Chapter 1. IBM Tioli Business Systems Management Solution One of your most difficult tasks in business systems management is choosing products that align IT resources with your business priorities. In an enironment that includes resources from multiple endors running on multiple platforms, understanding the status of a particular IT resource is only a small part of the big picture. To maximize the business alue of your IT inestments, you must also see how each resource affects the applications and business processes that it supports. The Tioli business systems management solution is a model that helps you understand the components of integrated business systems and then identify the Tioli products that meet those management needs. This layered model shown in Figure 1 supports real-time, predictie management of your enterprise. Business Impact Management Define your resources as they relate to business systems Eent Correlation and Automation Synthesize raw data from monitoring applications Determine root causes of problems Capture and analyze historical trends Monitoring Systems and Applications Capture and filter raw data Generate eents for eent correlation and automation layer Automate based on autonomic model Figure 1. Tioli Business Systems Management Model Integration Implementing a comprehensie business systems management solution requires careful consideration of the roles of each product as well as the integration between the products. The products in the monitoring systems and applications layer proide the information that you need to understand critical problems. These products use built-in best practice definitions to define problem signatures that reflect the behaior of a set of related metrics oer time. The products in this layer can also proide automation as part of the autonomic model, using automation at the source to attempt to fix a problem before it becomes critical. After the problem is considered critical, an eent is generated and sent to the eent correlation and automation layer. When the condition is resoled, an eent is also sent to clear the initial eent. The products in the eent correlation and automation layer analyze the raw data from the monitoring layer. In the eent correlation and automation layer, effectie business management products correlate problem signatures with the systems on which these business-significant eents occurred, to determine the root cause of the problem. These tools might also suppress related eents and actiate automation to determine the root cause or to sole the problem. When a problem found in this Copyright IBM Corp

Designing Your Solution layer has an impact on your business, the eent is forwarded to the business impact layer. An associated clearing eent should be sent to indicate the end of the impact. Products in the business impact management layer define your resources as they relate to business systems. Using products in this layer, you can interpret business-significant eents receied from the eent correlation and automation layer and display them in the context of the affected business system. For example, when the parameters of a serice leel agreement are exceeded, a product in the eent correlation and automation layer generates an eent. The business impact of this eent is understood and assigned by product in the business impact management layer. Then, through the use of products that capture and analyze historical trends in this data, you can monitor compliance to serice leel agreements and generate the appropriate reports summarizing this business data. The way that you design and implement your solution is critical. To design an effectie business systems management solution, think in terms of the following high-leel steps: 1. Designing the solution. First, identify the components of your systems, both z/os and distributed resources. What products are currently managing these resources? Are they effectie? Do they identify the business impact of system eents? 2. Identify the users and scenarios. Next, define the types and number of users and the work flows or scenarios associated with each user set. If you do not know what your users are doing, or should be doing, you cannot design an effectie solution. 3. Install and configure the products from the monitoring systems and applications layer. The products in this step are your eent sources. Defining these eent-generating products ensures that critical eents are forwarded to the eent correlation and automation layer, along with appropriate clearing eents. 4. Install and configure the products in the eent correlation and automation layer. The products in this step are your eent interpreters and filters. Defining this layer at this time ensures that all critical eents are correlated to their root causes and that business-significant eents are identified and can be forwarded to the business management impact layer. 5. Define a common data warehouse repository. An effectie business management solution cannot operate within the boundaries of a single product. All Tioli products in this model support the Tioli Data Warehouse as a common data repository. With all data in the same repository, cross-product reports that use the Crystal Reports interface can be written to show relationships among sets of data from different products. 6. Install and configure the products from the business impact management components. 2 IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager: Planning Guide

Understanding the Product Set With this strong foundation built, you can now install and configure the products in the business impact management layer. Use the scenarios and user profiles deeloped in Step 2 to identify the appropriate business systems and definitions. The Tioli business systems management solution offers products that fulfill the functions described in the model. Figure 2 shows the products associated with each layer. Figure 2. 22 Business Systems Tioli Business Systems Manager proides an Extract, Transform, and Load routine (ETL) to add aailability data into the data warehouse. Tioli Serice Leel Adisor can then build serice leel agreements (SLAs) based on this data. A business system is a group of dierse but interdependent applications and other system resources that interact to accomplish specific business functions. In Tioli Business Systems Manager, the term business system is used to represent a container of resources, which in turn can contain other business systems or representations of actual physical resources. A business system can contain applications or other resources that run on a ariety of platforms, including host, distributed, and network enironments. For example, a banking business system designed to support transactions oer the Web typically includes a Web serer running outside the company s intranet and connected directly to the Internet and a firewall that proides secure connectiity to a machine running a custom business component, such as loan processing. The loan processing business component usually runs on a distributed platform and connects to business components running on a host computer. The host handles all the bank transactions. This business system presents challenges to a system manager because it crosses the typically isolated enironments of host and distributed systems. Another example of a business system is an system. business systems include all the instances of business components that are being used in your network. You might hae a mix of Lotus Notes serers, POP mail or Microsoft Exchange serers, and other business components. An business system includes these components, as well as definitions of the relationships between them. You can create business systems by using the following methods: Automatically Creating a Business System Creating a Business System using XML Creating a Business System Manually on page 11 For more information on business systems, see Business Systems on page 39. Automatically Creating a Business System You can use the Automated Business Systems process to create business systems. When the configuration is complete, Tioli Business Systems Manager continues to automatically add newly discoered resources to the iews based on the criteria associated with the iews. Creating a Business System using XML The XML toolkit can be used to create business systems in Tioli Business Systems Manager. For example, if your site uses a repository to contain an inentory of the resources in your enironment and how they relate to one another with respect to your business systems and processes, you can extract the data from the repository and dynamically create and modify business systems using the toolkit. You can use the XML toolkit to add, modify, or delete business systems based on existing resources. For physical resources to be linked into the business systems, 10 IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager: Planning Guide

they must already exist in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. You can also use the XML toolkit to backup and restore business systems. Refer to the IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions for installing the XML toolkit. Refer to the IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager Administrator s Guide for the format of the XML file and a sample file. Creating a Business System Manually You can create a business system manually from the Tioli Business Systems Manager console. Refer to the IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager Administrator s Guide for the required steps and for information on adding resources to the new business system. Physical Resources Discoery Processing Physical resources represent the applications, subsystems, and technical deices (such as routers, serer machines, and other physical deices) that the Tioli Business Systems Manager monitors for aailability. Physical resources are defined in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database along with identifying information that includes the resource name and the resource type, as well as other information about the resource. Physical resources are categorized by type. Examples of resource types are IMS transaction, CICS region, started task (STC), or a Windows serer. Physical resources are displayed in a hierarchy. The hierarchy for z/os resources is predefined. You can configure tables or use the distributed placement rules to specify the hierarchy for distributed resources as they are created. For more detailed information on resources, refer to the IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager Introducing the Consoles and the task assistant. Tioli Business Systems Manager accepts eents indicating state changes and alerts as well as performance characteristics that indicate aailability. Howeer, before you can manage resources in your enterprise, the resources must be discoered and registered in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. The resource discoery and registration process aries depending on the data source. In some cases, the receipt of an eent triggers the discoery of the resource so that the eent can be posted against it. For z/os resources, the operating system as well as its higher leel resources must be manually created before eents can be receied for resources contained in that z/os enironment. Discoering z/os Resources Resource discoery is a process that identifies resources. The process for discoering monitored resources in the z/os enironment inoles detecting the configuration of the resources and updating the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. Tioli Business Systems Manager has three discoery processes for z/os resources: Chapter 2. Introduction to Tioli Business Systems Manager 11

Initial discoery Batch jobs are run initially when the Tioli Business Systems Manager is installed and configured. Rediscoery Batch jobs can be customized and run on a scheduled basis to gather updated information about resources in your enterprise. Autodiscoery Programs automatically detect updates, resulting in updates to the database. For IMS and DB2, autodiscoery also identifies all eligible resources within a subsystem, resulting in updates to the database. The discoery process uses arious data sources to initially populate resources in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. The z/os process inoles a series of batch functions that create a sequential file, which is forwarded to the Tioli Business Systems Manager serers. The data is then processed and stored in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. Following the installation and actiation of the IMS and DB2 data source, the autodiscoery process will identify all eligible resources within DB2 and IMS subsystems. These resources are forwarded to the Tioli Business Systems Manager serers and stored in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. If required, an optional batch discoery process is proided for IMS and DB2. Discoering Distributed Resources Tioli Business Systems Manager has two methods for discoering distributed resources: Eent processing Rules can be added to the Tioli Enterprise Console serer to forward eents to Tioli Business Systems Manager database using eent enablement. The first eent from a resource triggers the creation of the resource in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. Resources discoered through the Tioli Enterprise Console require that the corresponding resource types first be defined in the Tioli Business Systems Manager database. The common listener proides bulk and delta transactions with data sources, after a corresponding adapter is installed. Bulk transactions are a snapshot of the instrumented enironment. Bulk transactions identify which resources exist, resources that hae changed since the last bulk transaction, the associations between resources, and resources that no longer exist since the last bulk transaction. The Tioli Business Systems Manager database is populated with the information in the bulk transaction. The delta transaction updates the Tioli Business Systems Manager database as new resources are discoered. Tioli Business Systems Manager consolidates eents from a wide range of IBM and independent system endor products. Eent processing inoles capturing specific eents and routing them to Tioli Business Systems Manager. The eents result in updates to the Tioli Business Systems Manager database, which are then displayed on the Tioli Business Systems Manager console. Eents also can trigger the discoery of resources. Eents (Messages and Exceptions) Physical resources represented in Tioli Business Systems Manager can receie two eent types: messages and exceptions. Messages reflect the state of the resource 12 IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager: Planning Guide

(for example, actie, inactie, or abended). Exceptions usually indicate that a resource is experiencing a temporary condition. Eents hae an alert state and a priority. Alert states are critical (red), warning (yellow), and normal (green). Priority states are critical, high, medium, low, ignore, or unknown. Exceptions are compared against thresholds that determine whether a state change occurs. Wheneer a state change occurs, as a result of either a message or of an exception exceeding a threshold, this state change is in turn compared against thresholds to determine whether the eent is reflected in a parent resource. If so, the eent is reflected as a child eent against the parent. As eents occur within the monitored enironment, the console displays an alert icon next to the icon of the affected resource. For more information on eent processing, refer to the IBM Tioli Business Systems Manager Administrator s Guide. An example of an exception is unacceptable response time associated with a CICS transaction. In general, eents in the distributed enironment that are sent from the Tioli Enterprise Console serer are considered exceptions. An example of a message is the reception of a console message informing you that a batch job has ended with errors, causing a state change to occur. Eent Viewer The Eent Viewer displays eents (exceptions and messages) that are associated with either a resource or all of the resources within a business system. Double-clicking an eent opens a window that contains details for the eent. Because an eent is associated with a resource and that resource can appear in multiple business systems, the Eent Viewer filters out the duplicates and displays only unique eents. The Eent Viewer displays only the last message for a resource. To see all of the messages for a resource: 1. Right-click the message row to open the popup menu. 2. Click Resource Properties. The last message is the only one that is releant and the only one you can take action against. When there are multiple exceptions, all are releant. New resources added to a business system are not displayed in the eent iewer until the UpdateObjectPathCache job runs, by default eery 15 minutes. Propagation Propagation is the process that allows eents to escalate or propagate a status up the business system iew. Exceptions, console messages, and other eents are assigned priorities for each resource. When a resource receies an eent, the priority of the eent is examined and compared against tolerance rates set for that resource. If a threshold is exceeded, an alert occurs on that resource and sends an eent (called a child eent) to its parent resource on the hierarchy. This, in turn, can cause another eent to occur and another alert to be sent further up the hierarchy. These thresholds are configured in one of the following ways: A set of counts against which the number of exceptions related to contained objects are compared A rule specifying a percentage range against which a weighted exception alue is compared Propagation always flows upward. Propagation can be customized by: Setting the message or exception priority and alert state Chapter 2. Introduction to Tioli Business Systems Manager 13
