1 Upcoming Programs: June 26 th Debunking: Don t let the screen door hit you on the way out! July 3 rd Joanne Garrison: Author of Burlingame Centennial: Meeting of June 19, 2008 PLEDGE: led by Susan Manheimer who dedicated the pledge to her son who, today, was off to the Marine Corps. THOUGHT OF THE DAY: by John derussy, dressed in black in mourning over President Mark s last week in rank. NEWSCAST: newscaster was M.I.A. SUNSHINE REPORT: Lew Stanton is doing well and should be back to Rotary real soon! VISITING ROTARIANS: Joanne Day introduced visiting Rotarians: Patrick Hall from Pacifica: Attorney Andy Green from Redding: Tourism Scott Williams from Burlingame: Senior Active Jim McGovern from Belmont: Insurance GUESTS OF ROTARIANS: Chris Eckert swore up and down that he knew this guy, as he read his business card Steve Parker with Express Employment Professionals. Greg Lance, teacher from Hillsdale high school, who is involved in the Micro-Lending Project along with the students.
2 PRESIDENT S CLUB: It turns out that the only members that were not members of this elite club were Chris Benson, Carol Bullock, Luther Izmirian, and Chuck Pascal. June 28 th - MYSTERY NIGHT: Our big event is this weekend! Meeting time is 4pm and location is to be determined. Attire is casual/dressy casual. The weather is always unpredictable so please bring a jacket for the evening. Price is $100 per person. Please give payment to Rosemary Azem or send it to the Rotary P.O. Box. Please do this BEFORE the event. If you sign up, you pay. Make checks payable to Rotary Club of San Mateo. Thank you, Lynn Armenio, for all your hard work in putting this together. STEP UP AWARD: Went to Al Norcross for always helping President Mark set up for the meetings. Congratulations Al! President Mark, decided to use the old school days approach of no child left behind and apply it as no Rotarian left behind. Needless to say, they are now members! President Mark took time to thank the many Rotarians that helped him throughout his year. Below is a list of those that were acknowledged: Bill Kenney, Jeff Lowenstein, Larry Ivich, and Sheila Canzian whose terms are up on the Board. Our four freshman Board Members, Jeanne Decker, Chris Lundquist, Lory Lawson, and Bob Campbell. Our outstanding Sergeant at Arms, Yvonne Shiu and Brian Sullivan. Our outgoing officers, Margaret Taylor, John derussey, John Root, and Shawn DeLuna. PAUL HARRIS RECOGNITIONS: Oscar Lopez-Guerra received his second Paul Harris Fellow. Lynn Armenio received her third Paul Harris Fellow. PROGRAM: Brian Sullivan began the program by telling us a little bit about the Micro- Lending Project. Brian spearheaded this project with Rosemary Azem. Great job Oscar and Lynn!
3 Rosemary then introduced our speaker, Julio Villalta, visiting from Honduras along with his wife, Carmen and his son Julio aka Rotarito. Both Julio and Carmen are Rotarians hence the nickname, Rotarito for their son, born to two Rotarians. Along with the loan, they are trained on how to start a business. From their revenues, they are able to pay back the loan and interest. The payment term is anywhere from 4-12 months and they have to meet every 2 weeks with their group, and Rotarians to touch base, give a progress report, share ideas, etc. Eventually the business owners can approach commercial banks for bigger loans with a letter of recommendation from this program. Julio is a business marketing consultant. He has been a Rotarian for 14 years and has been very involved in the Micro-Credit Organization. He explained this brilliant program and its goal to eradicate poverty by providing loans to the poor that would otherwise never have had such an opportunity. Loans are made to those that want to start a business. The business could be coffee growers, a small grocery store, selling mangoes on the street, etc. Brian and Rosemary are working on creating a Micro-Lending bank in partnership with the local high school students. The students will act as micro-bankers and learn the process of identifying potential candidates and where to best place the money. The high school students will also have fundraisers to raise money to finance these loans. They will also make presentations to different organizations to talk about this fantastic new program. Brian and Rosemary, thank you to you and your committee for all the work you are doing on this. What an exciting concept and we look forward to hearing more about it as it progresses. Typically 8 new business owners are grouped together. The loans are between $150 to $300, each, with an interest rate between 2-3%. -Susan M. Lopez-Guerra, Editor - Photos by Chris Eckert
