1 SPRING 2015 MUSIC APPRECIATION - COURSE SYLLABUS TEXAS TECH TRANSFER ACCELERATION PROGRAM / / SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE SPMA/MUSI /2S 8:00 a.m. 9:20 a.m. TR Ian B. Aipperspach, Ph. D. Office hours by appointment only iaipperspach@southplainscollege.edu Course Content The final grade for this course will be based on a percentage of points counted from quizzes, exams, assignments (both listening and written), presentations, recital/concert attendance and extra credit. Course Requirements Textbook: Listen, Seventh Edition by Kerman & Tomlinson Attendance: It is strongly advised that each student attend each and every class. Like the real world, this is a job and attendance and reading/listening to the materials are crucial to a job well done. There are no excused absences. The college catalogue states that a student who has missed class for two calendar weeks will be dropped from the course. In the case of a MWF course, that equals six (6) absences while a TR course would equal four (4) absences. However, for the TTAP program five (5) absences will result in being dropped from the course with the grade of F. Absence on an exam day will result in a zero (0) on the exam and attendance. There are NO makeup exams. Excessive tardiness and/or early departure is unacceptable and the student s grade will suffer. Additionally, lack of attendance at a concert will result in an absence. Attendance will count as five percent (5%) of your final grade. ALL tardies and/or early departures and/or excusing oneself during class and returning will all be counted as an absence. Please use the bathroom and take care of all business prior to class. Cell phones and headphones are not to be used in class. If your professor notices your cellphone being used in class for things other than academic research (i.e., texting, phone calls, etc.), it will be confiscated and returned at the conclusion of the period. All other communicative devices are prohibited. If a student is found to be using such, an absence will be recorded. If a student is dismissed from the TTAP program due to absences and/or other resulting issues, s/he will also be dismissed from the MUSI1306 with a recorded grade of F. A proper attitude is key to learning. If you want to learn, you will learn. If you have a question, raise your hand politely and the professor will call on you. If an issue arises all parties need to remain calm and the issue will be worked out after class has concluded. Arguing with a professor, acting belligerently, or being rude to the professor will result in being dropped from the class with a recorded grade of F. All students utilizing portable technology (computer, portable music device, etc.) will be asked to sit in the front row. Attendance is important for staying on top of the materials presented. No food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

2 Recital/Concert Attendance: Each student will be required to attend two (2) recitals during the course of study. The whole class will attend the concerts together and each will be discussed the class period before and the class period after. These are mandatory and critical to the students understanding and applying the skills learned in Music Appreciation. An absence from any of the prescribed concerts will be treated in the same manner as a class absence. One concert absence equals one class absence. After each recital/concert, each student must write a two-page summary of the event, which may include descriptions, observations, any relation to class discussion, etc. The summaries count for ten percent (10%) of the final grade. These concerts are announced at the beginning of the semester in order to allow the student to clear their schedules. Any issues must be presented in the first week of class. The concerts account for ten percent of the final grade. Concert #1: UNIVERSITY BAND CONCERT Monday, March 2, 7:30 p.m. in TTU School of Music Hemmle Recital Hall Concert #2: TTU Spring Opera: Don Pasquale Thursday, March 26, 7:00 p.m. in TTU Student Union Building Allen Theatre In Class Presentation: Each student will sign up for a specific topic over popular music. The student will come to class and be prepared to discuss with the class his/her findings. The student will tie in elements he/she has been learning throughout the class. The presentation shall be ten minutes in length and account for ten percent (10%) of the final grade. More information will be presented later on the requirements and scope of the presentation. Listening & Writing Assignments: The professor will prescribe at the end of certain classes listening material that will either enhance the lecture of the day or help prepare the student for the lecture the next day. The student will answer questions about the music prescribed and follow a rubric that the professor outlines. These account for ten percent (10%) of the final grade. These assignments will be turned in in two ways: a stapled hard copy at the beginning of the class on the due date and through Turnitin on SPC Blackboard prior to the start of class. All assignments must be stapled if longer than one page. No ed submissions or solely Turnitin will be accepted. If these conditions are not met, a zero (0) will be recorded in the gradebook. Turnitin is used to check for plagiarism and grammatical issues. NO late assignments will be accepted and a grade of zero (0) will be recorded in the gradebook. Listening Quizzes: Developing an understanding of the eras and styles of music presented are crucial to succeeding in this class. I do not expect you to be at the same level as a university music student, but each era of music is distinctual with composers containing certain hallmarks. Upon commencement of an era, listening examples will be posted on Blackboard for the student to listen and analyze in his/her own way. The professor will post some questions and helps for the listener in addition to what is presented in class. At the conclusion of each era, a listening exam will be administered to which the student will listen and respond to the examples presented. This will culminate in a Final Listening Exam as explained in the Examinations portion below. Pop Quizzes: Five (5) unannounced quizzes will be administered throughout the course of study. These will cover readings, lecture notes, and or listening examples. Each one will be worth twenty (20) points and accounts for ten percent of the final grade. Please note that occasionally, an in-class quiz may be administered as an online quiz in Blackboard or may be converted to an in-class listening quiz or a blog post where a student will write a response to a listening example or question as posed by the professor. 3 Examinations: Four (4) examinations will be administered as either in-class exams, take home exams, or SPC Blackboard exams. The exams will be drawn from the book, in-class material, and other forms of media including art, theatre, and listening examples. Each exam will be worth fifty (50) points and the total sum accounts for twenty percent (20%) of the final grade. A Final Exam will be administered during the last week of class. The Final Exam will be worth two hundred (200) points and accounts for twenty percent (20%) of the final grade. A final listening exam will also be administered that will gauge the students recognition and retention of composers, forms, genres, and style characteristics appropriate for each piece selected. The Listening Exam will be worth fifty (50) points and accounts for five percent (5%) of the final grade. Plagiarism and Cheating: Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. If a student has been found to have plagiarized or cheated, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken and the student will be dropped from the course with the grade of F and will be referred to the appropriate disciplinary committees and the TTAP office. An additional tool of Turnitin on SPC Blackboard will be utilized to monitor plagiarism. Extra Credit: 1. A maximum of two (2) films relating to music may be viewed. In addition to viewing the film, the student must submit a list of five (5) truths in the film. These films contain a great deal of inaccuracies, so the student must do some outside research on the composers lives to determine what is true and what is false. A maximum of ten (10) points each may be earned. Movie List: Amadeus (Mozart) / / Immortal Beloved (Beethoven) / / Desire for Love (Chopin) / / Bride of the Wind (Mahler) / / The Music Lovers (Tchaikovsky) / / Copying Beethoven (Beethoven) 2. Two (2) additional concerts/recitals may be attended for an additional twenty five (25) points each. These will be credited as extra credit and added to your points total. Please see the Recital/Concert Attendance Guidelines above. Grading and Assessment: Attendance 2 points each = 50 points (5% of final grade) Concert Reports 50 points each = 100 points (10% of final grade) In Class Presentation 100 points each = 100 points (10% of final grade) Listening Quizzes 20 points each = 100 points (10% of final grade) Listening & Writing Assignments 10 points each = 100 points (10% of final grade) Pop Quizzes 20 points each = 100 points (10% of final grade) Exams 50 points each = 200 points (20% of final grade) Final Listening Exam 50 points = 50 points (5% of final grade) Final Exam 200 points = 200 points (20% of final grade) TOTAL: = 1000 points (100%) Letter grades will be based on a total of 1000 points for a percentage grade in this manner: A % points B % points C % points D % points F 0 % points (applicable for non-participation in any area) An online gradebook will be kept on Blackboard as an additional double-check between the students grade tracker and the professors. Religious Holy Days: In accordance with Texas Education Code Section , South Plains College will allow a student who is absent from class for the observance of a religious holy day to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within seven (7) calendar days after the absence. Students are required to file a written notification of absence with each instructor within the first fifteen (15) days of the semester in which the absence will occur. Forms for this purpose are available in the Dean of Students Office along with instructions and procedures. Religious holy days means a holy day observed by a religion whose place of worship is exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code Section N.B.: The Instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus at any time. Selected composers and compositions will be studied through an interpretation of their historical, functional, and cultural significance. Course Purpose: The purpose of the Creative Arts component in the core curriculum is to provide the student the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the arts through an analysis of creative artifacts and works of the human imagination. This will involve the synthesis and interpretation of artistic expression and enable critical, creative, and innovative communication about works of art. Core Objectives addressed: Critical Thinking: To include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information Communication Skills: To include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral, and visual communication. Teamwork: To include the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal. Social Responsibility: To include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities. Course Requirements: 1. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook. 2. Attend all lectures. 3. Take notes in class. 4. Participate in class discussions. 5. Actively listen to musical examples. 6. Complete outside reading materials and homework. 7. View audiovisual materials on selected topics. 8. Complete the exams on the assigned dates. 9. Attend live performances as assigned by the instructor. Outcomes Inventory: A pre- and post-test may be used to determine the extent of improvement the class has gained during the semester; given at the discretion of the instructor. Course Evaluation: Please see the instructor s Course Information Sheet for specific items used in evaluating student performance. Attendance Policy: Whenever absences become excessive and, in the instructor s opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the student will show competence in the course objectives listed below: 1. Define important musical forms, genres, and compositional techniques. 2. Recognize important musicians, composers, and masterworks of Western Art Music. 3.
