Prior to selecting your courses and occurrences, please ensure that you work with both this enrolment guide (EG9) and the latest version of the relevant timetables (T9a or T9c). These documents are available online For the National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing Level 2 and Level 3, while your classes will be timetabled into computer labs where needed, you may find it useful to bring your own laptop. 2 National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing LEVEL 2 NC5214 Method of study Full-time Qualification National Certificate Duration One Semester Start dates February and March - July and August Credits 60 Cost (2014 Fees) FREE Students must complete the following: Customer Service (Level 2) Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean. Applicants will be accepted in order of application. Customer Service and Administration (Level 2) Data Processing (Level 2) Data and Document Processing (Level 2) ABOUT THE PROGRAMME This full-time programme is designed to provide introductory skills in computing, office administration, customer service and written communication. Learners are provided with a range of learning opportunities that will enhance their awareness and knowledge of working in a diverse and modern business environment. Previous knowledge or experience is not required. Graduates can staircase on to other programmes within the Faculty or apply for entry level employment. This programme takes one semester to complete. Attendance at class is required for up to 16 hours per week. Where possible classes will be timetabled over three days. Timetables will be sent on enrolment. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the following entry requirements: Have successfully completed a relevant bridging programme or Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English, i.e. minimum of 10 NCEA English credits at Level 1 or equivalent or Gain a minimum mark of 12.5 out of 20 in the School s programme entry assessment or An overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 with no score below 5.0 or equivalent. 2

3 National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing Level 3 NC0633 Method of study Qualification Duration Start dates Full-time National Certificate One semester February and July Credits 60 Cost (2014 Fees) Students must complete the following: Customer Service (Level 3) Data Processing (Level 3) Customer Service and Administration (Level 3) Data and Document Processing (Level 3) $2800 (approx) about the programme Successful completion of this full-time programme will prepare students for a variety of entry level business administration positions such as receptionist, customer services, word processor operator, data entry clerk, and office assistant. Graduates can staircase to the National Certificate in Business Administration (Level 4). Students are trained within the award winning Business Training Centre which incorporates the Ricoh virtual office concept. This programme takes one semester to complete. Attendance at class is between 18 and 20 hours per week. Timetables will be sent on enrolment. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the following entry requirements: Have computer keyboarding skills and Have successfully completed a relevant bridging programme e.g. MIT Certificate in Office Administration and Computing (Level 2), or equivalent or Have a minimum of 12 NCEA English credits at level 1 or equivalent or Gained a minimum mark of 14 out of 20 in the Department s communication assessment or Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent. Be physically capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme. Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Students are trained in the award-winning Business Training Centre which incorporates the Ricoh virtual office concept. Students are prepared for a variety of roles such as accounts clerk, payroll officer, financial clerk, administrator, sole charge, receptionist, customer services, administrative assistant, word processor, secretary, medical receptionist, medical secretary, ward clerk, clinic clerk, booking clerk, medical word processor and clinical records officer. Graduates can staircase to the Diploma in Business Administration (Level 5). Optional work experience opportunities for full-time students are available to those who meet the specified criteria. This programme takes one semester to complete. Attendance at class is between 18 and 22 hours per week depending on the option chosen. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the following entry requirements: Have the National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing (Level 3) or equivalent or Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English i.e. a minimum of 12 credits at Level 1 or above from the NCEA English subfield or equivalent, or a minimum of 3 credits at Level 2 or above from the NQF writing domain, or a minimum mark of 16 out of 20 in the Department's communication assessment, or evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent and Have word processing and spreadsheet skills (minimum units 111 and 2784 or equivalent skills) Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. 5 Diploma in Business Administration Level 5 MN4444 Method of study Qualification Duration Full-time,Part-time and by distance learning MIT Diploma One year (full-time) Be an approved diploma/degree graduate from New Zealand or overseas or Be transferring from another qualification at Level 5 or above, e.g. NZ Diploma in Business and have made satisfactory academic progress in their studies or Start dates February and July Credits 120 Cost (2014 Fees) one year $5920 (approx) Have relevant administration and/or secretarial work experience and Have word processing and spreadsheet skills (minimum 111 and 2784 or equivalent skills) Students must complete the following: Six core courses Three elective courses Total 60 credits 60 credits 120 credits About the programme This comprehensive, applied diploma provides the knowledge and skills required by administrators to operate effectively in senior administration and office management roles in today s workplaces. It offers the opportunity for those already in the workforce in administration or office support roles to develop their knowledge and skills and have their professional worth recognised by formal qualifications. It also provides a pathway from the Certificate in Business Administration (Level 4) enabling graduates to fast track their career as they gain workplace experience. The programme comprises 120 credits with a minimum of 80 credits required at Level 5 or above. It has a core of administration, management, financial, and information technology courses (60 credits) plus the elective courses totalling 60 credits you choose to tailor the programme towards your individual career goals. Classes have an applied focus and use a variety of teaching methods. A variety of flexible study methods allows you to tailor your study around work and other commitments. If you have completed a relevant level 4 national qualification, you may gain 40 credits (Level 4) towards electives. Successful completion of the diploma may give cross credits towards the Bachelor of Applied Management. and applicants must meet the following entry requirement: Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English i.e. a minimum of 8 credits at level 2 or above from the NCEA English subfield, a minimum of 5 credits at level 3 or above from the NQF writing domain, or a pass in an approved communication paper with a written English component at level 3 or above, or a minimum mark of 80% in the department s communication assessment, or equivalent, or an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.5) or equivalent. Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. 6 You can choose to credit relevant units from National certificates to your electives, with no more than 40 elective credits being at Level 4. Some electives may not be offered every semester. FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATION SPECIALISATION Financial Business Administration Includes Unit Standards 6910, 11815, 11099, 12884, 1279, 27642, and 1294 Topics include working in teams, providing customer service, producing business and financial documents and using spreadsheets to present and display data, within a simulated workplace environment. CV design, interviewing and job seeking skills will also be included. Financial Business Functions Includes Unit Standards 11622, 3491, 11609, 11610, and 335 Topics include manual accounting theory and practical work which includes journals, general ledger, and end of year reports, computerised accounting for accounts receivable and accounts payable using MYOB, and computerised payroll operations. GENERAL ADMINISTRATION SPECIALISATION Client Services Support Includes Unit Standards 6910, 11815, 11101, 11099, 21864, 103, 1279 and 1294 Topics include working in teams, providing customer service, producing business documents, managing travel arrangements and developing communication strategies within a simulated workplace environment. CV design, interviewing and job seeking skills will also be included. Client Administrative Support Includes Unit Standards 113, 109, 27643, Topics include advanced text, word processing and spreadsheet skills to produce business information, requirements of providing management administrative services including business events, travel arrangements, organisation of meetings, overseeing equipment required in an office and time management strategies relevant to the role of the administrative assistant. MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION SPECIALISATION Medical Administration in the Community Includes Unit Standards 21866, 21867, 3491, 6910, 11815, 11101, 1294 Topics include roles in the health sector, requirements for medical administration services including ethical and legal responsibilities, medical terminology, MedTech32 Computerised Patient Management System and report writing. Working in teams and providing customer service within a simulated office environment in a health context. CV design, interviewing and job seeking skills will also be included. 7

8 Hospital Clinical Administration Support Services Includes Unit Standards 21868, 11099, 18180, 12884, 1279 Topics include roles of clinical administrative support personnel, organisational and ethical implications, communication and personal management strategies, communicating in a culturally diverse workplace, cultural sensitivity and safety, clinical records management in a clinical administration support context and production of clinical documents. Communication Includes Unit Standards 3491 and 1279 Topics include report writing, and writing in plain English. Business Training Centre Includes Unit Standards 6910 and Topics include specialised work in the award-winning Ricoh Business Training Centre. Computing Includes Unit Standards 2785 or 2789 Topics include using spreadsheets or desktop publishing. Job Search Includes Unit Standard 1294 Topics include CV design, interviewing, and job seeking skills. Diploma in Business Administration (level 5) PROGRAMME CODE MN4444 LEVEL Accounting and Preparation of Budgets This course covers the following areas in relation to a sole trader operation; recording financial transactions, end of period financial statements, variable and fixed costs and break-even point, preparing budgets using a computerised spreadsheet, variances between results and budgeted figures. LEVEL Preparing And Writing Business Reports The purpose of this course is to enable students to evaluate, analyse and interpret financial and non-financial data for inclusion in a report written in a standard format. Non-financial data includes internal and external factors impacting on the business and relevant to the report Business Planning and Managing Administration Services This course covers contributing to the corporate and administration strategic planning process; providing recommendations for business and administration strategy development; assessing administration services requirements; developing and co-ordinating the provision of administration services; managing administration services and client relationships Organisational Safety and Compliance This course covers organisational compliance with legal obligations and regulatory codes and standards; and developing and designing work standards, procedures and processes that have the capability to implement and maintain a safe and supportive working environment Project Management for Administrators This course covers planning and modifying projects; managing project implementation, and reviewing project effectiveness. 10 STUDYLINK - EFTS IN RELATION TO YOUR STUDENT LOAN As a guideline to be considered as a full time student enrolling for one semester, your EFTS value should be greater than or equal to EFTS For students enrolling in Diploma in Business Administration (Level 5) only: A part time student enrolling in both semesters in one calendar year, your EFTS value should be at least 0.3 EFTS A part time student enrolling for one semester, your EFTS value should be at least 0.25 and less than 0.3 To be considered for a student loan by Studylink (subject to any other Studylink eligibility requirements) a student must be enrolled in at least enough courses to satisfy the part-time eligibility requirements above. Studylink require you to be enrolled in a certain value of EFTS. EFTS stands for Equivalent Full-time Student. It measures the amount of study or workload involved in a course and is used to calculate if you are studying full-time or part-time. Please refer to the T9c timetable to calculate the total number of EFTS you are enrolled in.
