Tokuno, Associate Dean Graduate Division Dexter J L Choy, Graduate Chair School of Travel Industry Management Annual Program Quality Report A comprehensive annual report on the Master of Science in Travel Industry Management was submitted last year. A copy is attached for easy reference. Key highlights of the report are: The program is ranked nationally among the top ten programs offering master's degrees in hospitality and tourism management. The program is the only major graduate program located in Hawaii specializing in the field serving the State and the Asia-Pacific region. The program is consistent with the UH's land grant mission to support the State's largest industry. The program's net tuition collected per student has been among the highest of all programs at UHM. The mix of students provides for cross cultural exchange during their studies and as they pursue their profession after graduation. The size of the program is optimal in view of the existing faculty and resources of the School. The quality of students is high; graduation rate is high; and the time to completion is two years as expected. Overall, the program has been a cost effective program that benefits the State, University, Manoa Campus and Asia-Pacific region. Graduates have achieved responsible professional positions in industry, government and educational institutions. The most recent spreadsheets provided data on time to degree, attrition and number of graduates. These parameters for the MS program have not significantly changed since last year's report. Recent financial data were not provided so it is not possible to update the analysis done in last year's report. Our main focus for this academic year is to develop an assessment plan for the MS program. We have reviewed the learning objectives for the program; are in the process of developing a curriculum map; and revising the sequencing of required TIM core courses. We also are

2 reviewing our admission requirements to ensure that students come with sufficient preparation to succeed in the program. We currently are requesting to hire two additional faculty members, one in hospitality management and one in transportation management. The School has available funds to hire new faculty. With additional faculty, we are planning to expand the elective courses for graduate students; increase the number of students in the program; and investigate the potential for a doctoral program. Given the expected retirement of "baby boomers", there is an increasing demand for doctoral qualified faculty in hospitality and tourism. This is evident in the large number of positions being advertised nationally, not counting the international institutions that are seeking qualified faculty for their programs. The TIM School can have an integral role by developing a doctoral program in cooperation with other units on campus. We will be investigating the feasibility of a doctoral program after we have completed the assessment plan for the MS.

3 School of Travel Industry Management Retention and Graduation Report, September 2011 Current Practices to Improve Retention and Graduation Rates Academic Academic Advising Mandatory academic advising for freshman and sophomores; highly recommended for juniors and seniors Mandatory academic advising for students on Academic Action New Student Orientation academic advising sessions Promote academic planning to graduate in four years Mandatory preliminary graduation check one semester prior to graduation Recruiting sessions at TIM for groups of High School students and teachers Articulation TIM informational sessions for students at UH system community colleges to keep them informed about UH Manoa and TIM curriculum changes to ensure a smooth transition to TIM Courses at 100-level articulated with the CCs Worked with KCC to ease the transition to TIM and enable students to graduate in four years Instruction Additional focus-designated and GenEd course offerings added to TIM curriculum Established SLOs to enhance the student learning environment Increased access to Neighbor Islands through distance learning; TIM Certificate offered through online courses Non-Academic Student Academic Achievements Dean s List students are selected each semester Merit scholarship recipients are recognized in the TIM newsletter Annual outstanding student awards Student achievements recognized at the TIM Fall and Spring graduation receptions Co-Curricular Activities Six TIM student clubs promote student engagement, leadership and networking through industry site visits,

4 School of Travel Industry Management Retention and Graduation Report, September 2011 community service, fundraising, networking events and social activities Internship Program Students augment classroom learning with practical skills and gain invaluable industry work experience through 800 hours of internships Two different internship experiences fosters motivation for desirable career opportunities Provides students with opportunity to work on neighbor islands, Mainland, and in other countries Career Placement Career advising, resume writing assistance, and job interview assistance On-campus interviews available to graduating seniors 100 percent job placement Student Awards Students are recognized for outstanding academic and service achievements at the Na Kakui Netlinks event, the annual networking event run by the Events Management and Marketing class. TIM School Activities Provide travel industry seminar opportunities throughout academic year, such as the Bill Lane Lecture Series, Pacific Asia Travel Association, Travel and Tourism Research Association, etc. Annual Back to School Bash welcome for students, faculty, alumni and staff, KCC is also invited Networking events with industry professionals Raising student scholarship funds about a quarter million dollars of scholarship monies raised last year

5 School of Travel Industry Management Retention and Graduation Report, September 2011 Additional Practices Implemented or Being Developed in the Academic Year Academic Admissions and Graduation Grade Policies Lowered TIM admissions and graduation GPAs to 2.00 cumulative GPAs to conform to UH Manoa GPA requirements Instruction New FGB course offered in Fall 2011, TIM 102 Food and World Cultures TIM learning community being developed for Fall 2012 More focus designated courses in required upper division TIM courses are being developed Revised four-year academic plan for both major emphases Permission is being sought to hire sufficient faculty to enable curriculum to offer relevant elective courses necessary for graduation and retention Student Academic Achievements Provide more merit scholarships for students Non-Academic Co-Curricular Activities New student club formed in Fall 2011 with national hotel association with current president who is a TIM alumnus. New club fair at the Convocation reception to promote student involvement in the clubs TIM School Activities Convocation for new students implemented Fall 2011 to welcome new students and parents. A new TIM Student Handbook was prepared and distributed to all students

6 Native Hawaiian Activities in the TIM School During the past decade, the School of Travel Industry Management has succeeded in incorporating Hawaiian values, instructional materials and personnel in its curriculum, research and outreach. Our plan with regard to incorporating further Hawaiian activities, materials and attracting more Hawaiian students and faculty will build upon the following accomplishments to include recruitment, mentorship and externally funded programs. Curriculum: TIM 369e course on Hospitality Management by Hawaiian Values is taught every semester. This course was added to the TIM curriculum in Research and Community Outreach: Ola Hawai`i Curriculum Development funded by Administration for Native Americans ANA federal $400,000 grant was completed in 2009 and the materials are currently being used in instruction. Altogether, two cohorts of 32 certified Hawaiian tourism cultural experts were trained through this program in partnership with the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association (NaHHA). Hawai`i Tourism Authority study funded by HTA for $25,000 was completed in Spring 2011 to provide training to Chinese and Korean tour operators familiarization with Hawaiian culture. Grant proposals for externally-funded projects on Native Hawaiian training and entrepreneurship are continually being submitted. In 2009 major grant proposals submitted to funding agencies included one in partnership with NaHHA ($400,000) and another multi-disciplinary one ($1 million) on Hawaii Sustainable tourism that included a Hawaiian component. (not funded) Discussions on collaboration with other units on Native Hawaiian components are being pursued with other units regarding potential collaboration in teaching and research in Sustainable Tourism. Many TIM professional training programs include a Hawaiian cultural component, using Native Hawaiian cultural experts. Recruitment and mentorship: The TIM student body includes a few dozen Hawaiian students, some of whom are double majoring in Hawaiian Studies.

7 Mentoring program with industry we are planning to develop an online mentoring program that will have a Hawaiian component. Recruiting high schools students have been stepped up, and increased efforts in tourism education outreach to the Hawaiian and local communities are being planned. Staffing: TIM has 2 Hawaiian staff members and 1 lecturer, representing about 10 percent of personnel. If allowed to hire additional faculty, qualified Native Hawaiians are certainly highly desirable.
