The Australian Power Institute (API) recognises Curtin as a School of Excellence in Electrical Power. The Electrical Power course at Curtin receives financial support and scholarships for students from the API, APA, Western Power, SKM, and many other Western Australian industries. Electricity is a key energy source in the development and progress of contemporary society. Since fossil fuels are a finite resource the development of alternative sources of electrical energy such as solar and wind is vital. As well as meeting the demands of an energy hungry world, these new sources of electricity must be non-polluting, environmentally friendly and safe for future generations. Australia is a leader in alternative energy research due to its extensive sources of renewable energy, particularly sun and wind. Curtin s Electrical Power course is well regarded by industry and students interested in a career in renewable energy will find the degree rewarding and challenging. A new area of interest covered in the degree is Power Electronics. This is the study of the control of electrical currents via a computer. Good Reasons to Study Electrical Power Wide Variety of Career Options Our increasing dependence on electricity means employment opportunities in the area of power generation, transmission and distribution are strong both locally and overseas. Electrical power engineers are able to work in almost any industry that uses electrical power such as mining, the marine industry, transport or alternative energy. Improve Quality of Life The generation and supply of electrical power is vital for the infrastructure of communities. Graduates in electrical power engineering are in a unique position to contribute to the design, implementation, and ongoing development of the power industry, having a positive influence on the quality of people s lives. Help the Environment Modern societies are energy dependent and the decreasing supply of non-renewable energy sources has resulted in a growing interest and support for alternative sources of energy. Electrical power engineers involved in alternative energy are making an impact in preserving our environment through advancements in such areas as solar and wind power. Industry Recognition The Electrical Power course at Curtin is one of the strongest in Australia and is valued by the industry. The Australian Power Institute (API) and the Australian Power Academy (APA) have strongly endorsed the power engineering course at Curtin. High Quality Course Curtin offers a fully accredited course that is relevant to industry and that encompasses theoretical, computer simulated and practical components. Industry Scholarships There are a variety of industry sponsored scholarships and prizes for high achieving students. With the rapid progress of information technology, the role of communications is becoming even more crucial for increasing industry efficiency and competition. Computing and communications have become strongly linked as older technologies have given way to a network of desktop workstations, personal computers, printers, file servers and other additional equipment. Everyday we use and interact with electronic communication technologies such as , electronic bank transactions, product and ticket purchases over the internet, and intelligent home appliances such as computer-driven fridges, washing machines and air conditioners. In modern factories, computer-driven robots complete the manufacturing process. These robots have sufficient inbuilt intelligence to deal with quality control, maintenance and process control. Communication networks link the design office and factory floor, simplifying the manufacturing process. There is an ever increasing demand for professional engineering expertise in the area of electronics and communications resulting in most of our graduates gaining employment almost immediately on completion of their degree. Good Reasons to Study Electronic and Communication High Quality Course Curtin prepares students for the work place through theoretical studies and practical experience. You will have access to the latest in technology and facilities including laboratories and computer simulations. Diverse Career Options Electronic and communication engineers work in a wide variety of roles, including research and development, production, management, and technical support, in public and private sectors. Job opportunities for these engineers exist in all parts of the world. Help Shape the Future The products of electronic and communication engineering, such as mobile phones, computers and various entertainment electronics, shape modern lifestyles. The rapid advancements in the electronic and communication engineering fields continue to influence developments in human activities, including recreational, industrial, commercial, scientific and medical fields. Make a Difference The ability to communicate with one another, whether simply to stay in touch or to contact emergency services is an important part of everyday life. Electronic and communication engineers play a vital role the development and supply of communication equipment and services. As our lives continue to rely on computer technology, the need for computer system engineers will grow. Offices, factories and homes use computers for a wide range of tasks and require development and support from specialist engineers. Studying computer systems engineering at Curtin, you will explore the areas of artificial intelligence, robotics, machine vision, computeraided design and manufacture, automation and process control. You will also study the fields of office and factory automation, machine learning, automatic control, information appliances, intelligent embedded and distributed systems, real time processing, computer architecture, hardware software co-design, computer communications and the design and management of computer systems. Future career prospects for professional computer system engineers include both established and new areas of demand. Automobiles, health care, agriculture and water monitoring will continue to develop and incorporate more computer technology. At the same time, the increasing need for energy efficiency and minimising greenhouse gas emission will require the sophisticated monitoring and control that only embedded computer systems can offer. As a result, the demand for computer systems engineers will remain high across the international market. Good Reasons to Study Computer Systems Change and Innovation Computer systems engineering can be challenging and exciting career path due to industry advancements and a rapidly expanding range of applications. Wide Range of Careers Computer engineering is one of the fastest growing and largest areas of engineering with an estimated one million practitioners across the globe. Work can be found in areas such as resource, health, automotive and retail industries. Computer system engineers can work for large corporations where designs will be produced in the millions, or for smaller organisations providing specialised services to particular industries. High Quality Course Curtin s Computer Systems program is highly regarded by industry. The course has been offered for more than two decades and was the first of its kind in Western Australia. Help Make a Difference Computer systems engineering researchers at Curtin are involved in development of technology to assist people with physical disabilities. A current project is to develop a new and compact talking book system to be used by the visually impaired. Other projects include the development of low cost Braille readers and printers to assist the visually impaired in the classroom.
