3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

It is the only school in the district with a museum highlighting the historical heroes of its past and its pioneers of the present. It is the smallest high school in Orlando, Florida both in size and enrollment. The added uniqueness about 's size and enrollment is the numerous programs that are offered to the students. is an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering courses based on the IB curriculum for both the Middle Years Program (MYP) and the Diploma Program (DP). The IB programs include academic rigor, comprehensiveness, internationalism, and consistent application with an emphasis on the Learner Profile and IB Design Cycle. also offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement (AP) and Advancement via Individual Determination (A.V.I.D.) courses to meet the needs of our students. These courses are designed to better prepare our students for success in post-secondary education. also houses a Medical Arts Magnet Program where our students receive the foundation needed to become successful as they prepare themselves for their medical career upon graduation. We also work closely with local tech centers where students can begin to master their Page 2

5 craft throughout their high school career leading to potential employment immediately following graduation. The Medical Arts Magnet and tech programs allow our students to learn how to analyze, learn, and reach thoughtful conclusions related to various medical fields and disciplines. A challenge lies in the size and enrollment of. The diversity of the academic programs addressing the multiplicity of student needs present scheduling challenges. With Jones being a Title I school, each teacher must he certified in the content area. Jones High School must have teachers certified and/or in several areas in order to support and meet the students' needs within the community. Another challenge associated with scheduling is finding enough students to meet class prerequisite for the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement class, which leads to another challenge: students passing the Advanced Placement assessments. students must take numerous Advanced Placement classes, as well as the required International Baccalaureate classes which require teachers to be trained in both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. Student mobility rate is also a challenge at Jones High School. If students move to another school, it is difficult to build capacity. The student mobility rate is 52( ), 59( ), 48( ), 45( ) which indicate student mobility has been a major challenge for many years. Another challenge for Jones High School is the number of students that enter the school with below grade level state test scores in reading and math. At the beginning of the school year, 82% of the students enrolled in Algebra I entered below grade level and 72% of incoming 9th grade students were also below grade level in Reading. Page 3

6 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. The 's purpose statement was created to embrace the Mission, Vision, and Goals set forth by Orange County Public Schools. The Mission of Orange County Public Schools is to lead our students to success with the support and involvement of families and the community, along with the Vision, which is to be the top producer of successful students in the nation. To focus the school district's efforts to accomplish the mission and achieve the vision, the board and superintendent set five broad goals, which are: 1. Intense Focus on Student Achievement 2. High-Performing and Dedicated Team 3. Safe Learning and Working Environment 4. Efficient Operations 5. Sustained Community Engagement To further solidify these statements in conjunction with expectations of academic excellence, 's purpose is to foster an educational environment with a global perspective. is an institution that stands as an educational community that bases its standards on the development of its students, a challenging curriculum, and parental and community involvement. Its students are diverse individuals who are going to strive to develop and increase their creative and intellectual beliefs and goals to the highest degree. In doing so, they will be taught to accept responsibility for their learning and their actions. Academic excellence will be provided through a rigorous curriculum that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and challenges our students to extend their learning by making those connections that reflect real world relevancy. These skills will prepare the students to reach their full potential of academic achievement, as well as college and career readiness. Parental and Community Involvement will play an active role in the academic development of the students by being supportive of the teachers and the school goals. In doing so, parents will be asked to express the value and importance of education by monitoring the academic progress of their child. We offer staff development that provides faculty with opportunities that will enhance their professional skills and lead to higher expectations of student performance in their classes. We maintain a comprehensive guidance program that work with the students to build schedules from the curriculum guide so that they are successful in completing their high school tenure. We maintain a safe and orderly environment that is conducive to learning by adhering to the district student code of conduct. We have also established strong business partnerships that have enhanced student learning and we're continuously encouraging parental and community involvement in all aspects of the educational process. embodies its purpose of hoisting students to their greatest potential by hosting the International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Advanced Placement (AP)/College Board, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) curricular. The IB World School is comprised of the Diploma Program (DP) for grades and MYP for grades 9-10 (Middle Years Program). The Advanced Placement (AP)/College Board is designed to prepare students for the rigor that will be encountered with college coursework. 's primary academic programs, as well others, boast curriculum that is rigorous and prepare students for college and other post-secondary programs. In an effort to increase career opportunities through a rigorous curriculum, Jones High has a Medical Magnet, Partnership with Valencia (VCC), and Dual Enrollment Programs at various Orange County Technical Schools. These programs address varied academic and interest needs of students attending. The IB and Medical Magnet students are selected by the district during their eighth grade year while the other academic programs select students based on interest, academic needs, and teacher recommendation. Through these programs, students encounter critical skills found in the field of medicine; creative skills found in the arts; and challenging technical skills found in business and cosmetology. Students take responsibility for their learning by building Page 4

7 academic portfolios in the IB, AP, and AVID programs. These portfolios encompass academic progress and are evaluated on the international and national programs. Parental/Community Involvement are encouraged through the Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA); School Advisory Council (SAC); and (COMPACT), the mentoring program. Collaboratively, these programs support academic instruction and student achievement by playing an active role by following academic progress on a monthly basis. Parent/Community Involvement is solicited on a monthly basis and year round. Teachers and staff are offered various professional development opportunities which encourage high expectations. These professional opportunities address training in the areas of policies and procedures, pedagogy, and intervention and enrichment. Training sessions in policies and procedures include Professional Teaching Code of Ethics, Marzano Instructional Framework, ADDitions Volunteer Training, Student Code of Conduct/School Wide Behavioral Plan, and Teacher Mentoring. Professional learning includes, but not limited to, enhancement in literacy skills across content areas, Marzano's Strategies, Deconstructing Standards/Lesson Panning, Data Analysis/Formative Assessment, Differentiated Instruction, Collaborative Structures, Classroom Management, Integrating Technology in the Classroom, and Professional Learning Communities. Intervention and enrichment training opportunities include teachers collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to enhance student achievement. These sessions include, but are not limited to, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) best practices.the comprehensive Guidance Program at consists of the county's student support program, Student Assistance Family Empowerment (SAFE), mayoral program, Parramore Kids Zone (PKZ), Valencia Community College Scholars Program (VCC); and 100 Black Men four-year mentoring and scholarship program. Sitting principal, Valeria Maxwell, implemented an "Eyes on the Tiger" program to closely monitor the comprehensive guidance program and community support organizations in an effort to efficiently and effectively identify the academic and social needs of students so they can exit high school prepared for post-secondary education and career opportunities. During , 99 students received Industry Certification, which is the first in the school's history. Another notable achievement is graduation rate progression from 77% in 2009 to 93% in Since , has received the coveted Five Star School Award. It is an award from the Florida Department of Education created by the Commissioner's Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. The areas of improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years are increasing student enrollment and size through the IB/MYP program and the Medical Arts Program. We would like the program to increase by 5% per year. would also like to increase the number of teachers with dual certification and required professional development like IB/MYP and/or Advanced Placement which lead to improvement. The more trained and certified teachers, the more flexibility for the master schedule as well as better scheduling for the students. Another area of improvement is the number of students to receive IB diplomas. Within the next 3 years, would like to increase the diploma by 5% each year. Jones would also like to continue to improve state standardized assessments for all students. A 5% increase each year in the College Readiness assessments, State Standardized assessments, end-of-course assessments, Industry Certification assessments, Advanced Placement assessments, and IB assessments is the goal. The school grade is currently a "C" and the school would like to increase its letter grade each year and to be able to maintain an "A", once it is achieved. Page 6

The first week of school is dedicated to character education, tolerance, behavioral expectations, academic expectations, and relationship building. A unified focus calendar is used school-wide to address a specific lesson progression for character education and relationship building. In August 2014, implemented Unity Attire for all students with the belief that this effort would positively impact student behavior. This initiative has been well-received, and about 90% of the student body has embraced this opportunity to develop a stronger team mentality. offers After-School & Saturday Tutoring Programs developed for students experiencing difficulty in core content areas. Parents are notified of mandatory tutoring requests and play an integral role in ensuring student attendance and participation. During tutoring sessions, the covered content include standards that have not been mastered. This is determined through common assessments. Students are assessed during tutoring sessions and remain in the program until mastery occurs or the desire to be further challenged exists. During the school year, the program was well-attended by students and was critical in helping to impact successful student performance on state and district assessments. To support the school's goal of effective technology integration to assist in data analysis, delivery of instruction, and student engagement during the learning process, 476 computers have been purchased since January Also, since this time, 333 computers have been repurposed to classrooms, 5 computer labs added with 3 additional labs repaired to full capacity, and 37 classrooms have been out-fitted with 4 or more computers.
