Once an aspiring teacher whose college dreams were unexpectedly dashed at a younger age, Hazel enrolled in college after raising her children and by 1985 she had completed her associate in arts and bachelor degrees at Chaminade University. As a lifelong learner, she enjoyed culinary classes at Lyon Arboretum and Kapiolani CC. Chef Instructor Kusuma Cooray's exquisite South Indian and Sri Lankan culinary styles filled her palate with flavors. Burns School of Medicine On July 31st, the University of Hawai i Board of Regents voted to accept a gift of $3 million from longtime UH supporters and community philanthropists Barry and Virginia Weinman. The gift established the Barry and Virginia Weinman Dean s Chair in Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). The Weinmans established the fund to inspire additional endowment gifts in support of UH and JABSOM during the last year of the Centennial Campaign, signal their support for new medical school dean, Dr. Jerris Hedges, and enhance the dean s ability to positively impact the future quality of health care in the state of Hawai i. This critical funding will enhance our medical school's ability to be a driving force in the islands for excellence - in medical education, biomedical research, clinical practice and in health care policy, particularly in addressing the crucial health care and workforce issues facing our state, Dr. Jerris Hedges, Dean of JABSOM In 2006, the Weinmans pledged $1 million to establish the Barry and Virginia Weinman Fellowship for ten medical students at JABSOM, to cover tuition and fees for all four years of medical school. The endowment will permit the dean to take advantage of unanticipated opportunities and address key priorities within the medical school. The funds may be used to recruit and retain talented faculty; to support quality research and provide seed research funding, particularly among promising junior faculty; to support initiatives which enhance the medical education curriculum; to better address the physician and health care work force shortage in the state, and to enhance the medical school s role in shaping health care policy for the state of Hawai i.

HILTO FOUDATIO AWARDS $5 MILLIO TO CIP AT DIAMOD HAD "In keeping with Conrad Hilton's passion and love of the hospitality industry, we are pleased to support the creation of the Culinary Institute of the Pacifi c (CIP) at the University of Hawai i. The CIP will provide critically needed training for future chefs; thereby helping to develop meaningful careers in the food service industry while providing delicious meals for the enjoyment of tourists and locals alike." Steven M. Hilton, President, Conrad. Hilton Foundation Plans for a new Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Diamond Head have taken a giant step forward thanks to a $5 million grant from the Conrad. Hilton Foundation. Students will have access to affordable, worldclass culinary training from top chef instructors from industry and internationally-renown guest chefs that will give them a competitive advantage in their fi eld, said John Morton The State of Hawai i benefits from a pipeline of qualified, educated workers for the restaurant and hospitality industries, increased tourism spending and the impact on its global competitiveness. Close to $8.1 million in private funding has been raised through the Conrad. Hilton Foundation gift and additional commitments. The new facilities will occupy 40,000 square feet on 7.8 acres will meet Leadership in nergy and nvironmental Design standards for environmental sustainability. Students at the advanced culinary institute will have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Applied Science with a Concentration in Culinary Management from the University of Hawai i West O`ahu which will prepare them for leadership roles in the culinary and hospitality industries. Students may also obtain advanced professional certificates for training in Asian, Pacific and Hawaiian cuisine. Working professionals will be able to take continuing education courses to sharpen their culinary and business skills. We need an institution of higher learning to teach the kind of cooking that exists in Hawai i today. We need a curriculum whereby students understand the whys and the hows of our cross cultural cooking style; a place where the end product is about teaching, creativity and innovation; a school that brings out the best where ast truly meets West in a culinary way; a venue to showcase Hawai i its food history and flavors, the soul to our local cuisine, no matter what label you put to it to the rest of the world. Please visit "Giving Priorities" HOORIG TH FOUDRS "The geography department at UH Hilo gave me the basis for becoming a successful professional. What I am giving back is only a small proportion of the added value I received at UH Hilo. Ron Terry As a student at UH Hilo Ron Terry pulled weeds at anthurium farms to pay his tuition. He was the first member of his family to go to college and appreciated attending a smaller school. otwithstanding its size, the fledgling geography department offered opportunities for sophisticated research on Mauna Kea and the surrounding forests, the sort of work that is typically reserved for graduate students, said Terry. At the urging of his instructors, Terry went on to graduate school at Louisiana State University, where he earned his master s degree and a PhD in geography. About 30 percent of our students come from families with very limited resources and nearly 70 percent are the fi rst in their families to attend college. This generous contribution will help lessen the burden of debt with which so many UH Hilo students graduate, while honoring the visionary founders of one of our stellar programs. Chancellor Rose Tseng Today, Terry is a successful businessman, and the founder of Geometrician Associates in Hilo, a consulting firm that conducts environmental impact assessments. To help students have access to college and honor the department s founders: Drs. Jim and Sonia Juvik, Dr. Jim Kelly and the late Dr. Jack Healy, Terry established a $25,000 endowed scholarship at UH Hilo and named it the Geography Founders Scholarship.

5 SCHOLARSHIP FOR BTA ALPHA PSI Beta Alpha Psi was instrumental in guiding me to a successful career in public accounting. I believe that student organizations such as Beta Alpha Psi bridge the gap between academia and the real business world by introducing students to business professionals, encouraging leadership and teamwork, and developing a sense of ethical, social and public responsibility. The initial gift of $25,000 will be matched with funds from the Shidler s Matching Gift Program to total $50,000. The Patrick Oki ndowed Scholarship Fund for Beta Alpha Psi will provide scholarships to students who are officers or committee chairs of Beta Alpha Psi-Delta Theta Chapter majoring in accounting. Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for financial information students and gives recognition to scholastic and professional excellence. This generous gift from Patrick Oki will not only support members of Beta Alpha Psi but also encourage students to actively pursue leadership roles, said V. Vance Roley. Student organizations play an important role at the College by nurturing the social, academic and professional development of a student. Patrick Oki started his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Hawai i and in 2005 joined the Honolulu office of Grant Thornton LLP as an audit partner. As a former member of Beta Alpha Psi- Delta Theta Chapter, Oki continues to give back through networking and professional activities. Lifelong Learner continued from page 1 Professor Joe Ciotti captivated her imagination and deepened her knowledge in Polynesian voyaging, physics and astronomy. Professor Libby Young raised her awareness of journalists' responsibilities in researching and writing compelling stories. Six years ago, when Hazel Valier began working with us on establishing what would become the largest gift of her lifetime, she wanted to do something that would support her belief in the transformative power of education, and her deep desire to support the children of Hawai i a place she called home for more than 30 years. Through her estate plans, she established a charitable remainder annuity trust from which $293,330 was distributed to the UH Foundation in support of faculty teaching funds, named after Chef Instructor Kusuma Cooray, Professor Joseph Ciotti and Professor Libby Young. Though Hazel is no longer with us, her legacy will live on with other lifelong learners exploring new horizons through community college programs. Hawaii.edu
