000 students are trained in the specific fields of land, environmental and coastal management, and this is growing in response to the increasing demand for greenskilled workers. The Northern Sydney Industry is unique in offering over 2,000 dedicated sustainability and greenskills units to our students equipping our graduates from all areas be it childcare, plumbing or accounting a competitive edge to enter today s low carbon economy. We are introducing new environmentally based courses and modules across all industry sectors, covering subjects such as renewable energy; dual grid installation; insulation training; energy, water and waste minimisation; green plumbing; automotive gas refitting; and ecologically sustainable building design and construction. Concerns about climate change and the future of the environment are changing the way many traditional trades are taught. Building, electrical, plumbing, architecture and landscaping students learn about sustainability by designing and building sustainable classrooms, which in turn are used by students learning about sustainability. Hospitality students apply sustainable work practices, working towards the closed-loop farm to table to farm approach and Green Table certification using the latest in waste, water and energy minimisation equipment and techniques. Let our sustainability advantage become yours. Smart and sustainable The Northern Sydney Institute s commitment to sustainability has been recognised with the following awards and certifications: 2012 Sustainability Advantage Gold Partner with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage 2012 Winner Green Gowns Awards Australasia (Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability) ISO for Environmental Management Systems (We are the only TAFE institute nationally to achieve and maintain this international standard) 2009 winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful Environmental Education Award for the Green with ENVe program developed in partnership with Warringah Council 2009 winner of the inaugural 2009 Australian Training Awards for Skills for Sustainability Educational Institution Award (this is a national award open to all educational institutions in Australia) membership of Sydney Water s Every Drop Counts program the Hornsby College Environment Improvement Group won a 2009 Sydney Water Every Drop Counts Team Award in recognition of their impressive achievement of reducing water usage by almost 50%. Our aim is that every Northern Sydney Institute graduate will be competent in environmental management and practices in their field, regardless of what that field is Kevin Harris, Director, The Northern Sydney Institute

Course Efficiencies As we move to a low carbon, sustainable economy, the need for sustainability professionals is growing rapidly. Companies from small operations to large multi-nationals need the skill of people who can direct and lead their organisations to a strong and sustainable future. The introduction of the carbon price and new legislation around mandatory reporting of building efficiencies will mean that business and home owners will need to rely on the skills of professionally trained sustainability experts and assessors for reporting, advice and strategic implementation. To meet this new workforce demand, the Northern Sydney Institute is offering fast track pathways to nationally recognised qualifications in business and home sustainability assessment and a new diploma level professional qualification in sustainability. Fast track Diploma of Sustainability The Northern Sydney Institute is offering this new diploma as a fast track pathway for applicants who have completed or are currently enrolled in a diploma or higher qualification. This nationally recognised course provides you with the skills and techniques to develop and apply a sustainable approach to your business or organisation. You will understand how you and your company can apply sustainable principles to production and consumption. Learn how to develop a business case and support behavioral change that engages people in sustainable work practice. Graduates of this course are increasingly sought after by employers who want to succeed through business efficiency and innovation. Duration: One semester (18 weeks) comprising nine weeks of face-to face contact on campus (one day a week). The remaining nine weeks are available for self-paced learning with online support. Sustainability Assessment Certificate IV Business and/or Home Sustainability The Northern Sydney Institute has developed a customised training program which allows participants to gain Certificate IV qualifications in both business and home sustainability assessment in much less time than undertaking the two separate qualifications. These courses give you the skills and knowledge to undertake sustainability assessments for home or business owners and provide professional reporting and advice on how to reduce environmental impacts by improving efficiencies in energy and water use, waste management and thermal performance. Duration: Fifteen weeks for the first Certificate IV plus ten weeks online training with three face-to-face workshops to gain the second qualification. (If you already hold a Certificate IV level qualification in either business or home sustainability assessment, you can undertake just the ten week online training component to gain the second qualification).
