2 1. Getting started What are the preconditions for remote data recovery (RDR)? Structural damage (deleted files, new installations etc.) Structurally damaged databases (Outlook PST files, MS SQL, MS Exchange databases) Bootable Windows system with Internet access via LAN, DSL etc. Important! Physically destroyed or damaged media CANNOT be processed remotely. Important! Physically destroyed or damaged media CANNOT be processed remotely. What do you need for online data recovery (RDR)? The affected medium (hard disk drive) must first be connected as a secondary disk (slave). The medium must be easily recognised by BIOS and Windows (storage device management). Download the Ontrack Client software and install it on the Windows startup disk (C:). Important! The Ontrack Client software must NOT be installed on the affected hard disk. Ontrack Client preconditions: The drive letters Z: and P: must not be occupied. There must not be any remote maintenance software installed on the computer (e.g., VNC, TeamViewer etc.). Page 2 of 24

3 2. Installation type #1: For stand alone Windows Workstations Download and install Ontrack Remote Client. Link: Save the odrrs.exe file locally. Double click the odrrs.exe file to install the Remote Client. Page 3 of 24

9 Important! After the restart, Windows starts up with a lower screen resolution. This is due to our Remote Client or our proprietary graphics drivers. Page 9 of 24

10 Click Connect to set up the remote connection and start the Remote Client. Continue with Windows : Our Remote Client ends and Windows starts again as normal. Click to continue. Page 10 of 24

11 Enter your job number. (You can find your job number on the Supplementary technical sheet.) Enter the job number as follows: 1GA20130XXXXX Important! Replace XXXXX with YOUR job number. You have the option to enter a server Important! Do not use a proxy server. Page 11 of 24

12 Click to continue. A connection to Kroll Ontrack is set up. Page 12 of 24

13 The connection was set up successfully and the Ontrack employees start the diagnosis. Important! This window remains visible during the entire diagnosis and data recovery process. Page 13 of 24

14 3. Installation Type #2: For Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) RDP support only works with Windows Vista, 7, 2008 and 2008 R2 Setting up a connection via Remote Desktop. For download and setup, see > Version #1 Important! Exception #1 > Do NOT restart the computer after installation! Page 14 of 24

15 First, log out of the current Remote Session. And connect again via Remote Desktop. Important! Change the screen resolution under Settings > Display > 800 x 600 pixels Start the Remote Desktop and use the same user as was used for the installation of the Ontrack Remote Client (e.g., Administrator) Page 15 of 24

16 Start the Remote Desktop and use the same user as was used for the installation of the Ontrack Remote Client (e.g., Administrator). Continue with Connect and then follow the instructions from Setup Version #1. Page 16 of 24

17 Once you are successfully connected to Kroll Ontrack: Leave the Remote Desktop window open or... Minimise the window and move it. Important! Do NOT close or log out of the Remote Desktop window! This will interrupt the connection with Kroll Ontrack and it will no longer be possible to perform the diagnosis. Page 17 of 24

18 The following message appears in the Remote Desktop window once Kroll Ontrack has completed the diagnosis and terminated the Remote Connection. Confirm with OK. Click Exit to confirm if you would like to once again use Windows instead of our Remote Client Page 18 of 24

19 Select Log off, activate the Start Windows instead of Ontrack Data Recovery option and confirm with OK in order to be able to connect to Windows as normal at a later stage. Page 19 of 24

20 4. Recovery Done: Data recovery is complete. Click OK to continue.. Click Exit if you would like to end our Remote Client. Select the Start Windows instead of Ontrack Data Recovery Remote option in order to restart the familiar Windows environment. Page 20 of 24

21 5. Starting Ontrack Recovery Remote Client manually Click Activate and continue with OK The computer restarts and our Remote Client is activated. Page 21 of 24

22 6. Uninstalling Ontrack Remote Client You can manually uninstall our Remote Software under Control Panel > Software. Page 22 of 24

23 7. FAQs 1. Internet connection errors Proceed as follows if you encounter a connection error. Click OK. Click Connect to continue.. Try different settings: > Select the Use HTTP for firewalls setting OR, > Change port number from 80 to Page 23 of 24

24 Click Continue 2. Software installation errors What to do if the following error message is displayed: Error message Error=2 configuring RDR when installing, un installing, enabling or disabling. This error message appears if the installation of the Ontrack Client was aborted prematurely and another installation attempt was made at a later point in time and the Client is not fully installed as a result. 1. Reboot your system, re install RDR Quickstart and select Repair Option. 2. If this does not work, reboot and re install again. 3. If this still does not work, uninstall the Client in accordance with the instructions in the manual. Page 24 of 24
