1 FINANCIAL ADVISER FOR A DAY COMPETITION In partnership with Morgan Stanley, Ms. Kenney s Semester I and Semester II Economics Honors and Financial Literacy courses at BDCHS will compete for a chance to be a Financial Adviser for a day. Students will get the chance to spend an entire day shadowing 10 different financial advisers as well as 5 assistants/interns at the New Tampa office. The Morgan Stanley representatives are excited to answer questions and offer support in helping students plan their career path and goals. The competition winner will be announced Friday May 1 st. In addition to the chance to be a financial adviser for the day, the winning student will also receive a gift certificate to a local restaurant for lunch. The top ten runners up will receive 20 points extra credit to be added to their Quarter 4 grade. Qualification requirements: 1. Students must submit their stock portfolios by the assigned due date (via rubric). 2. Students will write a letter of interest explaining why they would like to be a Financial Adviser for the Day and how this experience will assist them in their career path. The letter should contain pertinent questions to ask the advisers during the shadowing experience. PARENT SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT THE INTENT TO COMPETE LETTER. LETTERS OF INTENT ARE DUE NO LATER THEN FRIDAY APRIL 24 th. 3. Top portfolios and essays will be assessed by a panel of teachers and administrators to determine the winner. In case of a tie, students will be asked to present their portfolios. 4. The winning student s parent will be contacted and must sign a permission slip allowing the student to leave campus for the day. Additional requirements: 1. Students must be able to provide their own transportation to and from the Morgan Stanley office on Tuesday, May 12 th. 2. Students must be willing to share their experience with classmates after the shadowing event. 3. Students are expected to represent BDCHS as the amazing young adult we all believe they are. 4. 2 Stock Portfolio Your final grade for the stock market challenge will consist of your final stock portfolio. Your stock portfolio is culmination of all of your efforts in the stock market over the course of the last 10 weeks. This is a professional portfolio and will be completed as if you are presenting your investments to a financial advisor or client. DUE DATE(s): Garnet Gold *You must turn in this rubric with your portfolio on the assigned due date. Late portfolios will incur a 50% point deduction, REGARDLESS OF ABSENCE. Requirements Description Points earned/points Possible Cover Page Title, your name, my name, block, and date. /5 Table of Contents List each page number with the corresponding /5 page title. Transaction Log Each column of the log thoroughly completed. /10 Risk Assessment and Original risk assessment and investment with /10 Investment Strategy (Revised) revision in different color. 10 Stock Reviews Refer to criteria below. /100 Final Reflection 2 paragraphs: What you learned about the stock /10 market and what you liked/disliked about the challenge. Professionalism Typed, page numbers, ½ inch 3-ring binder. Each /10 page should have the same formatting, be neat and organized. TOTAL: /150 Stock Review Criteria Each stock review must be on a separate sheet of paper and must include the following: 1. Company name and symbol 2. Industry and description of the business 3. Purchasing price and quantity purchased 4. Ending price 5. Profit/Loss Calculation sentence description of why you purchased this company 7. One paragraph description of what happened to this stock during your simulation WITH RESEARCH CITATION. (2 points) 8. Graph showing the progression your stock over the course of the simulation. 9. Description of the graph Extra credit (up to 30 points): Minimum 400 words-maximum 1,000 words Essay Question: Select two distinctly different stocks, bonds, and/or mutual funds from your Stock Market Game portfolio or choose two distinctly different stocks, bonds or mutual funds you believe would be good investments. For example, the stock or bond of a food industry company like McDonalds is distinctly different from a stock or bond of a technology industry company like Cisco. First, explain why you believe the industries your selected stocks, bonds, or mutual funds represent are good industries in which to invest. Next, share why you would invest in the stocks, bonds, or mutual funds you selected and what would make you sell each of those investments (just like Brian Stoffel says he did). Do you believe your selected stocks, bonds, or mutual funds will perform well in 2015? Why or why not?
