2 President s Message Welcome to There is so much to look forward to as we get a fresh start on a brand new year. This is usually the me of year we resolve to change or improve some part of our lives. Whether you call it a resolu on, an objec ve or a commitment I hope you consider growing as a leader one of those goals. LMLA provides the opportunity to improve as a leader in a safe environment but there are two key ingredients and that is your commitment and your me. Improving yourself is a great goal and we should all find a way to improve some aspect of our lives. The ques on is will you? Some mes you must stretch yourself and take chances in order to grow. Growth is not easy. You have to go beyond yourself. The only other op on is to con nue what you are doing with no opportunity for advancement or personal growth. The ques on is will you take that next step? Will you assert yourself this year and commit to growing as a leader? Are you willing to put the me and energy into personal growth? Nobody can make that decision except you. Successful people aren t successful because they wait on something to fall into their laps. They pursue success knowing that some mes you must fail to succeed. So don t be afraid of failure. Embrace it, learn from it, make the right changes (lay aside your pride) and drive toward success. Every successful leader has a story to tell on how they arrived where they are. It wasn t because it was given to them. They each worked for it. Many had to overcome difficult circumstances but instead of wallowing in their circumstances each successful leader overcame it. What will your goal be for the year 2015? Let me urge you to make the most of your LMLA membership. If we are not offering something that fits what you want then bring it to our a en on. There may be others who have that same need. Our Founda ons of Management courses are star ng at the end of January. Will your name be on the roster? Toastmasters has been re energized, will your name be on the list of members? LMLA elec ons are about to open up. Will you be willing to step up and commit your me and talents? Remember, the key ingredient to your success is you. Donnie Carnes LMLA President 2

6 Veterans Night By Donnie Carnes. President and Luis Ulloa, Vice President Programs On November 4, 2014, over 300 people joined Lockheed Mar n Leadership Associa on (LMLA) as Veterans Night was hosted at the Renaissnace Waverly Hotel. LM Aero employees in Marie a, along with employees in Clarksburg and Meridian par cipa ng via VTC, honored our servicemen and women at this year s Veterans Night Dinner. LMLA honored 138 Lockheed Mar n veterans. Lockheed Mar n Ac vi es included the veterans roll call at the three sites, a musical salute to the services, a missing man ceremony, and a flag folding ceremony, and the guest speaker. Each year LMLA honors one of the senior members who served in the military. This year s honoree was Al Rowe. Al Rowe served with the Army Air corps in the Pacific theater during World War II. Lockheed s Color Guard conducted a flag folding ceremony, which was presented to Al as a token of apprecia on for his heroic service. Al is one of the remaining WWII veterans in our community, so it was truly an honor to have him as a guest. The evening s keynote speaker was Jeff Struecker Army Ranger. Jeff was directly involved in the search, rescue and recovery effort when a Black Hawk helicopter went down in Mogadishu, Somolia. That experience lead to his book The Road to Unafraid. Jeff began the night with a video showing him and another soldier returning to Mogadishu and recalling the moments of that tragic event. Jeff s speech was moving and mo va ng for many. 8 Fall Book of the Quarter Recap By Ted Miller, Professional Development Course Manager The Fall Book of the Quarter (BoQ) group met three mes this summer. LMLA members recently spent several lunch hours with Diane Stefani, Director of Human Resources, discussing the book The Alliance Managing talent in the Networked Age by Reid Hoffman. This is part of the ongoing Book of the Quarter (BoQ) series which partners senior management with par cipa ng employees. There were four sessions, during which Diane presented her views on why this book contributes important ideas regarding our current corporate circumstance. She also led open and frank discussions about life here at Lockheed Mar n which was of great interest to club par cipants. The main points of the book were that things have changed and for the company to be an agile employer, we have to adapt and change to fit the current wave of employees who are coming into our ranks. Workers are quicker to change jobs laterally, transfer to other plants and to leave the company than ever before. The Alliance proposes to use tours of duty and network intelligence programs to improve the environment to one where people have more job sa sfac on, which leads to enhanced produc vity.
