Counts, Internship Coordinator acounts@flcobras.com Phone: Fax: Program Description The Fountain Lake High School Internship Program is designed to assist students in their specific career focus areas and to help them successfully transition from school to career. Students who expect to begin their careers immediately upon high school graduation as well as those who need to complete post-secondary training prior to starting a career can benefit from the program. The structure involves a strong business partnership that links the program and its participants to current resources, information, and guidance from industry professionals. It provides intense, competency-based classroom work and work-site instruction specifically tailored to meet the needs of individual students. It also fosters articulation of programs between high school and post-secondary, credit-granting institutions and apprenticeship programs. A post-graduation monitoring system is incorporated that identifies and addresses the graduates ongoing needs as they advance toward their identified career goals. Instructional Program A. Course Description CAREER FOCUS MAJOR AREA PATHWAY Agriculture Mechanics and Horticulture related fields Health/ wellness, Culinary arts, Athletic training and or physical therapy, EMT/ paramedic training, Personal Trainer Labor and Delivery Nurse, Obstetrics nurse Accountant, Financial Planner, Banking, Insurance, Marketing Family Counselor, Pediatric Counselor, DHS Worker Chef, Souse Chef, Waitress/Waiter, Dietician Teacher Seamstress, Clothing Designer, Interior Designer, Personal Shopper Music Education, Music Performance, Recording/Producing, Music Therapy, Music Composition Computer Science, Information Technology, Video Production, Graphic Design, Video Game Design, Photography This may not be a complete listing. The entire program, which includes both classroom and worksite instruction, focuses on assisting students to successfully transition from school to work. Interns receive guided classroom and guided worksite instruction that is competency based, thus incorporating academics and applied
2 learning activities. Each classroom and worksite competency that an intern successfully completes is documented and placed in a portfolio and should be maintained by the intern. The portfolio will count as 25% of the final grade for the internship. Classroom Instruction The classroom portion of the Internship Program focuses on teaching students the basic skills required by all employers. Interns are individually assessed and weak areas are addressed while strong areas are reinforced. Classroom instruction occurs the first two weeks of school, then beginning the third week, every other Friday during the Internship period. Worksite Instruction The Internship Coordinator must approve individual worksites. Written agreements must be established between the school and the worksite that outline appropriate program delivery prior to student placement. Worksite instruction is guided by the employer and directly relates to the student s identified career major. Students may volunteer or be compensated for work performed at the worksite by the employer; if compensation is negotiated for an intern, it is based on fair labor standards. This program can be utilized in any program of study. However, it cannot count as credit toward or replace a student s career/major. Length of Course 1. Interns are expected to complete at least 180 hours of on-the-job training, per semester, in order to receive one credit. 2. Maximum length of enrollment in the Internship Program shall be two years (enrollment must be in consecutive years). 3. Length of course shall be established for each intern that outlines the internship planned experiences and expectations as they directly relate to the student s chosen career focus/major area. Eligibility of Students 1. Students must be sixteen years of age or older in order to meet labor law requirements. 2. Students shall apply for acceptance into the Internship Program. The student must also have the following: a. An identified career focus on file b. Completion of at least two units and enrolled in a third unit of the career major c. Academic standing of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale d. Acceptable attendance record e. Written recommendations from a counselor, a teacher in the student s career major area, a teacher outside the student s career major, and a personal references f. Membership in a vocational student organization that reflects the intern s career goals and enhances the intern s ability to excel in his/her chosen area. g. Students must submit to, and pass, a drug screen. Students are subject to random drug screening as stipulated in the Fountain Lake High School Student Handbook.
3 Curriculum/Content Framework Each Internship Program Coordinator shall follow the state curriculum/content framework approved by the Department of Workforce Education. Course Credits Credit is granted according to the following formula: 1. Interns are expected to complete 180 hours of on-the-job training, per semester, in order to receive credit. 2. Interns are expected to complete 18 hours of in class training, per semester, in order to receive credit. 3. Interns should receive one (1) credit per semester for each 180 hours of on-the-job training up to a maximum of four (4) credits for completing 720 hours within a consecutive two-year period. Student Organization Although a specific student organization does not exist for interns, the Internship Program is designed to support the guidelines, goals, and objectives of all career and technical education student organizations. Interns are required to hold membership in the student organization that represents their individual career focus/major area. The Internship Program provides leadership instruction and training and may assist students in preparing for competitions and activities associated with their particular student organization. Career Focus Major Areas Student Organizations Agriculture and related fields The National FFA Organization Business/Finance/Information Technology DECA Health & Human Services - FCCLA Responsibilities Employer s Responsibilities 1. Will provide a consistent amount of hours of work/training per week. 2. Will provide the student with supervision by a qualified and experienced employer. 3. Will provide the student with the same consideration given to other employees with regard to safety, health, social, security, and other general employment conditions. 4. Will pay the student a wage or salary comparable to other trainees if this is in the agreement. 5. Will grade the student each grading period through a performance evaluation. 6. Will notify the school coordinator at once of any unsatisfactory development. Student s Responsibilities
4 1. Will report promptly on the days and hours mutually arranged with the employer using Time Clock Application if possible on computer or smartphone. 2. Will notify the employer and coordinator well in advance when an absence is unavoidable. 3. Will cooperate with the employing supervisor. 4. Will engage in the assignment as a learning experience. 5. Will make a weekly written report to the coordinator. 6. Will remain in the program for the entire school year. 7. Will take part in the selection of a workstation. 8. Will maintain a good relationship with the employer. 9. Will participate in the related vocational student organizational activities. 10. Will not be permitted (without approval from school coordinator) to work on days when he/she is not in school. 11. Will submit to drug screenings per the Fountain Lake Student Handbook. 12. Will provided needed transportation to and from their assigned work site. Coordinator s Responsibilities 1. Will, with the assistance of the employer or training supervisor, prepare a training plan of tasks to be learned on the job and related to topics to be taught in school. A copy of this training plan will be kept on file with the employer, the coordinator, and the student. 2. Will make provision for all internship students to receive regular instruction. 3. Will visit each student a minimum of once per quarter at the training station and meet with the person to whom the student is responsible while employed. 4. Will endeavor to reconcile all complaints with the cooperation of all parties concerned and will have the authority to transfer or withdraw a student. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities Will agree to the conditions of the student s participation in the Internship Program. Classroom Expectation: Be respectful at all times. Refer to Fountain Lake Student Handbook and the Cobra Striking Excellence Chart Required Supplies: Paper, writing utensil, and charged Chromebook. A student will be issued a pink slipped if he/she reports to class three (3) times, per a semester, without appropriate books and materials. The student will be assigned Saturday school for the third offense and each time after. Grading Policy: Students will be assessed on written journal responses, portfolios, final assignments, presentations, and participation. Rubrics such as the Writing Traits Rubric, Participation Rubric, and FLHS Presentation Rubric will be used to assess student work.
5 Grading Scale: A B C D 59 and below F Late work / ReDos: Late work will not be accepted on daily assessments. For summative assessments, students will have up to 2 school days to submit the assignment. If an assignment is submitted late, students will be penalized one letter grade. At times, students will be allowed to redo assessments. These include research papers, essays, exams, portfolios, etc. In order to submit a redo, students must have turned in the assignment on time and then meet with the instructor in order to discuss the previously turned in work. Absent work: Most daily assignments and class lessons will be posted to Schoology. All major assignments will be posted in advance. If you are absent on a due date, the assignment is due the day you return. Students shall have one class day to make up their work for each class day they are absent. Refer to the Fountain Lake School Student Handbook for further guidelines. Digital Etiquette: This class will be using Schoology and Versal. All classroom rules apply to the virtual world as well. You will be respectful at all times, presenting yourself in a professional manner. Parents and guardians will also receive logins or instructions on how to access the class. Written and Oral Conventions: As young adults, you need to communicate effectively, both written and verbally. It is expected that you will edit your work before submitting final drafts. Students will be assessed on five elements: spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar/usage, and paragraphing. Please Note: Your writing will remain confidential, but if you share with me that you intend to harm yourself or others, I am obligated to report it to the appropriate authorities.
