Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer is also known as Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange. A B C In this example, you must choose A, B, or C. Optional Choice: When an item is below the line, that item is optional. In the first example, you can choose A or nothing at all. 17 New for New for Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Version 6.4 The following features are new for Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Version 6.4: Managing Exchange Database Aailability Group members by using a single policy on page 98 You can back up Exchange Database Aailability Group (DAG) serers by using a common policy. In DAG enironments you can complete the following tasks: Back up DAG databases to a common node. The backups can be managed by a single policy regardless of which DAG member (serer) performed the backup. Coordinate backups between DAG members so that only one copy is backed up per backup cycle. Reduce the load on the production Exchange serer in a DAG by setting a preference for backing up a healthy passie database copy unless no healthy passie copy is aailable. If no healthy passie copy is aailable, the backup is taken from the actie database copy. Whether the backup is taken from the actie or the passie copy, the backup is managed as a single entity. Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer databases IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer proides online backups and restores of Microsoft Exchange Serer components to Tioli Storage Manager storage. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer proides a connection between an Exchange Serer and a Tioli Storage Manager serer which allows Exchange data to be protected and managed by Tioli Storage Manager. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer protects Exchange Serer data and improes the aailability of Exchange databases. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer proides these features and functions. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange oeriew This section proides introductory information about Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange performs online backups and restores of Microsoft Exchange Serer storage groups (Exchange Serer 2007) or databases (Exchange Serer 2010) to Tioli Storage Manager storage or local shadow olumes. You can perform backups and restores using a command-line or graphical user interface (GUI). Refer to your Exchange Serer documentation for complete, detailed information regarding the backup and restore of Microsoft Exchange Serers. Beginning with Exchange Serer 2010 Microsoft no longer supports the Microsoft Legacy API (streaming) for backup and restore operations; it only supports the use of VSS for the backup and restore. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange operations use the Tioli Storage Manager application programming interface (API) to communicate with the Tioli Storage Manager serer, and use the Exchange API to communicate with Exchange Serer. In addition to using these APIs, Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange VSS operations use the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client (VSS Requestor) and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Serice to produce an online snapshot (point-in-time consistent copy) of Exchange data that can be stored on local shadow olumes or on Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. You must install Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange on the same system as the Exchange Serer. For the required leel of Tioli Storage Manager serer, see Software and operating system requirements on page 54. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange also supports operations in a Microsoft Windows Failoer Clustering (preiously MSCS), Veritas Cluster Serer (VCS), and Database Aailability Group (DAG) enironment. Exchange Serer 2010: Features oeriew Certain Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange functions ary based upon the ersion of Exchange Serer in your enironment. Exchange Serer 2010 introduces functions that differ from functions aailable with Exchange Serer 2007: Backup methods Exchange Serer 2010 proides Database Aailability Groups (DAG). A DAG consists of mailbox serers that proide recoery from database, serer, or network failures. They proide continuous replication and continuous mailbox aailability (replaces Exchange Serer 2007 LCR, CCR, and SCR replication). Exchange databases replace Exchange storage groups. Exchange Management Shell commands hae been changed to support the new Exchange features and storage configuration. The Recoery Database (RDB) replaces the Recoery Storage Group (RSG). The number of databases allowed for each Exchange serer increases from 50 to 100. Single Copy Clustering (SCC) is not aailable with Exchange Serer Only VSS-style backups are supported. Starting with Exchange Serer 2010, Microsoft no longer supports legacy-style (streaming) backups. Data Protection for Exchange proides a Legacy method and a VSS method for backing up data. Data Protection for Exchange tracks and stores mailbox location history, which is used to automate mailbox restore operations. This causes a delay before each backup. In small or centralized Actie Directory enironment, the delay might be a few seconds or minutes. In large or geographically disperse Actie Directory enironments, the delay might take more time. If you do not plan to use mailbox restore, you can safely disable mailbox history. Legacy backup oeriew A Legacy backup creates a copy of an Exchange Serer 2007 storage group on Tioli Storage Manager storage media. The backup includes any associated transaction logs. When you initiate a Legacy backup operation, Data Protection for Exchange completes the following actions: 1. Begins a session with a Tioli Storage Manager serer using the Tioli Storage Manager API and information contained in a client options file. Chapter 1. 22 2. Informs the Exchange Serer that a backup is ready to begin. 3. Receies data from the Exchange Serer and sends it to the Tioli Storage Manager serer. 4. Informs the Exchange Serer that the backup is complete. 5. Ends the Tioli Storage Manager serer session. The following characteristics are true of Legacy backups: You can use full, copy, incremental, differential, and database copy backup types. Backup granularity is at the database and storage-group leel. Backups are stored on Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. Backups are managed through the Tioli Storage Manager serer policy. Backups can be performed in a Microsoft Windows Failoer Clustering (preiously MSCS) or Veritas Cluster Serer (VCS) enironments. Backups proide Exchange Serer database zeroing function. Backups proide Exchange Serer database integrity check function. The following restrictions apply: Microsoft does not support legacy backups on cluster continuous replication (CCR) or local continuous replication (LCR). Microsoft does not support performing legacy (or VSS) backups on standby continuous replication (SCR) databases. You cannot run legacy backups on CCR, LCR, or SCR databases. You can run VSS Backups on CCR and LCR databases. You can use legacy backups to backup databases that hae CCR, LCR, or SCR replicas, but you must backup the primary database, not the replica. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange proides backup and restore functions for the Exchange storage groups and associated transaction logs. Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange does not proide a complete disaster recoery solution for an Exchange Serer. In a disaster recoery situation, Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange only restores storage groups. Other files need to be restored in a disaster recoery situation. Refer to your Microsoft Exchange Serer documentation for disaster recoery considerations. Personal folders and personal address books that are stored on Microsoft Outlook clients are not protected by Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange. The Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client can be used on the Outlook client platform to back up and restore these files. Because the Outlook client normally keeps these files locked when running, you should stop the Outlook client before backing up or restoring these files. 23 VSS Backup A VSS Backup uses Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Serice technology to produce an online snapshot (point-in-time consistent copy) of Exchange data. A VSS Backup means that the Exchange Serer is not in backup mode for an extended period of time. The length of time to perform the snapshot is usually measured in seconds, not hours. In addition, a VSS Backup allows a snapshot of large amounts of data at one time because the snapshot works at the olume leel. VSS Backups can be stored on Tioli Storage Manager serer storage or local VSS shadow olumes. Both of these storage destinations require that sufficient space be aailable for the snapshot. VSS Backups stored locally on VSS shadow olumes are directly accessible by the Exchange system (as long as sufficient space is aailable for the snapshot). These types of local VSS Backups are faster for a couple of reasons: They are faster because the way the snapshots are managed and because the data is not placed into Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. Restoring these backups is also fast because the Exchange data is not transferred from Tioli Storage Manager serer storage oer the network. For local VSS Backups you must hae a licensed ersion of IBM Tioli Storage FlashCopy Manager or IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Copy Serices installed on your system. When performing VSS Backups and moing data to Tioli Storage Manager serer storage, sufficient space on local snapshot olumes is still temporarily required to hold the snapshot. For Exchange data backed up to Tioli Storage Manager serer storage, the Exchange data on the snapshot olume is sent to the Tioli Storage Manager serer. After the data transfer to the serer is complete, the snapshot olume is made aailable for reuse. If you are storing VSS Backups locally and the maximum number of local backup ersions to be maintained (as specified by the Tioli Storage Manager policy) is reached, the oldest backup ersion is expired to create the snapshot for the backup to Tioli Storage Manager serer storage. For Exchange data backed up to local VSS shadow olumes, the snapshot backup resides on the shadow copy olume. For Exchange data backed up to both destinations, a local snapshot backup is performed and the Exchange data on the local snapshot olume is sent to the Tioli Storage Manager serer. The local snapshot olume is retained as a local backup. The Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client seres as the VSS requestor that communicates with VSS to access the Exchange data to create shadow copies of Exchange storage groups. Data Protection for Exchange seres as a front end for VSS Backup operations. Because of the role that the backup-archie client performs as the VSS requestor, features such as LAN-free backup, client-side deduplication, data encryption, and data compression require that options related to these features be specified in the backup-archie client options file for VSS operations. With the IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Copy Serices Microsoft Exchange VSS Integration Module, you can manage local persistent snapshots and perform offloaded VSS backups. Data Protection for Exchange performs the following actions when a VSS Backup operation is initiated: 1. Data Protection for Exchange alidates the state of Exchange serer objects. 2. It begins a session with a Tioli Storage Manager serer. Chapter 1. Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer databases 5

24 3. It erifies that the VSS serice is running and that the Exchange writer is aailable. 4. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor lists the backup components through the VSS Writer. 5. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor performs the VSS snapshot backup preparation stage. 6. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor performs the actual VSS Backup. 7. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor performs an integrity check on the VSS Backup. 8. Optionally, the integrity check can be offloaded to an alternatie machine that has the Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor installed and configured. 9. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor backs up the data, including metadata, to a Tioli Storage Manager serer. Optionally, the moement of data to a Tioli Storage Manager serer can be offloaded to an alternate machine that has the Tioli Storage Manager VSS Requestor installed and configured. 10. The Tioli Storage Manager VSS requestor marks the backup as complete in VSS. 11. Data Protection for Exchange ends the Tioli Storage Manager serer session. VSS serice oeriew The VSS serice manages and directs three VSS software applications that are used during VSS operations. These are the VSS software applications that the VSS Serice manages and directs: VSS writer The VSS writer for the Microsoft Exchanger Serer is the Microsoft Exchange Writer. The Microsoft Exchange Writer is proided by the Microsoft Exchange Information Store serice. VSS requestor This application initiates a snapshot operation. The application sends a command to the VSS serice to create a shadow copy of a specified olume. The VSS requestor is the Tioli Storage Manager backup-archie client. VSS proider This application produces the shadow copy and also manages the olumes where the Exchange data resides. A proider can be a system proider (such as the one included with the Microsoft Windows operating system), a software proider, or a hardware proider (such as one that is included with a storage system). VSS hardware proiders require installation and configuration, including the installation of all required fix packages. 25 VSS system proider oeriew A VSS system proider assists with creating and maintaining copies on local shadow olumes. The VSS system proider refers to the default VSS proider that is aailable with Windows Serer. Be aware that if you are using the Windows VSS system proider, no configuration is required. Howeer, you can make some configuration changes using the VSSADMIN commands. See Microsoft documentation on the VSSADMIN commands for details. VSS software or hardware proider oeriew A software or hardware proider acts as an interface during VSS processing at the software or hardware leel respectiely. If you use a software or hardware proider, consider the following requirements when planning for VSS Backups: Place database files on a separate and dedicated logical olume. Place logs for each database on a separate logical olume. Do not place non-exchange data on storage olumes that are dedicated to Exchange data. When using hardware snapshot proiders, do not share storage group LUNs with other storage groups or applications. Make sure to read and follow specific installation and configuration instructions in the documentation proided by your VSS proider endor. If a hardware proider is used, configure the disks that store Exchange data as basic disks. VSS Backup characteristics Some VSS Backup characteristics are different from Legacy backup characteristics. Examples of these differences are the backup characteristics for types supported, the backup granularity, and the backup storage location options. The following characteristics are true of VSS Backups: Full, copy, incremental, and differential backup types are supported. Database copy backup types are not supported. Backup granularity is at the storage group or database leel only. Backups are managed through Tioli Storage Manager serer policy. Backups can be stored on local shadow olumes, Tioli Storage Manager serer storage, or both locations. Different policy settings can be defined for each storage location, backup method, and backup type (FULL or COPY). Backups to Tioli Storage Manager serer storage can be offloaded to an alternate machine as resource relief for production serers. Backups can be run in a Microsoft Windows Failoer Clustering or Veritas Cluster Serer (VCS) enironments. Backups do not proide an Exchange Serer database zeroing function. Backups proide an Exchange Serer database integrity check function. Restore storage groups or database backups to the Recoery Storage Group or Recoery Database, or to an alternatie location. VSS Backups can be restored to flat files without the inolement of the Exchange Serer. See the restorefiles command for more details. Chapter 1. Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer databases 7

26 VSS is the only aailable backup method on Exchange Serer For databases in an Exchange Serer DAG that hae two or more healthy copies, the database integrity check can be skipped. Exchange Serer Database Aailability Group (DAG) databases can be backed up under a common DAG node name, regardless of which DAG member runs the backup. When backing up data to a common node, the backups are managed by a common policy, and the user can restore to any Exchange Serer. Setting the minimum interal can preent too frequent backups. VSS Backup planning requirements Plan a VSS Backup strategy to optimize your backup operations performance and aoid potential problems. Consider the following requirements when planning for VSS Backups: When running VSS operations, make sure you hae at least 200 MB of free disk space on your Windows System Drie. This space is used to hold the metadata files for Data Protection for Exchange. Make sure to reiew best practice recommendations by Microsoft for your leel of Exchange Serer. For example, Microsoft recommends one database per storage group with Exchange Serer If you are using Exchange Serer 2007, consider using Exchange Serer LCR, CCR, or SCR replication technology to help protect your Exchange Serer and possibly reduce the frequency of backup operations. Single Copy Cluster (SCC) local backups can be restored to other nodes in the cluster. Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) local backups can only be restored to the node that performed the backup. Refer to your Microsoft documentation for details regarding this technology. If you are using Exchange Serer 2010, consider using DAG database replication technologies. Refer to your Microsoft documentation for details regarding this technology. Make sure you hae a well-defined and tested recoery plan that meets your serice leel objecties. Use single hardware LUNs for log and system files. Use single hardware LUNs for the database files. Use basic disks. If you plan to keep some VSS snapshot backups on local shadow olumes only, make sure to consider the VSS proider-specific implementation and configuration options when setting up your strategy. For example, if your VSS hardware proider supports a full-copy snapshot ersus a copy-on-write (COW) snapshot mechanism, be aware that full-copy type implementations hae greater disk storage requirements but are less risky because they do not rely on the original olume to restore the data. COW implementations require much less disk storage but rely completely on the original olume to perform a restore. Since these implementations are entirely controlled by the VSS proider and not Data Protection for Exchange, make sure to consult your VSS proider documentation for a complete understanding of your VSS implementation. If you perform parallel VSS Backups, stagger the start of the backups by at least ten minutes. This interal ensures the snapshot operations do not oerlap. If you do not stagger the snapshots, errors can occur. In addition, configure the parallel instance backups so they do not take snapshots of the same olumes. Make sure that parallel backups do not snapshot the same LUN. Do not place multiple olumes on the same LUN. Microsoft recommends that you configure a single olume, single partition, and single LUN as 1 to 1 to 1. 8 IBM Tioli Storage Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Serer Installation and User's Guide

27 Do not set the ASNODENAME option in the dsm.opt file when using Data Protection for Exchange. Setting ASNODENAME can cause VSS Backups and VSS Restores to fail. IBM System Storage requirements Specific database, log, file, and LUN settings are required for IBM System Storage. The DS8000, SAN Volume Controller, Storwize V7000, and XIV storage subsystems require these settings when planning for VSS Backups: Place database files on a separate and dedicated logical olume. Place logs on a separate logical olume. Do not place non-exchange data on storage olumes that are dedicated to Exchange. When using hardware snapshot proiders, make sure the storage group LUNs are dedicated to only one storage group or application. If you delete a LOCAL snapshot that is stored on a SAN Volume Controller or Storwize V7000 Space Efficient olume (SEV) that has multiple dependent targets, you must delete them in the same order in which you created them. That is, you must delete the oldest one first, followed by the second oldest, and so on. Failure to delete them in this order can cause remoal of other snapshots of the same source. (SAN Volume Controller and Storwize V7000 only) If you use multiple target FlashCopy mappings, a mapping can stay in the copying state after all the source data is copied to the target. This situation can occur if mappings that were started earlier and use the same source disk are not yet fully copied. Because of this, you should initiate local backups for SAN Volume Controller and Storwize V7000 storage subsystems at interals greater than the time required for the background copy process to complete. Offloaded VSS Backups An offloaded backup uses another machine to run the integrity check and to moe the data to the Tioli Storage Manager serer. This type of backup shifts the backup load from the production machine to another machine. An offloaded VSS Backup requires a VSS hardware proider that supports transportable shadow copy olumes is installed on the production and secondary machines. Offloaded VSS Backups require a Tioli Storage FlashCopy Manager license. Tioli Storage FlashCopy Manager is a separately purchasable program. Continuous replication backups Continuous replication backups are an effectie use of Exchange Serer 2007 and Exchange Serer 2010 features. Important: If you are using Exchange Serer 2007, consider using Exchange Serer Local Continuous Replication (LCR) or Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) technology to help protect your Exchange Serer and possibly reduce the frequency of backup operations. Single Copy Cluster (SCC) local backups can be restored to other nodes in the cluster. Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) local backups can only be restored to the node that performed the backup.
