1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Robyn Thaw (650) September 26, 2011 San Mateo County Health System Health System Offers Back-to-School Tdap Clinics to 7 th 12 th Graders SAN MATEO Little time is left before 7th-grade through 12th grade students who haven t gotten the Tdap booster shot may get turned away from school under a new state law. There are many places in San Mateo County where students can go to get the Tdap vaccine, which protects against whooping cough and other diseases: Medical providers: Contact your medical provider or clinic to make an appointment. Drug stores and pharmacies: Visit to find pharmacies and clinics offering Tdap. San Mateo County clinics: For people who do not have a provider, San Mateo County will offer 5 clinics throughout the County. See the attached schedule for clinic dates and locations. California state law now requires all students entering grades 7-12 to provide proof of Tdap vaccination within 30 days of starting school. Nearly 55,000 students in San Mateo County are affected by the new law, which was prompted by California s recent epidemic of whooping cough, also known as pertussis. Immunity received from childhood vaccines can weaken over time, and it is important for preteens and teens to get vaccinated again to remain protected from whooping cough and several other diseases, said Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer. Many vaccine-preventable diseases spread easily and can lead to missed weeks of school, or very serious consequences, including death. For this reason, I urge parents to take their preteens and teens to a healthcare provider to make sure they are vaccinated.
